Had to paus the video to comment because I resonated so much about young people complaining about Singapore. I was one of them before I started travelling. I complained about how boring SG is, how strict, how expensive, how we had to pay CPF etc. After I started travelling, though I haven't lived anywhere else, I could see how Singapore was a much better country to live in than any of the other places I visited. I mean, sure, they were lovely to visit as a tourist but I couldn't imagine myself living there long-term. There are so many little things that we took for granted which I learned to appreciate after I travel. For example, we are building MRT around my estate and I appreciate how they design their construction works to ensure that people still have a proper sidewalk with clear instructions to get to their destinations. I have many times walked to a dead end in other countries where the sidewalk disappears for no apparent reason and you just have to walk on the grass or on the road.

This is so true! i have been talking to many younger chaps that criticized Singapore and they are so pampered. They want freedom of speech and freedom of action with regardless of safety and security, i was born in the 70s and i think i have seen the changes in Singapore, and i am fortunate enough to see the transformation between SG and the rest of the countries. Sure, Singapore is not perfect, but I appreciate what the government is doing and how the country has been transformed

As a Singaporean who grew up middle class , studied in a local school in sg , stayed in HDBs my whole life , , currently living in Australia (for my education) and have lived in india and canada before , people don’t understand how privileged we are to be in Singapore . Once you travel outside of sg and actually live in another country (not as a tourist but as a resident ) , you’ll realise how easy and sorted it is for us in sg . The transportation system and healthcare system we have is probably the best I’ve ever seen , the prices of food at cafes / normal food stores and hawker centre ( considering that sg is a first world country) is remarkably cheap. People complaining about how chicken rice now cost $7 bucks (its fair to be frustrated with that considering how it used to cost $2.50 back then ) but bro .. go out to other first world countries and see how a decent meal at a place that’s considered ‘cheap ‘ can cost $20 🥲

Let me add , yes I was a frustrated teenager here in sg . I felt trapped and I needed the exposure of being in a different country. After living in 4 different countries, I’m alittle more grateful about my country. Yes there are downsides to being in sg , the rules are hella strict and quite often , life becomes dry and boring (mainly because there’s no scope for the arts in this country) but I’ve no doubts on how amazing the country is when is comes to making sure that their people have access to safety , good and affordable healthcare, good education ( yes I agree it’s stressful, I failed my O level exams BUT I still believe that our system does the job of educating the kids well) , god bless the EASILY accessible public transportation and how amazingly easy it is to figure the transportation system out if you’re new to the country as it’s a walkable city. You really don’t need a car.

I worked in Singapore, and I would say the same. The younger generation of Singapore is too lucky, I'm not really sure why they are still complaining about life in Singapore. Everything is at hands if they wanted, short travel distances (mind you, 50 minutes travel is considered normal in Malaysia), public transport everywhere immediately. And a fully functional library, and government funds help in education and living supports. I would hope Malaysia. could do the same too.

The accommodations are easy, shop under walking's distance, and getting access to knowledge is a breeze. I must say, the government's support for learning and career changes is quite impressive. On a lighter note, there's this amusing perception in Singapore that things in Malaysia are still cheap. Well, they might be when you're converting currencies, but in terms of salary to product ratios, Singapore is actually more budget-friendly - except maybe when it comes to buying a house. Rent in the city areas of Malaysia is pretty much on par. Just thought it's worth updating your knowledge about the current situation in Malaysia. Cheers!

I've always imagined living in Singapore to be like dividing a cake you buy from the bakery. The global and local elite, by virtue of their wealth, intelligence and network, get the biggest slices, while the average Singaporean gets the crumbs. But the government tries to make you feel better by giving you some sprinkles and chocolate sauce to go with your crumbs, to make it more palatable. I guess unequal and inequitable distribution of wealth, opportunity and resources happens in every society, but in Singapore, the sugar coating is more obvious to keep the masses happy.

thanks for this interview. For sure it seems too positive, but I guess John is a success story himself, so it's no surprise. I like the part where he said the older you wait to get started on learning new tech, the better is the tech LOL. Very insightful perspective. Pretty sure every one complains when they are struggling to find a footing, and then when they do land, they may then start appreciating what's around them. It's a fine balance and it should be and it should evolve as maturity and life experiences are gained. No doubt about it, Singapore has done very well for its residents.

I lived in the Philippines and in Singapore but never been in Dubai. But it's so true that Singapore is really safe and clean. I would definitely choose Singapore to live long term rather than in the Philippines where traffic is horrible, no high-speed modern train from and to the airport, filthy airports are bug infested (far from Changi lol), airport security are swallowing money from foreign passengers, people getting killed by muggers almost every day (so not safe walking alone at night), famous rivers are filled with sacks of garbage despite the cleaning projects of the local govt, stray bullets are a norm during new years eve celebrations, obsessed with using firecrackers before, during, & after fiestas, same with new years celebration, all that pollution. It's 2024 and the Philippines is still so far from where Singapore is right now. This is why I'm not surprised that Philippine passport-holders are still required to have a visa to visit the US, Japan, & Australia (their so-called allies) 😂😂😂

For the youngsters just like myself (I'm 28) - I've been all around the West (Australia, USA, UK) to meet and hang with my friends and family - Sure, they're cooler countries for young people with lots more to do, but there is LITERALLY no difference in every day life. You pretty much do the same shit in Singapore that you'd do in NYC except it's cheaper to buy a car. Have fun being in a failed city lol. As long as you can find open-minded people like yourself in SG, you're good. Really good chat. Though, I can hear Singaporeans I know say “of course rich Ang mohs say this about SG”. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Singapore, but I’ve learned to tempter my glowing references as I know it does have quite a few issues yet to resolve particularly for those less well off. Look at the hunched over Aunty struggling to work in KFC, or the old uncle cleaning the food court. No doubt it has so much of an advantage over others though. He’s so right about Australia. It’s virtually impossible to simply get a start with a home. SG’s HDB is great provided people get married - though that hasn’t kept the birth rate up either. SG is ahead, but it’s still a work in progress. Majulah Singapura!

@@kamariahabdrahim6963 Put the onus on the individual? That’s not very Confucian. This is one area where Australia is streets ahead of most countries. With the cost of living and people living longer, it’s not right to squeeze people by having to struggle with working while both raising a family and being solely responsible for their parents. Is it any wonder birth rates are so low? In Australia, in addition to normal aged care homes, many higher quality options exist where people fund it through selling their home - specialist seniors housing is in high demand. There was also a suggestion from Paul Keating (PM who introduced Superannuation) to add a golden years tax that all would pay to fund specialist aged care for those who need it over 80. People who say it’s a cultural thing in Asia, well it was too in Australia once but it need not be. I think this is an issue SG sweeps under the carpet so as to not lose face - both the country and the families themselves. A reasonable retirement with professional care if needed is an important indicator of a fair and successful society. My point is that Singapore is a work in progress, with success and great policy in many areas, and hopefully will get this right soon too.

When one live a life where it's technically planned out from baby till adulthood, and haven't experienced any major life challenges or experienced what it's live to actually live and work elsewhere other than Singapore, they will not be able to understand or appreciate what we have in Singapore. . Kids here are guaranteed to go to school, we don't hear dropouts very often. Majority of the kids go to tertiary education. And young able bodied adults could get jobs, any jobs easily as well as any decent paying jobs based on their qualifications that could afford them a home and decent living. And the cycle starts again with their kids. . And since they have never felt a sharp contrast of how bad life can be, they will always ask for more, more things that will satisfy their feelings to make them feel good.

bro i would definitely dubai because more landed property and more money and more business and more malls and a lot more. rent is less to pay. not that expensive. Singapore is just too small and you cant put anything on rent because i am foreigner. i got pr but ever since lee hsien loong changed the immigration laws of landed property and we couldnt put it on rent anymore.The house was well paying. So I am sorry but singapore is not a good option.
