His outlook to reading actually made me think and appreciate how important writing is. That single sentance of 'It's amazing what we have written down', kind of inspires me to write down some of my thoughts and publish it, no matter how unrefined I think my writing is. As humans, we do not have the special capability some animals have of inheriting memories from ancestors. Instead we developed writing and reading, by which we transfer information both current and future generations. It is through writing and reading that we aquired such such deep and wide collective intelligence and became this advanced as a species. A lot of us isn't really consciously aware that knowledge, technologies, arts, culture and craftsmanship; all of them can actually be lost from societies, writing and reading is the only way we have to prevent that.

Shame is a rather shallow reading of Indian soceity. Its far too simplistic. Karma and moksha would be the more philosphical & deeper rooted aspects that guide Indian society at large.

An average Indian person in day to day life would hardly think about karma and moksha. Jeff is correct. Indian society runs on shame ...what will people say... ... what will my parents think, or feel... etc

One thing I know that western society is about laws but Indian culture is about duty(dharma). So western sees us as chaotic and lawless society. But we need less laws because we are duty bound society. When someone doesn't perform his duty he looked down by society.
