What you guys described as resilience despite of overwhelming poverty, some Filipinos would claim as apathy due to a feeling of helplessness. It is a continuing battle and hopefully we can find leaders who will lead us out of this rut. Our journey continues….

People are people, and most people are cool. Its governments that suck. All of them. I've ran across this not only in Manila but also In Colombo, Sri Lanka when they had just recently gone through a civil war. It can be pretty intimidating as a westerner to see militarized police carry around AK-47s, but I never had a problem with them, and they were generally pretty cool and friendly.

It’s a common practice in our culture to invite others to eat when they arrive and find us already having a meal. The phrase "Kain tayo" or "Halika, kain tayo," meaning "Let's eat" or "Come join us," has become a customary expression among Filipinos.

The people earn in pesos, they also spend in pesos. 450 pesos per day is similar to 15$ per hr in abroad. Like in Vancouver, the rent for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house is $4,285$ in average. There are places in the Philippines that rents out a house that is 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom at 5,000 pesos or 125$ (economy ). So if you do the math, at the end of the month there is still some money left for something else. But the 15$ an hour may sound bigger than 450 pesos a day but it will not even be halfway of the rent if you include the tax. The denomination is different . They earn in pesos, the spend in pesos. In abroad they earn in $, they also spend in $. It's the buying power & location that counts to make it work...

Just don't pay attention to those people saying go back to your country when you said something they didn't like. Just take note only those good comments that can help you as a foreigner in one country. They never been out of the country and very immature to say such comments. We Filipinos are truly very loving and caring to our partner and that's why we tend to be very jealous especially when you talk or look or glance at other women around 🤭. But just give assurance to your girl so she won't be over jealous 😉. Well, enjoy your stay in the Philippines. I would say foreigners are very welcome and safe in the Philippines.

On long sleeves and jeans question, I have answer because its same throughout Asia from middle east to Japan. In almost all these countries, agriculture was predominant occupation so you are working whole day in sun. Your skin get darker due to increased melanin production and body adapt to local conditions and next gen is more browner. So if you are light skinned , then you and your ancestors are/were not working on fields doing back breaking work . Then mostly you are rich who can afford servants for work for you. So light skin became desirable trait.

Really funny how a lot of foreigners think the whole attitude of Filipinos change just because they're foreign, especially with the price of products, they always assume its foreigner's price like that one stupid vlogger who taught that a bucket hat was just P20 if he was Filipino, it was P150 for foreigners/Filipinos.

But in the office, most employees do not even maximize its use. We do not abuse it. And also, the basic salary may be low, but other companies are kind enough to compensate by offering good non-monetary benefits, which is great.

Haven't finished watching yet. But regarding crime here, i think the reason why Filipinos react right away when vloggers talk about safety here is because in reality, most of the countries these foreigners are from like the US, UK, Australia and even NZ actually have higher crime rate compared to the Philippines. That's a fact. 2023 Crime Index Rate Ranking: 1 Malaysia 52.9 2 Cambodia 52.9 3 Myanmar 48.2 4 Indonesia 45.9 5 Vietnam 44.5 6 Philippines 42.7 7 Thailand 38.7 8 Brunei 29.0 9 Singapore 29.2 United States 49 United Kingdom 46.9 New Zealand 45.8 Australia 45.5 (Source: numbeo site)

Take care with trusting figures such as these. There’s a reason many countries with the lowest crime rates in this table are from Asia and the Middle East. @@kismetau Well those are your feelings. Doesn't mean everyone feels the same. However, I do agree that there are places, particularly in Metro Manila, where it's not so safe. But most big cities in most countries have these areas too. Also, crime here is actually most concentrated in Metro Manila. So if you compare crime rate by cities, Manila is actually among the highest (in Southeast Asia). But as you travel outside Metro Manila, crime rate goes down considerably. But I need to add too that Metro Manila is a huge area comprising 16 cities. And there are cities that are safer than others, particularly the richer cities. For example, Makati City is actually among the top 10 safest cities in Southeast Asia, even outranking Bangkok, Jakarta, KL, etc. So that "riskiest cities for tourists" ranking by Forbes is unfair because it did not clarify which city exactly in Metro Manila is risky.

I hope you will notice this mate. Cheers! If I may add, the Philippines has gotten better than what it used to a couple of decades ago. As for the minimum wage, the cost of living is way too low in the country when compared to US and Australia. In the US for example, their minimum wage earners are barely scraping by to pay bills and rent and even food, and that is a hard truth in the US. Finally, the Philippines has drastically declined it poverty rate. It was at 48% in the 80s to 38% in the 90s then decreased to 28% in 2000s and about 22% in 2010s. Currently, poverty incidence sits between 16 and 18% of our Total population. And, there is an ever-growing upper middle class and wealthy Filipinos these days than used it used to a decade or two ago; not to mention the super-rich have also increased. Nevertheless, some are still in Poverty line and in lower middle class bracket. I can somehow surmise that your common interaction are usually with Filipino folks who are coming from lower middle class and poverty line, and there is nothing wrong with such. I hope you can also have genuine interactions with largest class amongst Filipinos - the Middle class and upper middle class, next would be the wealthy and the rich or super-rich, so you can have a Balanced perspective about the Philippines, and Filipinos as a whole.
@sunergi

these new Middle class Filipinos are those students starting from the Millenials who are now in their Prime age and already employed. Long gone is the old agricultural way of life in the province, the current generation is either working in the cities or abroad. When people have work, the money gets to work the economy as well. Something that's left for the country to grow more is slowly getting attention like Oil and Gas resources, Infrastructure, housing, and revitalization of the agriculture and foreign direct investments. Filipinos see themselves more Western than Asian, because that is where they got it from Spain and USA. As more and more young Filipinos explore business, more and more of them gets to voice more rights and stability in the government.

I actually didn't want to comment on the topic here, but I just can't listen to so much BS, so I have to say something about it here. I've seen this Josh a lot in TT, because he sometimes appears on my Foryou page. As I'm always looking for business partners, I did a little research on him. Well, what can I say, his wedding photography business was a flop. Then he went to PH and realized, wow, the women like him here. But he mustn't forget one thing, he's just different because he comes from abroad. The Pinay all like foreigners (99%). Apparently he once had a Pinay there, but it looks like he prefers the FCK boy life. Josh, you're over 50 years old, you should slow down a bit before you die lonely and alone. Let's take a closer look at the business. He says he earns several thousand dollars through his online business. He says he has already hired several Pinoys, even up to 20. But a lot of things don't add up. How can he hire Pinoys when he can't/isn't allowed to have a company in the Philippines? Even if he has a company in Australia, he still couldn't hire the Pinoys. This all smells like an illegal scam and maybe the BIR should be made aware of this video. They will deal with tax evasion, illegal work and other illegal activities. His visa will also be cancelled afterwards and that will be the end of his time in the Philippines. There is a reason why he doesn't show off his company (if he had one) anywhere. No company address, no company name, absolutely nothing. So all of his statements are just absolute BS. He also says that his son will be a millionaire in the next 5-10 years thanks to his coaching. OH man, I hope most people here don't fall for this kind of BS. If it were that easy, why isn't Josh a millionaire. Why does he still have to work all the time? I have lived in Dubai and PH for 8 years, I know all the rules and laws regarding work and business. But such incompetent broke guys are simply a no-go. Anyone who watches his videos will see that he is an eloquent 50+ year old guy with a maximum of 3 t-shirts. He doesn't live on a tight budget because he wants to. He lives on a tight budget because he is broke and has no other choice. Sure, it's nice to work remotely. If it works, sure, why not. Good for him. But then he should please stay down to earth and not talk rubbish here just to get followers. Yeah, but unfortunately that's how it works these days, a lot of stupid people believe a lot of what is said on the internet. Conclusion: He was unsuccessful in business and in love/marriage in his country. He hasn't achieved anything in PH so far either, otherwise he would have at least mentioned his non-existent company. So you shouldn't believe his words and instead concentrate on other people. Example, another influencer. They are even friends. Jason Roberts. He has an Airbnb business. That sounds much more profitable and also seems to be running much better. Plus, everything is registered and so he also pays his taxes. You should interview people like that, then you would also have more success with your business.

And rich people in the Philippines mostly dont have lighter skin. Maybe are of chinese descent. But not all of chinese descent are wealthy and lighter. @@migovasquez0303 In Filipino society, people do perceive those with lighter skin to have more money. Obviously, this isn't really true but this is the perception people have because of colorism. And yeah, this is an Asia thing. It's also part of why some East Asians look down on Southeast Asians. In history, the Filipinos who were more related to the Spanish (thus having lighter skin) get more benefits than those who aren't. This doesn't mean they still didn't get discriminated against, of course. Brown skin was just seen as ugly & dirty and so they tried to basically breed it out of our ancestors.

A lot of Filipinos desire to have lighter skin due to historical influences from the Spanish occupation in the Philippines. The Spaniards established a clear distinction between white and brown skin, creating a hierarchy that associated beauty and wealth with lighter skin. This mindset still persists today, contributing to the ongoing dilemma surrounding skin color in the country. The trauma and insecurity related to skin color was inherited from the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines.

That actually what makes the country's cost of leaving lower compared with other developed countries, the low pay per day. Increasing the pay to Western standards will drastically increase the price of goods and services. So people with money enjoy the country more.

Actually a lot of us filipinos want to go out of our box... but we are hindered by the bureaucracy of our government corrupt institution... like for example filing a bussines permit or paying bussiness income tax is a long hard process, you have to give bribes or bring Harry Roque with you to get it done.. 😤 going back and forth from island A, B and C across heavy traffic takes too much time and money... Not to mention how expensive our electricity is...😧

Blame the Spaniards for the beginning of the whitewashing of Filipinos. Filipinos who were more related to the Spanish were treated better in society back then. And sadly, this mentality still permeates today. I wish for all skin whitening products to be banned everywhere. These companies should focus more on skin care, not skin whitening.
