When Elizabeth lost her job, this family of five felt the crunch. But Elizabeth didn’t stop spending, so Wojtek began juggling their growing debt between 16 credit cards with low introductory rates. Now, the cards are about to jump to full interest and these two are preparing for the worst.

Credit is cheap and thats where they make money. They see you have rotating debt they want in because you're paying a ton in interest rates.
@shadowspire
@shadowspire 5 жыл бұрын
@Carol Howard that's what I said. If you have rotating credit on your cards, you're paying 15-29% interest on the overall amount. Also having a credit card isn't bad, you just have to remember that if you cant buy it in cash, you cant afford it and should not put it on a card. Me personally I buy stuff with credit cards but have already put aside the money pay it off at the end of the bill cycle. No interest paid plus my score goes up and get lower rates should I need them for anything just as a little safety net

Ive always been poor and really struggled both with the economic downfall in 00/01 and during my divorce in 08. I was making 42k a year, stuck with house, paying 1300/mth in daycare and 30k in legal over 2yrs. My ex was ordered a paltry 500/mth in childsupport but refused to pay it. I decided then i didnt want to be in this position of being incredibly broke with 2 small kids. I started saving 50/mth and transferring over balance when i got paid. Upping my savings and cutting expenses to bone and when daycare costs went down and my income went up i kept saving. Ive allowed a little lifestyle creep 14yrs later, but when i was laid off due to covid i was still saving 1k a month on unemployment and had about 8yrs of living expenses saved (without changing spending) which is an incredibly peaceful feeling. Upping my savings and pinching pennies really does become addicting. Esp when you have a big goal

@@wijcik Paying off high interest debts is a good way to go. There has been times Gail has made people pay off stuff less than a thousand right away. For the most part though, High interest first is the way to do it. Say you have an interest rate on a line of credit, about 5% with a total of 2000 in debt. You have a credit card with an interest of 27% and a total of 7000 in debt. Gee, wonder what one someone should do first!!!??!?!! you'll end up paying way more for the credit card if you leave it last compared to the line of credit. So nothing to cringe about really.

I am from Germany and cash is "KING" and the use of credit cards is frowned on. When I moved here for work I noticed people who made the same or even less than me had a lot of stuff. Big houses, multiple cars, boats, jet ski, home renovations the list goes on and on. When my coworker asked for a ride to work I saw that he had put a large plastic tarp on his roof because he didn't have the money to repair it Another coworker had bald tires on her Audi Q7 because between her and her husband they couldn't come up with enough money for replacement tires. She also had to take out a hardship withdrawal from her 401k to forestall her home being foreclosed on. Ridiculous!

tia fae I think the difference with America specifically is that you don’t have good credit unless you take on debt, the only way to build your credit is through either credit cards or debt installment payments that are reported to the credit bureaus. And yes, not all debt is bad and credit cards aren’t inherently bad if you’re using them correctly to build your credit, but the majority of people get trapped by using them and accumulating more than they can afford to repay without extremely high interest over a long period of repayment period. The average American has $30,000 in credit card debt, that’s an insane amount that means most people do not use them responsibly.

When you do this, you reduce spending on kids. Kids get X a month, but that has to cover their wants (extra clothes, toys etc). It’s either a wash or you save money because kids know they can’t just keep asking for more

I only have one credit card and I rarely use it at the mall or Walmart. I always make sure I have enough money in the bank to pay the full bill ASAP. I have an app on my phone that allows me to pay off my credit card bill immediately. I usually only use credit cards on amusement park trips and concerts because I am a total roller coaster freak and I love Luke Bryan and many more singers.also I use it for online purchases. It takes about two days for the bill to get applied to your account and always save money to pay for that. So when I use my credit card I scan a check via the credit card app on my phone with my phone camera whenever the bill gets applied to my credit card account. It’s pretty simple

Chrysi Chrysi I don’t think credit cards are that bad for people who r good with money. I pay with credit cards to get points to use for plane tickets, hotels etc... that’s make it easier to do some stuff when we r paying some of it with points. But, ya it’s not for everyone. I personally see everything in the dollars I’m paying not what I pay with real money. So if something is $4.99 I see that as $5 plus tax out of my pocket thought it’s technically from my card. That’s how I keep myself accountable to the money I spend with cards.

@@sarasarah3404 Way too much money for a 10 year old. That's unrealistic to have someone that age budget their clothing expense. Should he be worried about food and transportation as well? At that age, spending money should be for the things that are "extras ". A 10 year old couldn't care less about clothes. That's a basic need that is the responsibility of the parent (food, clothes and shelter).
@sarasarah3404

@@lmaldy14 sorry, i responded when it was very late. I watch this show frequently when it was on air. Essentially, the allowance is $ designated to almost all living expenses. Excluding what a parent needs to provide- shelter, food, and essential clothing. The parents are to utilize the money given an allowance to teach about being responsible with money. So, if 10 year old wants a video game. Sure. But that comes grim your allowance. If they were invited to a birthday party, they can contribute some of the allowances. Its to teach the management of money, not just to blow. I do agree, that giving a 10 year old $43ish a month is a lot. But, you would be providing that money for them (not entirely sure, as i don't have children)

@@sarasarah3404 Oh yeah, I totally agree with the concept. It's just theamoiunt that is too much. Imagine a 10 year old, 13 and 15 year old? That's over $150/ month on allowance? Not even money they earn!
@sarasarah3404
@sarasarah3404 5 жыл бұрын
@@lmaldy14 i agree. It does seem excessive. I don't have children so it's very easy for me to feel comfortable with the idea of an allowance. My thought is that you probably are already providing that $150+ a month regardless. For things like, pizza day at school, or extra school supplies, whatever else a kid wants/ needs. So, you take the allowance $ to put towards it. Its to help teach the management of money. "You went to attend the hockey game next week and it's 15 dollars? Okay then you need to save for ", "Friends birthday is in 6 weeks, if you want ti buy a present you need to save for it". I get not giving $ that'sa not yet earned. But, you don't have ti pay ti get chores completed. "NO, you can't go to the movies/ birthday/ hockey/ pizza if you haven't completed your chores ". Again, idk fully.

I love the cash jars and the suggestion to avoid credit cards but as we move to a cashless society this will become more difficult and require people to use impulse control. Moe Wilson - It was in Philly I think and other urban areas. The idea made sense (less chance of robbery, etc) but lower income people couldn’t shop there because they didn’t have credit cards. It was a discrimination thing. The “cashless” society sounds scary. The people in this series are a result of credit cards. They allow you to live beyond your means and dig a deep hole. I feel for these people. 10 years of living like you think everyone else does might take you 20 years to pay for. It breaks my heart. It makes life harder than it should be. And then wonder about their retirement. Will they have enough? How much do they have saved for their kids college? I didn’t hear anything about life insurance. They got financial obligations (their kids and home) all over the place. If one of them dies (even the wife). For all the Mom’s out there, planned meals are great. Taco Tuesday. It makes it easy. It is a gift. Meatloaf Thursday. Meatloaf sandwiches on Friday for lunch. Good Mom’s pack good lunches. As the kids get older teach them how to make the planned meal. People love to cook. Especially young people. It changes their whole eating attitude. Dad’s can be the expert on burgers and hogs and steaks over hot coals, but someone needs to make the baked potato and a good “salad”. One person can’t do it. It’s not relaxing. There needs to be a team behind him. So the good Mom (or Dad) should make the kids cook. You gotta increase the ability of your kitchen staff.
