Thanks for sharing that misfortune of going through the ice. It has to be the most terrible and helpless feeling. My son and I were snowshoeing near a lake in northern MN and that same thing happened to a couple crossing a lake. They also could safely return to their vehicle which was somewhat nearby. We saw them upon our return as they were parked near our own vehicle. It was a lesson that WE learned through their mishap. We always carried those hooks to pull us up and onto the ice should it ever happen to us. We enjoy both your videos as well as those of Xander and realize the cold winter camping experience through them. Thank you.

It's definitely one of the scariest things imaginable - though in this case it wasn't too dangerous and my greatest fears were inconvenience and having to end my trip. Still a great lesson to remember when stakes are higher on deeper water. THanks for watching, Jerry! And Merry Christmas!

Yeah it's got to be one of the coolest sounds! You ever see people skating on thin ice? It's a sport done in part for the sounds - like lasers in movies. Different from the sound of ice shifting in the night, but also incredibly cool. Thanks for watching, Moe! Merry Christmas!

Some people might question why you tested the lake and fell in, but I for one, think this is a great video and how things happen in life. I am glad you could get back to the car, change your gear and the heater in the car! I really enjoyed this video. I love watching Winter Survival video's and there are a lot of other youtubers who would not have shared the footage and the realistic events that can happen. Much Love from Australia. I think the lowest temp I have been in was -9 Degrees Celsius and - 42 Degrees Celsius, But I was working at a Ice Cream factory. We were not allowed in the -9 for more than 30 minutes and the -42 Snap Freeze for more than 2 minutes. We don't get much lower than -5 in most parts of Australia though. (Can be lower in the Ski/Snowboard destinations though During winter).
@maximbudnick2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I even questioned myself as I did it - but I agree it's important to show mistakes. -42 is a pretty cold - kind of weather where you really start worrying about anything that could go wrong when your outside for even a couple of hours. How did it feel?

Glad you're safe Max loved the video, A couple of years ago I went to a spot where I was hoping to see the northern lights and it was my very first winter trip I had 0 experience and I didn't even know that they had trail markings so I just started hiking and I was looking for a spot that was near a lake but also close to a cover and saw a bunch of trees and some grass started going towards it not realizing I was walking on a pond and bam I went straight through and just like you said in your video my buckle was on and it was so hard to swim I was waist in it was a nightmare to get out, I also went around 2 pm and it got dark around 5 so I decided to stay the night I did not feel cold maybe because of the adrenaline and I had 0 idea how to make a fire so I just put my tent up rolled out my pad and sleeping bag took off my clothes and hopped in in hopes to let my clothes dry out which was another fatal mistake because it was now around 7pm pitch dark and I did not follow any trails and was freezing my ass off so I decided to pack up and try to find my way back and started to panic luckily I saw my footprints and followed them to where I fell but this time used what ever common sense I had to walk around and got to the car safely. P.S It was the cloudiest day ever so I didn't get to see the northern lights but I did come to a warm house

Thank you for showing this Max. That looked terrifying to me inly because i have reynauds syndrome so i took a deep breath when you went in. Some friends of mine and I were campin about a half mile in on a trailhead in January in New England and i we to check out my buddys tent and my snowshoe went through the snow near where his tent was and got stuck in a spruce trap and I couldn’t get my leg back. I started to panic and as i was starting to freak out my entire boot started to completely fill with water. I eventually got my snowshoe and thus leg back but the temps were single digits the whole weekend. Needless to say we survived, i had a second pair of columbias in the truck for winter so i was fine. That stuff is scary, no where near as scary as your deal, but yikes!! Take care man! NQU

Love how you remained calm after falling through the ice. Great Video. Just wondering if you would've put the pack back in the toboggan you would've fell through. You walked across a few time no problem but the the last time you had more weight on body, not sure what your pack weighs in at. Dont know. Regardless glad your got through the unscathed. Great video and happy holidays to you and your Wife. Love your channel.

I think you're right to think that without the backpack I would probably have made it across, but most importantly I should have just taken the longer route this time of year. Happy holidays to you as well, Darrell!

Wow buddy! So happy you're alright...yes lesson learned, accidents can happen fast, but what you are sharing can really mitigate the risk for others by your experience and advice to what you learned. Still, you pulled off some beautiful camera work with the night skies and the snowy woods. Have a Happy Safe New Year to you and yours!

Yeah I was pretty confident it wasn't dangerously deep - but certainly deeper than I expected. The shock was mainly the instant realisation of all the extra work I just created for myself haha. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. All the best and happy new year to you and your family!

Great video Max....having lived most of my life in NH I know the dangers of thin ice or that looks safe and isn't...I don't have to ask you but I would always ask my students after a scary experience two questions: 1. Did you learn from this experience and 2: where did steps 1, 2, and3 (12 steps of AA) not enter into your thinking...in your case you explained how you learned...again great video...keep them coming...by the way our hearts skipped a beat when the ice broke....don't tell zander but my wife likes you better...

Hey Ronald thanks for sharing - and you sound like a great teacher. It was definitely a great learning moment and I'm lucky to have have it in a situation that wasn't particularly dangerous. Thanks a lot for stopping by and leaving a comment. Wishing you and your wife a very happy New Year!

lovely trip and good thoughts about that falling through the ice situation: we make mistakes to learn from them. without mistakes there would be no learning. i really love the sound of the snow under the boots. it just sounds somewhat mesmerizing... and about the sounds of the ice: i highly recommend jonna jinton on youtube. she records hours uppon hours of the sounds the ice makes and she is releasing a whole compilation like an asmr/white noise video of that sounds every year. unfortunately in my area all the snow melt away but thats what youtube is there for :D anyways have a merry christmas and keep up the great work mate

Hey Nachtmahr! The sounds are a big part of what makes winter my favorite season 🙂. Cool I'll check out that suggestion. Merry Christmas and New Year!
