So many arranged marriages without love. No wonder adultery was the order of the day. I feel sorry for Johanna. She certainly was abused and beaten up by her husband. That black eye is an ugly sight. Mary knows Johanna´s love affair is doomed.

Yes, I am absolutely against adultery, but I also think that it was a somewhat inevitable byproduct of all those arranged marriages. Humans are simply like that, our hearts will refuse to live a whole life without love and it will always look for it no matter what society rules say. And some people will, inevitably, succumb to the temptation, even if there is a threat of severe punishment, because they will think it is still worth to risk it than to live a whole life without ever knowing love.

Oh please adultery is even more common today then it was back then all thanks too Movies and TV Shows glorifying cheating and sleeping around. I agree arranged marriages are fucked up. But i wouldnt say it adultery is only the by product of arranged marriages

@@JNG107 No one said that adultery is only the byproduct of arranged marriages. We all know it didn't cease to exist as soon as arranged marriages went out of fashion.

there was the adultery court scene when Johanna's husband said, that he was a good husband because he never beat her more than was usual. So wife beating was common practise. And no one gave a flying fox about men cheating. It was only a bad thing when women were doing it.

2:27 "You Austrians" etc -- The actor playing Johanna's husband is Austrian (with a pronounced Austrian accent), while Max' actor isn't.

Yes. "Love" can most definitely be a sin in some situations.
