Did Brexit And The DUP Make Unionists United Ireland Curious?

Doug Beattie the head of the UUP (Ulster Unionist Party) spoke to local media about emails and messages he has received from members of the unionist community who are becoming more open to the idea of a United Ireland. This is no doubt as a result of the blocking of the formation of the Executive by the DUP and other extreme parties. But, are Unionists becoming 'United Ireland curious'?

As an Irishman I earnestly hope to see my country united in my lifetime, but if unification is to have any chance of success then it cannot be a matter of one jurisdiction enlarging itself to engulf the other jurisdiction. Rather, it must be a matter of both jurisdictions coming together to create a new, third entity, one which has not existed before. And the most important requirement of this new entity must be that religion, any religion, has absolutely no role or function within government, and there is a very clear and unambiguous separation between church and state.

In about 2017, I was in a hotel in London for a conference. Naturally, I ended up in the bar. In this case talking to 3 unionists. They were effectively trying to console me as they thought Brexit was brilliant and they could not understand my concern. They kindly bought me a couple of rounds. I think now that I should console them and they will need the whiskies.

Like Scotland, NI is being ignored. Both places had the sense to stay in the EU and they are seeing it's benefits dissolving before their eyes. The union will be over due to the blue and red tories in the last few years. Good for the people in NI who have had enough! Take control folks because the poloticians have their own sgenda and it is not for the people.

It used to be that people from RoI wanted to leave the country as it was the poor neighbour of UK. Even as recently as the Belfast Agreement that was largely the case, so many Unionists thought the time would never come when the relatively wealthy NI would want to join its impoverished neighbour. Now RoI is UK's wealthy neighbour, and that barrier to NI has been demolished.

Firstly let me say i believe Brexit was a terrible idea for the United Kingdom and if i was an Englishman i would have voted to reject Brexit, but as an Irish Catholic from Northern Ireland i made the decision that Brexit would hasten the day when Ireland would be united once again and that is why i voted for Brexit ...

Max, a majority of my friends are Northern Irish Protestants now have Irish Passport since Brexit. They do not see the DUP or the UUP as there leaders. At the same time by birth Cathoilcs do not see Sinn Fein or the SDLP as there leaders either. Commonality with all is we cannot eat flags, we all work live and lookout for each other. Nelson Mandela once stated he does not respect white South Africans, he loved them. If sovereignty change happens it happens. Sadly we have Northern Irish politicans playing people with one of worst finance period in decades. In 2030 a border will happen, demographics will see to it under the GFA. Key factor is avoiding the DUP and Sinn Fein weaponising it.
