@@XjunkieNL I am a bit concerned about those aquarium filters. This is from the forum thread: But I can just filter it out with my new aquarium filter! Hmm, I don't think you can......... Aquarium Filters for Ultrasonic Cleaners and vinyl -I don't think that the cheap hang-over type filter would do all that much. I tried to look up specs, but there are none apart from flowrate, which should tell you something. Let's say it filtered down as low as 1 micron for example (which I doubt). Everything below that size will still be there (colloidal suspension). Additionally, various salt contaminants will dissolve in the cleaning water and will not be filtrable (thereby raising TDS). There are more expensive canister filters, or industrial type filters like Cuno filter/pump, but the best they can do is around 0.5 micron and they are also expensive. www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/113714-ultrasonic-cleaning-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/page/4/ Have you noticed any drop in the cleaning quality when comparing two filters, Paul?

What is your goal? What do you want to filter out? The info from the forum seems to imply you want to filter the water to be distilled water again. I can imagine if you want to remove all impurities you need a serious filtering solution to do this and an aquarium filter wont do. /Paul

Very informative videos you provide . One question about the Degritter (also pertains to other ultrasonic cleaners). The heavier material cleaned off the record drops to the bottom of the tank and is presumably filtered out by the small filter when the water is drained. However , lighter material cleaned off the record floats to the top of the water level and can leave a line of debris on the record even after cleaning. has this been your experience at all ? Is there a way to minimize this or avoid it? regards
@XjunkieNL2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's very true what you say. Some dirt with float. Also some dirt removed from the record, with the help of surfactants, will have a preference to float. It's easy to recontaminate the cleaned vinyl this way. The Degritter found a solution for this. During the cleaning phase the top water layer is pump through the filter. There is an overflow ridge, a bit like in a swimming pool. This way the unit tries to minimize the possibility of recontamination. Hope this info helps a little bit. All the best. Cheers. /Paul

Great video! As a new owner of a Degritter, I found it very informative and helpful. I have a question regarding the water level, though. It may have been addressed in a previous comment, as I have not had a chance to look through all of them…and if it has, sorry for the repetition! Do you always use the “high level” setting when washing 12” LPs? If so, have you experienced any issues with water damage on the labels? I can certainly see the advantage to cleaning more of the dead wax, as your stylus still has to pass through this area, but have been hesitant about using the “high level” due to my concern about the water getting that close to the label. Thanks!
@XjunkieNL2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Congratulations with your new record cleaning machine. I'm sure you will be very happy with the results. In my settings I still use the highest level. Never seen any water damage. Sometimes it happens that there is a water droplet on the label. It just dried off. The control of the water level seems very accurate, and the unit never over fills the ultrasonic tank. Thanks for watching. Cheers. /Paul

Excellent video, and I appreciate all of the tips you laid out. I'm thinking about finally picking one up in a couple of weeks. Everything I've read and seen seems to indicate it's a worthwhile investment. :-) One question though... what do you clean the filters with if you intend to reuse them? Hi Matt. If you are going the route of an automatic record cleaner, this is one to consider seriously. To answer your question, as you can see in the video I make my own filter. Easy to do, and the costs is probably something like 10 cents. So I don't give it any thought and just replace. Sometimes they are a little dirty, sometimes not. If you want to reuse the original one, rinse them with tap water. They clean pretty easy. Hope this helps. Cheers. /Paul

I have a Watson’s vacuum-type RCM that I use with L’Art du Son fluid (and I’m happy with). I’m tempted by an ultrasonic machine, though. Have you compared the Degritter vs a vacuum type machine? Any comments? Do you think it’s worth 5x the price? Also, I’ve read that some people prefer to do a two stage clean - first on their vacuum-type RCM, then the Degritter. Have you heard of this and do you think that’s better than multiple cycles on the Degritter?
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean. For many years I've used a RCM similar to the Watson type. Later on made my own LoriCraft type RCM. On both I used L'Art Du Son. It was, or actually still is, my favorite cleaning solution. It all depends a little bit on what you are looking for. To get a record clean, both system do a good job. This is something you probably already have experienced and know. With a Degritter you get that clean record, to the next level. Think of upgrading your cartridge to a model twice as expensive. It will make it sound even better. For a really dirty records, I think, the two stage cleaning will work faster. You need some kind of pre-clean to remove the real dirty stuff. This can be a spin clean or a vacuum RCM. Hope this helps a little. Cheers. /Paul

@CapitanHarlockisback3 жыл бұрын
@@XjunkieNL I don’t see any advantage in ease of use. The cleaning power rests to be tested.
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
Ease of use is for me personal related to the amount of automatication of the cleaning process. Compare for example the automatic versus the manual entering of the water in the ultrasonic tank. Cleaning power is defined by the size and amount of cleaning bubbles. No need to test, to know how a 300W unit compares to a 60W unit. As I said before it is not fair to compare both units directly, they are aimed at a different part of the market. /Paul
@CapitanHarlockisback3 жыл бұрын
@@XjunkieNL I’m not sure to understand the difference, you need to fill out the tank in the Degritter , and the ultrasonic tank in the Humminguru (that has an automatic draining System) , you don’t need to release anything. The ultrasonic power is much higher, but a real test (possibly using a microscope) would be the way to go. I really hope that the Degritter is much better, since it costs 5 times more than the Humminguru, but, who knows…
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
The difference is that with the Humminguru you need to manually add the exact right amount of water to the tank with every record you clean. The Degritter automatically drains and fills. The unit is equiped with pumps and sensors to pump the water around. It feels like I'm bashing the Hummingbird, which is not my meaning. You can't expect a 5x cheaper unit to perform the same. It's like expecting a $500 turntable to sound as good as a $2500 turntable. It just doesn't. /Paul

Hello Paul, I recently purchased the Degritter and have had it for about a week. I noticed that when I received it it was cosmetically damaged. I worked it out with the company and have continued to test it with their permission. I have noticed that when I put in a dusty second hand record (which was probably on the light side of dirty) the machine does not lift off all of the light dust even after 3 heavy cycles. The first cycle I did with the solution in the tank and the 2nd and 3rd with distilled water only. I never expected the machine to lift off scuffs or fingerprints. But I did expect the machine to take off light dust that I was able to brush off with an anti static brush and blow off with a bottle air tank, I was even able to blow off some of the light dust that remained by blowing on it with my mouth. I know you have been using the machine for some years and would like to know if that has also been your experience. Maybe my machine is just not working properly. Thank you
@XjunkieNL4 жыл бұрын
Hi Hernandez. Sorry to hear your unit is not working properly. I would not be surprised if the ultrasonic transducers are not functioning. Now, when you start a cleaning cycle, you are just rotating the records in the water and drying them, no real cleaning is taking place. During a degas cycle you can hear if the ultrasonics are working, although I can imagine it is hard to recognize if you don't know what to listen for. It's a kind of buzzing sound, but the rotating mechanism is also making noise during degassing. As an alternative you could open the left side of the unit and check if the electronics that operate the ultrasonic sonics are still okay. I can imagine they got damaged during transport. Anyway it's best to contact Taniel at Degritter, he is more than willing to help you sort this out. Good luck. Cheers. /Paul.

Hi Paul, where did you get that pece of piping? And what's the size? Thanks!
@XjunkieNL4 жыл бұрын
Hi! The honest answer is, out of the tool box of my dad :) They are originally made, to make holes in leather. The size depends a little on the material you want to cut. For example I use a 12mm pipe to make a 10mm hole. Are you also going to make your own filters? Cheers. /Paul

An inherent limitation with the Degritter is that you can not access and clean-out the ultrasonic tank. If you use the device to clean really filthy records, some of the debris will collect in the tank; the filter is not that effective and over-time a sludge will form. Periodic cleaning with Vinegar will only do so much. But, at the end of the day, the dirtier the record that is cleaned by the Degritter, the more maintenance (tank & filter cleaning) you should do. Degritter probably should better address this issue, same as auto manuals state when to change oil, that depending on use, i.e., how dirty are the records you are cleaning (are they flea-market, are they used but clean (DISCOGS); or are they new) your maintenance tasks vary from maybe as frequent as every 20-25-records for flea-market; or every 35-records for used but visibly clean or for just new records as long every 50 records to cover themselves. Otherwise they risk putting themselves out of business with customer support and warranty claims.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the comment. It's possible to clean the ultrasonic tank. Although the opening is not big enough to put in your hands. My personal experience is that cleaning it seems not necessary, most probably because of the shape of the ultrasonic tank. The inside has the shape of a record, with the drain is at the bottom. All the dirt that collects on the bottom is drained out when the ultrasonic tank is emptied. The filter inside catches the dirt before the water is moved the water reservoir. For sure with very dirty records it's better to clean the water reservoir more often. But like with the oil in your car, there seems to be a big safety margin. Cheers. /Paul

The Degritter manual FAQ states this about shellac and lacquer-acetate records: “We have not conclusively tested cleaning shellac or lacquer-acetate records with Degritter. If you do clean one, then do so on your own responsibility”. Which seems odd… it’s really built for 12” LPs, but they have inserts that allow cleaning of 7” and 10” records. Does anyone know if its safe with such records?
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for watching and the question. Unfortunately I have no experience with shellac or acetate records. During beta testing I mainly focussen on 12 inch records. Do you know if there any experience using ultrasonic record cleaning with these kind of records? I would imagine similar results should be possible with the Degritter as the intensity of the bubble implosion is much less and more distributed. Sorry for not being able to be more helpful. Cheers. /Paul

Do you still recommend this cleaner since ultrasonic cleaners damage the vinyl record?
@XjunkieNL2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, I still do. Main reason is the great efficiency of this ultrasonic record cleaner. This makes short cleaning times possible, which limits the possible chances of damaging the vinyl. With the setting at medium, the active cleaning time is approx 3 minutes, and the record comes out clean. Thanks for the comment. Cheers. /Paul

I've done a lot of testing with different cleaning solutions in the machine. The Degritter is the worst solution I've used. At the recommended strength it leaves a veiled, murky sound on the record. I've tested this several times. Fortunately it does rinse. I also feel compelled to mention that inhaling it has a really bad effect on me. I have severe allergies and COPD so it may not bother most but for me standing over the machine caused severe heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Like breathing lacquer fumes. At a minimum I recommend a fan blowing it away from you...
@XjunkieNL2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick. Thanks for sharing your experience. I haven't experienced any side effects from using the standard Degritter solution myself. In my standard mix I don't use it often. Most often I use alcohol instead. Although those fumes are also not the best to inhale. What are you using know as a cleaning agent? Cheers. /Paul
@rickmilam4132 жыл бұрын
@@XjunkieNL I've been experimenting with a number of things. Just alcohol does work pretty well as you said. It also doesn't seem to affect me much. I'm currently trying the A.I. ultrasonic solution for use in the tank, Tegrikleen applied to the vinyl with a fine spray and goat hair cosmetic brush, and the Kirmuss solution, same application. On things that have previously been cleaned on the Kirmuss I've found that just a distilled water rinse opens things up nicely. In all cases (except that one, of course) I finish with a rinse from a 2nd tank. Oh forgot the one I'm using at the moment - L'art du Son, applied like the Tegrikleen and rinsed. It seems quite good. On brand new stuff where mold release agent is an issue I begin with a Nitty Gritty First step on a vacuum machine.
@XjunkieNL2 жыл бұрын
On my DIY Loricraft cleaning machine I used the L'art du Son solution. Was happy with the results, but haven't tried it with the ultrasonic unit. Perhaps you have already seen it, the new prototype of the Degritter can hold two water tanks. Especially for people who finish with a rinse step. /Paul
@rickmilam4132 жыл бұрын
@@XjunkieNL I've the the L'Art on and off. I like it. I use it with the Degritter as a spray/brush on treatment rather than in the tank. Hadn't heard about the new one but I have 3 tanks and swap out for rinsing. I'm not sure which I prefer re it of the Tegrikleen. It's so damn hard to make judgments on some of this stuff. I need a half dozen copies of the same LP in the exact same condition.

I’d love one of these but sadly I can’t afford it. The cynic inside me says the price is due to audiophile markup and is unjustified ..... but I might just be jealous 🥺 I’ll probably get a vacuum based cleaner and deal with the odd pop and click.

Hi Daniel. I know what you mean. Maybe if they sell enough units, the price will drop. Maybe it's helpful to calculate the price per record :) To remove pops and clicks any wet cleaning method will be successful. Ultrasonic cleaning is more about improving the sound quality. Cheers. /Paul

*It's not jealousy. The price cannot be justified. It's a limited use device and I've yet to see a video that shows a dirty record being cleaned. The Estonian company needs to outsource manufacturing to another EU nation with a larger labor force to bring the price down.*
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying. Although I think the company had a different look at the project. They wanted to engineer and build the best record cleaner on the market. They did almost the whole thing in-house from design to production. This gave them complete control over the process. If they outsourced more and used standard components the whole thing would be cheaper. But this would have resulted in compromises they didn't want to make. Thanks for watching. Cheers. /Paul
@hulkhatepunybanner3 жыл бұрын
@@XjunkieNL *The unit price is $3,000. It sells to a market of [mostly] Boomers + serves a medium with limited sales. The Estonians likely know they're selling this to a small market of Boomers (maybe Gen X'ers) so they're going to keep it niche. It allows them to make a lot of money from a small production. But that price will keep them from expanding their customer base and that will end their business. Maybe they expect this as it seems their website hasn't been updated in a couple of years.*
@XjunkieNL3 жыл бұрын
As long as no other competition enters the market, they have found a nice niche. Probably the market isn't big enough to develop a low cost unit. As you're getting in competition with DIY units.

Hi. You're absolutely right, it is an expensive piece of equipment. I haven't done a blind test, but just looking at the technical specifications I'm sure it will give better results. Just look at the power output, the number of transducers used, the position of the transducers, the operation of the frequency. All directed to get better cleaning results. The worst thing about this machine (apart from the price lol) is label damage from water. Happened quite a few times and you only see it under the strong halogen but it's there! Tiny discolored spots from water drops that shouldn't have been there.

@tictocfinewatches2 жыл бұрын
I have only once in over 600 records cleaned gotten water on the label and that's when I first started using it. Degritter provides a strip and you can set your water level depending on how far the strip is from the edge of the record to the label. Once you do that you shouldn't be getting water on your labels. Also, I find that using the cleaning solution that comes with the Degritter increases the surface tension of the water so that it doesn't run down on the label as the record turns.
