I appreciate your video since I happen to have a 2021 KIA Sorento EX AWD with the 2.5 T-GDI. It has been an excellent everyday car since I purchased it new.

Hi C, thanks for watching and sharing! It's incredible to me how many Hyundai parts on my Santa Fe come labeled "Kia"... almost as if they're the same entity. I guess when Hyundai owns 33%, it aligns some things (like Toyota owning a bit of Subaru and borrowing the boxer design for the 86). I think y'all get better air filters though 😉 so glad that our video helped you out and to hear how well the engine is treating you for your daily!! We have now logged 45k miles on ours, and it's still going strong! We strongly believe in performing timely maintenance to keep it running like new for a long time. Take care and stay safe!

If the engine is a combo GDI-MPI, intake valve deposits shouldn't be an issue like in a straight GDI engine. Especially if you run top tier fuel or occasionally use a fuel system cleaner like Redline S-1, Regane, Techron or BG 44k

Hi and thanks for watching! Love your tip to Seinfeld with your user handle, LOL! You are correct that this is a combination engine and while we are told that deposits shouldn't be a problem, provided that we are always using top tier gasoline and in lieu of that always using fuel additives. Not all owners are fully aware of the differences between brands of gasoline, nor of the suggestion to use fuel additives when top tier is unavailable. Many will use the cheapest available and it's my guess that after many miles, build-up will occur. We ourselves don't always use the additives suggested, and the occasional top-tier or additive use isn't going to back-clean the valves as good as an intake cleaner system such as this. Hope this helps offer some explanation; take care and stay safe!

Hold on. All 2.5 Turbo Hyundai engines are dual injection. They have fuel injectors on the ports and direct injection. Since they already have a way to wash carbon deposits off the valves are you just going for the gold on this?

Hi Robert, thanks for making this note and watching. You are correct that this is a combination engine and while we are told that deposits shouldn't be a problem, provided that we are always using top tier gasoline and in lieu of that always using fuel additives per the owner's manual. Not all owners are fully aware of the differences between brands of gasoline, nor of the suggestion to use fuel additives when top tier is unavailable. Many will use the cheapest available and it's my guess that after many miles, build-up will occur. We ourselves don't always use the additives suggested, and we feel the occasional top-tier or additive use isn't going to back-clean the valves as good as an intake cleaner system such as this. Personally, I'd rather spend the time and money performing this service at home, even if for superstition to keep us out of the dealership service area later in the engine life (I guess that is going for gold, then?). Hope this helps offer some explanation; take care and stay safe!

Doesn’t your engine have port as well as direct injection? If so there shouldn’t be a need to clean the intake because of the port injection cleaning the back of the intake valves.

Hi dcb, thank you for watching and noticing this! Yes, the Hyundai 2.5 liter turbo engine (the Theta III) does have both port and direct injection. It is our understanding that cleaning is still beneficial, can delay any advice from the dealership to perform a fuel induction service, and not only that, we did see a very minor gain in fuel economy after cleaning. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that our engine keeps running as optimally as possible for as long as possible. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

What kind of fuel economy do you guys normally get? I have a 2023 limited with 10,600 miles on it currently. I get between 17-22mpg, but have gotten as high as 25mpg. I usually leave it in 'smart' mode, and I do drive spiritedly usually. Going to say 65% highway 35% city.

Hello wantsanewvehicle, awesome name and thanks for watching! Initially after break-in, we saw fuel economy as high as 27 over flat interstate (probably with the wind blowing the same direction we were traveling!), but we saw a downturn over the miles. Our current combined average is 24-26 depending on how much I want to use the turbo off the stop line. Before our intake cleaning, that average was drooping down into 22-24. I try to record every fuel-up and have a mind to try to distinguish trends between seasons, octane, and roads traveled, but I just haven't had the energy to drop my data into a spreadsheet yet. I will offer the advice that we never use 'smart' mode as we find it too sensitive on the gas pedal between an 'economic' and 'sport' acceleration. Both of us will usually drive in comfort mode with the one-off switch to sport for a one-off aggressive acceleration. While we are out in the county a little bit, we do have plenty of stop signs and stop-and-go traffic that we encounter. Hope this helps, take care, and stay safe!

We have a 22 Santa Fe Limited with 17k miles. We get about 19-22 mpg in city driving and 28-29 mpg on round trip long distance highway trips, driving at the speed limit. We leave it in Smart mode. I did recently use Snow mode for the first time during a heavy rain storm that included hydroplaning risk on the highway. I have occasionally run injector cleaner through the gas. I have towed trailers a few times, taking great care to limit slippage in the transmission clutches. So far the engine seems very happy.

@@SpiritedWrenchers Thanks for the reply! Please do an update video if this has improved your fuel economy :D What octane do you guys normally use and if using higher octane have you actually noticed any difference? I always use 87 octane but have run 4 full tanks of 93 through back to back and noticed absolutely no difference in fuel economy or power. I am a little disappointed in the fuel economy of this vehicle, as I came from a 2021 rav4 hybrid that got ~45mpg all day every day with absolutely no change to my driving style/habits and I did not drive it any special way for fuel economy, this vehicle is better in every other way though.

@@wantsanewvehicle We run 87 octane in town and 89 octane for long trips, which allows the engine to run at slightly advanced ignition timing for long periods of time. But I think sticking to the speed limit has the greatest effect on fuel economy.

Does this apply to the hybrid too?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 10 ай бұрын
Hi CD, thanks for watching and asking! I wish I could answer your question with a simple yes or no, but it is more complicated than that. The intake cleaning is needed most with the GDI engines that have direct-injection of fuel to prevent the need for a more costly deeper clean (can also be known as walnut blasting). The Hyundai 2.5 liter turbo-charged engine also has port injection which means that there should be less carbon build-up over time compared to a GDI that only has direct-injection. Based on the Hyundai website, it looks like the hybrid Santa Fes do have a GDI 4-cylinder hybrid engine system that also has both port and direct injection. In theory on paper, our cars should not need this specific cleaning, but, if you're noticing a significant drop in fuel economy and engine response this would be just one easy thing you could do to see if performance improves. We did this because we did see a drop in performance and fuel economy within the previous 5k miles. The fuel economy did improve after replacing the air filters, adding fuel system cleaner, and performing this intake valve cleaning. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

Can't you just use GAS and OIL Additives, good ones, to do whatever "cleaning" needs to be done? Or does this get to spots those don't hit?
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 4 ай бұрын
Hi Lee, thank you for watching and asking this! The Hyundai owner's manual does state to use gasoline additives regularly (coinciding with your oil change interval), but the intake valve cleaning done here more closely mirrors the fuel induction service offered by the dealership service department. It is a deeper clean than what most fuel additives will get you. The needs for this deeper clean will vary with driving style and fuel grades used, but we did notice a minor gain in fuel economy after performing this cleaning. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!
