If you have the money or need. Older equipment can still do just as good if maintained properly.

Why is the cutter the same width as the machine .....

Because at the time that this combine was produced, a 6 row head was average size, and most operators didn't have the money for something bigger, or the need for something bigger. This combine in 200+ bushel corn can only handle a 6 row head. Plenty of older machines are the same way. Not the most unusual.
