Laurel does and excellent job with the video and gets fantastic detail! Great job, especially getting such detail on the frame with the queen and eggs.

I would like to see how you add more bees to that queen if you get time for an extra video. I tried recently and it failed. Thanks for all that you all do. It helps.

I did the same thing yesterday, we did a thin walkaway split from a very strong queen. They made 5 queen cells on each side of two frames never seen that before. We used one frame in a queenless hive left the other for the split plus gave them a frame of brood. hoping for a great queen in both now.

I had a lot of my hives requeen them selves .. I use to split but even the split superseded the queen in the end .

Sometimes that happens to me also. It is frustrating. This is why having multiple hives can help the beeyard stay sustainable. For us we don't want genetics like that in our bees. (We want easy keepers) BUT I know it is easier for us since we have so many.

Thanks for another great video. I didn't know that there could be multiple supersedure cells. There are definitely more than one swarm/emergency cells. Recently the queen in my hive went missing. It was a big hive. There were probably 20 emergency cells. I split them into five boxes. Later, most cells had a well round opening at the end. So presumably the queens are out alive. I am also pretty sure that I found a virgin queen in one of the boxes. Guess what, now all those five boxes are queenless. Four of those were cardboard boxes. So I understand it if they don't like them. But there mother hive, full of honey, is also queenless. These bess certainly have their own mind. Luckily I had a one frame split from the mother hive before that. The split successfully raised a mated queen. So now I have young brood to revive the queenless hives.

Thanks for another great video.. Will hives next to each other rob if both colonies are being heavily fed 1.1 syrup? Thanks Kamon. CT shoreline

Thanks John. The nurse bees will somehow determine which one is the one they will leave and which one (or ones) they will cannabilize (to conserve precious fats/protein)

I have a hive that I did a split from and moved the queen away with some bees. That hive is now trying to supersede her I guess because I notice a capped queen cell and also fresh eggs. The population is not big enough for it to swarm. When they supersede, do they keep the existing queen around until a new virgin is mated? When do they dispose of the old queen or does the new queen do it? Something I’ve always wondered. Thanks.

Do existing queens lay an egg into the supersedure cell to replace themselves or how does it work?

Kamon, will bees bring pollen into the hive if there is not larva to feed?

Thank you for this informative explanation! If I do that, but I only have new frames (no drawn comb), will they draw wax this late in the season? What can I do to encourage them to draw wax? I have a colony, single dip with excluder - they dont use the space wisely - far end framed arent drawn at all. :(

Feeding sugar syrup if no nectar is coming in is the only way. They also have to be brooding good and raising plenty of bees to expand and draw the foundations out.

Believe or not when i have a robbing problem i will put a sprinkler in close proximity to the hives and the robbing stops and the bees will not start robbing again for some time or not at all.. Try it...it will not hurt the bees at all...as you already know stress can knock them back...

Mocks the tiny split last video. Shows you that you can make a successful 1 frame split, with feeding. Me: slightly confused.

Look at a mann lake mini mating nuc. Less than one frame of bees.
@kamonreynolds

This split raised a queen successfully because the cell was developed by a large colony. If the original didn't take this little colony could have easily been plugged in. We were fortunate and received 2-2 on our takes. However, This little hive queen is now under utilized as she could raise up a packed double deep by herself if she had the work force. It would take months for this colony to be honey production sized. The big colony I broke down the middle however will allow both queens to go full throttle on their laying and they will both fill another deep of bees if I gave them comb or if I give them foundation they might draw that on this fall flow. Mini nucs and single frame hives are just a little stress away from an abscond. A big hive (8+ frames) makes more brood, more honey, draws combs, consumes feed quickly, and is less work. Yes small mating nucs have their place, but give me 1 big colony over 5 1 framers with a queen.

Great shots of the larva! I don't know what kind of camera setup you're using but maybe attaching a light, like a rechargeable Nitecore Tip or Tini, could show the eggs better even in daylight.
