Agree with you. The XD clearly out performed the other two tested yet Wilson talked up the weak fragmenting round. A 115gr round at only 1100 fps that falls apart is nothing to get excited about. I think Wilson clearly doesn't understand what a gel test is!

I get what you're saying. I've been carrying Xtreme Defense in a Sig 365 for a few years and I like them. I haven't tested them side by side but as an all around 9mm round I think you would like them. That was the only ammo I would carry in a .380 and a 9mm isn't a lot larger.

I love the ballistic testing. Especially the hog, it's not often that you get to see real life tissue performance on a full mammal. Some ideas for future tests: compare the Lehigh Xtreme defense to the Liberty 9mm ultra light +p 50gr, Liberty 9mm overwatch 72gr, G9 external hollowpoint +p 80gr and their law enforcement 77gr armor penetrating cavitator. It would be super interesting to see how your light-for-caliber loads stack up to the competition.

The new bullet is cute, the Max is neat but I personally will stick with the Extreme Defender bullet! I like that the round nose profile functions 100% in all of my pistols (even the somewhat finicky AMT Backup .380), the bullet is barrier blind and that it just flat works! The penetration is perfect, as is the destruction it causes! Honestly, I don't think a better bullet can bought at any price! Cheers, jc

Excellent product testing and demonstrations, and much appreciated. I may need to consider changing my gal’s load out to the Lehigh Maximum Expansion for her 9mm. That being said, I’m curious if you’d consider a series of demonstrations involving human torso gel simulation dummies that demonstrate expectable results when, Heaven Forbid, one may actually have to draw their weapon and fire upon an attacker. They Incorporate simulated tissue, organs, blood, bones, etc. so this might give people such as myself who are primarily concerned with self defense a somewhat more “realistic” idea of how we could expect each of these types of rounds to function in such a scenario. I also wouldn’t mind seeing how they handle against various types of personal body armor. Only my thoughts, and again excellent vid and much appreciated😺

That's what I carry every day in my KelTec P-32. These xtreme defense bullets along with .32 ACP +P rounds produce FBI penetration and decent wound channel. Ya, I know, its just a .32 ACP, but I just haven't been consistent in carrying anything bigger.

Nine inches penetration with complete energy dump as demonstrated would be excellent for an "inside bullet". ...inside the house, inside the body and not going through the neighbor's wall and killing his cat. The Fed standard is built around defeating barriers such as walls and windshields, and it's good but not optimal for use inside.

Why was the Max Expansion line re-designed to a 3 pedal projectile that only penetrates 9" in gel? I have the old line which penetrates almost 12" and has 4 pedal's and really wish I could purchase more. It's spectacular ammo and coming just short of the FBI 12" minimum I think is great...9" is significant change.

The extreme defender is the best all around bullet in the market. It’s barrier blind, has great penetration, temporary sound cavity and expansion even though it’s an not a hollow point. I have about 500 rounds of the stuff and it’s my go to for carry ammo.

@@kennethferguson4283 the XD is definitely the best all around handgun round. WC should just limit production to the XD and the traditional HP round. The EP round basically does the same thing as the ED, but doesn’t have as good external fluid expansion and only goes slightly deeper in penetration tests. I think if they reduced the bullet designs to just the two ED and HP bullet designs in the handgun rounds and then work on developing a rifle round with that kind of performance, it would not only reduce costs but increase availability. The controlled chaos is a great round in the rifle line but it’s so expensive. I would like to see the performance of the ED in the handgun round worked into the rifle rounds but continue the petals if it’s possible. It’s a different animal, I know, but that’s what R&D is for. Maybe add a steel core or even a steel penetrator shaped like the ED on the tip with an all copper projectile behind it or infused with the steel core and combine it with the controlled chaos design. That would be a deadly round with barrier blind capabilities, especially in a 77 grn load for 556, 125 grn 300 Blk and a devastating 168 grn 308 round!!!! I don’t know the legality of it but green tip is legal. I don’t think they could use the steel penetrator of the M855 A1 for civilians outside the secondary market call off the truck. A tungsten penetrator would be the best choice, but apparently we need China for the tungsten. So many possibilities!!! With the new 6.8 mm with the 2800-3K velocities out of a 13.5 barrel, these designs will be ridiculous.

What I am concerned with is what velocities these were fired at. If the speed is too low or too high, the performance would be different. I don't see many loadings with these projectiles readily available, so if I load myself, is there a loading/pressures I need to use to achieve the performance in this video.

Not sure it helps you, but I'd bet the XD lines will perform nicely and proportionally to bullet speed because the projectile doesn't change shape. It likely performs quite similarly from low end to high end pressures. It's the expansion line and controlled chaos lines that may vary significantly with speed. Considerable testing would need to be done with those to find the deployment speed for the pedals.

I use a 190gr .451 extreme defense as my carry bullet. About 1000fps out of my gov length 1911s. Did gel testing and they outperform several different 200 and 230 gr trafitional jhp bullets I’ve used in the past, as they don’t plug up, and I’m getting about 16”of penetration in gel with layers of denim. Only jhp that I would run after my tests is golden saber bonded.

While I prefer the 135 Xtreme Defender bullet, I've found the Speer Gold Dot 230 gr. Short Barrel is a good second choice! Works down to 730 fps in my tests but does better the faster you can make it go! I load them to around 950 fps and they make a good back up to the 135 Lehigh bullets! Cheers, jc

the controlled fraction is like the federal Syntech defensive bullet looks like, but federals is 138 grain , and relatively affordable compared to other premium ammo, check out beyond seclusion video on the Syntech. the X-Treme defense 90 gr and 90 gr+P I personally carry it in 9mm my G19 , G17 , M&P 2.0 I just started mixing in a few Federal Syntech 138 gr. with the Leigh in my back up carry magazines. With the leigh i have no concerns of accuracy, barrier blindness, penetration or terminal performance. In my 380 (G42) i stager the Leigh 68 grn x-treme defensw with the extreme penetrator and don't feel under gunned one bit. Lehigh ammo exudes quality and confidence. MHO will have to compare the new controlled fracture to my Federal Syntech 138 gr.

@@jaydunbar7538as a former combat medic it makes perfect sense, but I don’t have any actual specific knowledge of THEIR criteria. 9 inches into center of mass into an unarmored opponent will cause maximum stoppage without over penetration and hitting other targets. The temporal cavity produced from the shockwave and the permanent cavity from the round are what cause the stopping power in mammals. That’s the reason that M-16’s went to 5.56 instead of 7.62 because they were less lethal; it takes multiple opponents out of a fight when dealing with wounded and it’s less likely to have KIA from friendly fire. Having the most powerful round isn’t always the best choice for every scenario; especially in dense urban environments

plug it in a ballistic calculator. i use a red dot on my carry pistols and use the xtreme defense.. appr.1350 fps out of 4in G19. with .75 rmr hight over bore and a g1 coefficient .089 (i think) and you are shooting point blank inside a 2 in circle to 80 yrds and inside a 5in circle to 100 or so... want better 100 yrd than -5in at 100 then adjust your zero yrds. i zero at 10 yrds.

I see an interesting philisophical difference between Lehigh's approach versus the makers of premium standard JHP loads. If you know in advance what sort of shot you will be taking, you can choose a Lehigh round that is optimized for your particulr scenario. On the other hand, if you really don't know what you will be up against, as in police patrol, you may be better served with a conventional JHP load that does "well enough" across a variety of conditions. I do see the Lehigh loads as being good choices for use in civilian settings. I'm particularly impressed with Bill's report of the effectiveness of the Controlled Fracture round on hogs. I would not have expected that to be the case.

And my guess is the larger petals carry more mass and allow them to travel further. Which causes more tissue damage for blood to escape from. They are kinda similar to the xd round where you get good barrier blind ballistics.

I have a very "Legitimate Concern" on the ME that 9" penetration is NOT deep enough. So a really big terrorist walks into Walmart, say 6'3" and about 310 pounds. Its not going to go in deep enough because remember he's going to be wearing a t-shirt, flannel shirt and maybe even a coat on top of that as well. So do you see the problem with that particular bullet??????

Bill Wilson is really getting greedy! First off his guns are ridiculously expensive! Then every little improvement becomes a "New" model, rather than an option on an existing (and successful) model. Now he buys an ammo company and promotes the bullets as the latest "wonder slug" with super penetration (actually - OVER penetration), and the "ultimate stopping power"! ENOUGH! His guns are high quality - yes. But also, over priced, so he can go on another safari for his obscene trophy room! I'd like to have one of his SFT guns, but I will not over pay for a gun that is better than I am!
