I believe the reason they're told to act rude is to hurt the customer's ego and channel them into buying it so that they can look down on that employee, it's a clever move and plays cunningly with the little ego human's put before logic.

While I was in college I worked in a high end grocery store. I worked in the meat and fish counter. We did well against local competition but we really started to pull away when we increased the “look” of our meat and seafood counter and raised our prices. The higher we raised the prices in the most well off part of town the more product we sold. It was like a Jedi mind trick. Our margins were absolutely ridiculous. When we put items on sale they NEVER sold. People would ask “What’s wrong with the fish? Is it old?” After this we raised prices even more and never put anything on sale. After a few years the owners sold the store to Whole Foods for millions of dollars. Rich people think differently. Honestly when it comes to buying products rich people are friggin stupid!

Well yes but actually no. Diamonds are more common than people think. They’ve been monopolized, yes, but they are by no means all that precious. Heck, there are kimberlite pipes all over the world, including several spots in the U.S., where I live, and Canada. Diamonds are NOT rare. I don’t care for them. That ego trick only worked in the past. Nowadays when I walk into a D&G or Gucci store, they treat me with a solid amount of respect. Because first of all, I don’t bullshit. I walk straight to the item I’m looking for, ask them for the right size. Buy it, then I’m on my way out. The reason for them to be rude is when they can see customers who are trying to waste their time.

Rude sales people are generally operating from a stereotype and sometimes false image of wealth and have a bias toward people they think can afford to buy. However, with that attitude, they may miss out on wealthy people that don't walk around announcing it through their image. Some of the most wealthy I've run across in my work are down to earth and can afford more than those who flaunt what they have.

No I likely won’t buy the most expensive thing in your store but I like the brand and have been looking for a good bag from them for forever for a little under $1000. But everytime I walk in their employees attack and look down on me and pestering with questions “what are you looking for? What price point? Oh you’re just browsing *proceeds to follow me or stare at me the entire time* or even the “oh we have no sales going on right now” the moment I stepped in. so I just stopped trying to walk in. 🤷🏻‍♀️ never ended up buying, didn’t need it either.

I worked luxury retail sold $34,000 handbags etc. I was also nice. And I was never trained to be rude. What a lot of people may not know is the “up” system. When you walk into a store and you say hi, or someone says hi to you there the ones that are now your customer. And if that customer says I’m just looking and leaves without making a purchase. Now that employee that said hi moves to the back of the line. And lost an opportunity to make a sale. So if there 6 people working that day. You can wait up to 4 hours if the traffic is slow before your allowed to make another attempt of selling. My store had maybe 20 people per day walk in. And we have 4 employees. Do the math.

So is that why that asshole at Sunglass Hut suggested my mom go buy me aviators somewhere else and lectured her about how dare she get her child good sunglasses to match her glasses prescription and suggested I go buy something cheap from LensCrafters? Never shopped there again. Not a good business model.
