Max - I'm so pleased that I discovered your channel. I've been following other great mentors like Joe Gilder and Gregor but I have an especially great appreciation for how detailed your tutorials are. I never have to stop and try to figure out what you just did - the detail and repetition built in to your presentation does it all. I'm an older guy with a degree in music from a long time ago - prior to MIDI! I've been composing and recording with ProTools for about 15 years and switched over to Studio One 2 years ago. I mostly create rock and metal music and generally have no problem with the drums... But I do want to get into electronic music production... One time I tried to make electronic music, but I was lazy with the sample selection part, and the whole song still pretty much turned out to be a rock song, lol... At least the song turned out to be pretty good tho... Edit: It's pretty interesting how you shift some beats to not be perfectly on the grid every time... In rock or metal you generally can get away with it since the imperfection of the other instruments will mask the perfection of the drums... But it's a pretty interesting little detail, I probably will start incorporating it into my own music...

Nice! You should definitely try it out. I also love programming rock and metal drums and have done a ton of it in the past. I grew up playing metal on guitar - was a big part of my life. Did you see I have a big video all about sample selection? It's in the description of this video.

A great video, Max. My question: when do you use "pattern mode" to make beats and when do use piano roll to make beats? For me, subtle varieties of a basic beat are easily done in pattern mode and for volume adjustment, I prefer the "piano roll" method.

I only use piano roll. This is both because of my past history and habits, but also because I feel piano roll gives me better control over many specifics. Velocity, note length, micro timing changes, pattern variation, etc.

Well this beat is made with a variety of samples from my own collection, processed quite intensively on multiple tracks and in the drum bus. Not super easy to recreate!

Rather than doing all of this manual and time-consuming work, I prefer to just run my drums through delays and other types of processing which take care of adding many subtleties and variations, and if it doesn't sound good I just mess with the parameters or the effects until it does. This is a much less cerebral and more of an intuitive way of making drums sound good. There's a lot of luck involved, but it's also a much less painful and boring way of working for me, compared to doing all this manually.

I haven't seen Sonar in years... I'm fan of S1 in basically every aspect. The interface and design is awesome, lots of great features, some nice stock plugins, etc. I believe there is a free trial...maybe you should give it a shot!
