Boy, does she do this masterpiece justice. For me, it so vividly captures the simultaneously buttoned down yet brimming with emotion magic of so much of Ravel’s music.

But don't you think it's too fast? This piece is supposed to have a dreamy quality to it and she's blowing through it like she's running late to the airport. This is of course my opinion, but check out Vladimir Perlemutter and Pascal Roge playing this piece, I much prefer their interpretation.
@homersimpsonIV7 ай бұрын
@@davidsheriff9274no, I don’t really think that way. For me, it’s simply a question of whether or not a musician is able to convey some of the inherent magic of a great composition in their interpretation, whether slow or fast or both in the same piece. Same for Roge and Perlemuter. Their interpretations of Ravel move me, too. As long as the musician isn’t asleep at the wheel or, for some reason, insufficiently sensitive to the “life” within a piece they’ve chosen to interpret, we listeners usually are in for a treat.

@@homersimpsonIV You're right, personal interpretation of the piece is not that important, the important thing is that it's played from the heart, I was not criticizing her, I was just talking about my opinion.

@@davidsheriff9274Yes, from the heart - and in that “mind-meld” of musician and composer that makes for such satisfaction and delight. Thanks for sharing your opinion! It’s as valid as any interpretation, in its own right.

Imo, this is one of the finest things Ravel ever composed. It's so vivid and warm but cold and tranquil at times. It captures everything perfectly

This piece describes so well what I feel while watching a sky full of stars, very sheeny, harmonious, mysterious and incredibly beautiful, Ravel was one of the few who knew how to use the tone of the piano, especially in the high register

Martha is one of our greatest pianists! She plays everything and does everything well. Astounding repertoire! Her technique is prodigious. The speed of some of this Ravel piece is astounding. Given some of the later Ravel piano works, this is not one of his more difficult works. However, there are some technical difficulties buried in it and she whips the piece off will little or no effort. One knows that when Martha plays something, it will be done brilliantly and with great ease. As I said for someone else: it is like "water off a duck's back."

Respectfully, I think -- given the frantic pace she takes the whole piece -- that Martha Argerich didn't much care for this music. Too bad, because she could have given it the justice it deserves, but (apparently) chose not to.

Верно, но что уж поделаешь, музыкантская мудрость и зрелость приходят только с годами. Горовиц в 30-е- 40е тоже был бледная копия того, что появилось в 70-е.
@yuliyachilders10 ай бұрын
It certainly can be a very useful exercise to play any piece extra fast to see sort of the "eagle's eye" view of the movement's architecture, but it's not a performance. When the character, detail, charm and everything else falls victim to the tempo, no matter how virtuous and brilliant, it's not worth your time. Martha is one of the foremost brilliant virtuosi out there, even 60 years later, but I cannot, for the life of me, understand her tempo choices. It's like watching the hurricane, it certainly is very imposing and thrilling, but there is no way to appreciate the finer points. This music is about finer points. Sorry. No.

Martha misses the sweetness. She plays like it’s allegro con brio. Ravel marked it Modéré doux et expressif. for good reason.
