I have a couple multitool ideas that i hope a company would make in the future 1.) Plier based multitool with implements for tire repair that uses those ruber sticky strips so it would have a pointy pick with abraisive sides, a small rounded fork to insert the sticky rubber strips and a knife, Also a set of allens 2. Motorcycle chain breaker with additional implements: chain stretch checker, sprocket teeth checker, tire thread life checker. and if possible common box wrench sizes. These two will be in every motorcycle riders pocket if designed well, and if marketed well.

I'm a boatbuilder and after almost dropping my Surge (a gift from my mother) into the harbour a couple of times I bought the Daicamping Surge clone. I've been using it every day at work for over a year now and I'm more than happy with it. My Surge now lives at home for odd jobs around the house and I bought a second clone (the Bibury version) that stays in my EDC backpack kit

I got a Leatherman Surge for Christmas (my first Leatherman), returned it and got that new 2 tone Bibury. I’ve had the stainless Bibury as my daily driver for 6 months and it is a superior build and finish to the Surge when I sat them side by side. It’s really sad to see an American brand get outclassed by a tool 1/4 of its price, but I can’t carry an inferior tool just because of its brand name.

Wow! That is interesting. I've been carrying a Swiss Tool X for 20 years. The knife and file are worn out. I'm sad that Victorinox does not have a repair program for it. My local stores carry a variety of Leathermans but not the Surge. The Surge is the best contender the the Swiss Tool X. I would have spent the $150 for the Surge if it was available locally. I started to buy the Surge online and the Bibury clone popped up so I read the review. Then more reviews. So, I ordered the Bibury Pro on Amazon. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm anxious to see it. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Leatherman quality. I've had two of them in the past, 35-40 years ago and they did not hold up. To hear that you actually traded the Leatherman for the Bibury is encouraging. 🙂

The gator socket or gator bit is what I always called it. We never used them regularly but when we needed a bolt that rusted or was smashed to the point where a normal socket couldn’t do the job. We’d use a gator bit to grab ahold of the problem bolt and get er done.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on the hex breaking or the pivots snapping, if you put full torque on it. Bolts normally rust into place and have to be broken loose or have a chemical to eat that rust away, like penetrating spray. Multitools are not solid like a breaker bar is and that will probably end with alot of Multitools breaking.

I just got that same bibury, but didn't get the warranty(was still $42+tax for me)... due to seeing most extended warranties as scams. One way to look at it... if the tool was bad enough to warrant 'needing' the warranty, then the warranty wouldn't be offered in the first place, as the company would not be profitable due to losing too much replacing bad tools... or they just sell in such bulk that it doesn't matter how many replace. :D Either way, the multitool seems pretty well built. And the inclusion of replaceable cutters(and a second set AND the tool to replace them), a larger-ish set of scissors, both plain and fully serrated blades, a t-shank holder that can be used with name-brand saw blades, and a 1/4" bit holder that can, again, use quality bits... makes this a hell of a value. I would definitely like to see what force those cast holders can hold up to.

The bibury's majorly went up in price. The wave clone is $40 now, and the surge clone is $60.. Honestly though, they're probably still a good value for that price. At 1/3 the price of the wave, you get way more than 1/3 of the quality and usefulness of a wave.

Absolutely agree. The Bibury "surge" is the best! I've got two for myself and one to gift. I have the non-black version and I lightly sanded them with very fine sandpaper, almost polishing them. It removed a bit of "harshness" I felt when holding them, now they are buttery smooth! In Europe they go through a funny price cycle where they will cost a little above 40€ for a while and then switch to like 71€ BUT with a 50% discount box you can tick. That makes them just 35-36€!

It's fine for you to have a preference against assisted opening knives, but that doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with them. Sog, like almost every other knife company, makes assisted and non-assistant varieties. Kershaw makes incredible assisted knives and some amazing non assisted varieties as well. I have carried both kinds in 27 different states and have never had an issue with the legality of either. And I have assisted knives that are going on 20 years old and have never had an issue.
@1980JPA10 ай бұрын
Many times the assisted feature is literally an extra step taken by the company to avoid dealing with the nuance and tolerances necessary for creating "good action". It's no coincidence that so many gas station knives are assisted. It's a "lazy" way of making sure the knife flips open quickly every time. In many instances the assisted feature may indicate a lack of quality or effort into the design and construction of the knife and for that reason it's existence on a knife can be mentioned as a negative unless made by a trusted company known for their proficiency in that areas. Nothing wrong with them existing, nothing wrong with liking or even preferring them. Some companies do a great job with it. Also nothing wrong with stating one's dislike of them in your own vid where the whole point is stating your thoughts and opinions.
@maxlvledc10 ай бұрын
There is A LOT wrong with assisted knives but it boils down to being a reflection of cost savings and lazy engineering. Any good manual flipper will be both faster, easier to deploy..and last longer (assisted knives become extremely dangerous as the detent tab wears down)

The screws are very tight to the point is hard to open the serrated knife and scissors. Is there a way to fix this? I ordered the tool through amazon and as you might know, everything that amazon sell is defective. After 2 replacement they just refunded me and let me keep the defective unit, that’s why I can’t send it to leatherman for repair.

Yes it is because it works good when I use the pliers. It locks very well when I used the pliers but it doesn’t engage when I close it. I remember you said the scissors doesn’t cut very well on your black oxide surge, mine does the same thing. I inspected it and noticed that one blade is not straight, it could be bent or they ground it to much when they sharpened it. Right in the middle of one blade. When I close the scissors and hold the 2 blades together, I can see the space between the 2 blades. It was my first surge but it was also a very bad experience.

Why do you think Leatherman is Out of Stock for the Free Series (you mention it being suspicious) ? You think they are trying to push the sale of the Arc? Or discontinuing them?
@labandlegacy10 ай бұрын
Yeah I noticed that mention as well. I haven't been into the EDC "culture" long, but as a newcomer, Leatherman is coming off more and more like "hype beast" companies in sneaker culture. Manufactured scarcity tactics, creating huge price leaps and inflated value, especially in the reseller market. When everything a brand releases seems like a "limited edition" with a huge price jump, it's really addictive and almost impossible for them to stop, especially if they continue to sell out.

@@labandlegacy Agreed. Leatherman has a lot of Brand-loyalist which they are playing for profit. The limited edition stuff is super annoying, and even their Arc like for $230 is borderline ridiculous... Having said that they do make nice quality tools and their warranty process is nice. Also, I understand making stuff in America has a higher cost associated with it to employees and regulations (vs China and Child labor). So, there is a part that I am willing to be flexible about. Ultimately, they are a business, and they employ typical business opportunities/marketing.

Whats really annoying is that the second Bibury tool which you got for $35 in the US is £70 in the UK, which is $90 US Dollars. Which completely takes it out of the budget range! 😢

What about DL30 from Ali express?
@odie776410 ай бұрын
Amazon is giving me a one off 50% discount on the bibury 31 in 1, making it £35 in the uk. I'm tempted at that price. But have way too many multitools. Currently edcing a juice cs
