They’re under a company called parastar entertainment! It’s a company for individuals who are disabled but wanna pursue a career as an idol!

Small correction, but they're a company that have individuals pursuing different careers while being disabled (classical music, sports, comedians etc) ^^ They only got into the whole idol thing with Big Ocean ^^

Additional information. PARASTAR is the only actual management company representing disabled persons in Korea.

I can add some additional info since I'm really into them (if you need to know more just ask me). About that english part, they know that most of their fanbase is overseas (disabilities are still taboo in Korea) so they're using only english in their tiktok lives everyday. If they don't know some words they just quickly translate through phone. Hyunjin had been doing some tiktoks showing he's live struggles and funny sides of hearing impairments so that's why he's most comfortable and charming on camera.

wait its really taboo? i thought they spoke in english since its in their main audience 😭😭

Hyunjin was a KZbinr before, so he has the most experience in front of a camera, Ji-seok was a professional skier, and Chanyeon was an audiologist

It's my understanding that they've only been together for a year and a half before debuting and I don’t think they've live together in a shared dorm like other K-pop stars. Also, all 3 of them had successful careers separately before coming together. There is also a bit of an age gap between the members. So, it makes sense to me that we haven't had a chance to really see their bond or comradery come up to the surface yet. I think what they've accomplished is amazing and I'm really, really excited to see them grow and follow along with whatever is next for Big Ocean! Im a new fan for sure! 🙂🙂🙂🥰🥰🥰

In regards to kpop groups that are just some friends that decided to get together and make music, the only one I know of is Onewe. 4 out of the 5 members were childhood friends and started a band as teenagers, met the last member at a music show type thing, and debuted with a company some years later. One of the members actually has a twin brother in Oneus, another group under the same company. They're actually referred to as "brother groups" and all the members between the two are extremely close, it'd be interesting to see a reaction one day if you ever feel like it!

There’s also PLAVE and ATEEZ (kinda but not really). PLAVE’s Yejun called up his friends Eunho and Noah who respectively called up their friends Bamby and Hamin to start the group. As for ATEEZ, them being friends was kind of an accident. Yunho and Mingi were highschool friends and auditioned for KQ without the other knowing. Wooyoung and Yeosang were buddies in Big Hit Entertainment. When Yeosang left for KQ, Wooyoung followed him because they promised they’d either make it or fail together.

Another addition to this (if you count it as Kpop some say its K-indie or K-Rock) is The Rose. They started out as friends that went out busking. At first just Dojoon and Jaehyeong, until Dojoon got busy. Then Jaehyoung and Hajoon met and started busking. Eventually all three came together as an Indie band under the name Windfall, then Dojoon recruited Woosung as the fourth member. After that they entered J&Star Company. The year after that they debuted under the name The Rose. They are now fully independent under their own company which they named Windfall.

Regarding the early 'rehearsed' feel - a LOT of groups have a canned explanation of their group/group name and their most recent release. The un- or less-scripted parts of the interview always happens in addition to that basic info dump.

Might I recommend looking into Sean Forbes and Wawa (aka Warren Snipe). Both of these gentlemen are Deaf rappers in the US. You can get a better understanding of Deaf culture in general and how they precieve their Deafness and identities. Please consider working on changing your vocabulary to "deaf or hard of hearing". Impairment implies brokenness and being less. Many, many Deaf people *do not* see themselves that way. To most, deaf is not a dirty word and the way hearing people dance around it is awkward and makes Deaf people feel very "othered".

Two examples of artists who further explored their respective mediums while living with the onset of disability partway through life are Beethoven and Frida Kahlo, though there are many many more where they came from! Like you two mentioned in the video, sometimes all it takes to open doors to new possibilities is one person (or a trio, in this case) trying their hardest! I really look forward to seeing Big Ocean grow as artists ❤️

Onewe and The Rose are the only groups i know of that are self made friend groups that decided to be idols /rock stars together
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF4 ай бұрын
it's true most kpop groups don't come together organically, the company chooses the members based on what kind of group they want to debut, and what roles they want filled. but typically many of them already knew each other and were friends from training in the company together for years before they debut, so that's why they generally still have pretty good camaraderie, even when the company chooses the members and puts them together in a group. there are some groups here and there where the members rather than the company chose each other. Stray Kids is one example i can think of, they all decided to form a group together because they had bonded while training, and successfully were able to debut like that

Humility is not a specific K-pop phenomena.. Korean culture in general values humility

Kpop hasn't tended to be about humility previously either. It used to be about being perfect and untouchable, not appealing and approachable.

I think if you asked deaf people living in the US or Canada or any European country you would find attitudes to deafness not much different to Korean society to be honest !! Let’s not be complacent or smug about that !
@maxpbeaumont6 ай бұрын
Are you okay? Lol
@klaramell6 ай бұрын
Yes true. I live in western europe and unfortunately there's still a lot of stigma and structural discrimination against deaf people (or people with disabilities in general). But i can imagine that it's still harder/worse in south korea.
@DouglasMcfarlane-m2u6 ай бұрын
Yup I’m fine thanks 😃 .. thanks for your concern lol . Hope you okay too .. as a deaf person I find it interesting when hearing people comment on experiences of deaf people or when they try to understand what their experiences might be .. what might have been interesting was to have a deaf person join you on the couch .. I’m from the UK and travelled extensively around the world and lived in Korea, Japan and Thailand for many years and I’ve also in the US most recently .. I can tell you guys from first hand experience attitudes to disability not much different which ever the country .. the way these attitudes expressed or manifest may be slightly different but they still exist ..

@@DouglasMcfarlane-m2u Interpreter here, I'm curious, what was your experience in the countries that you have been to regarding Deaf rights?
