I kind of did the same thing with my hydration pocket too. but i folded a stiff tarp and shoved it in there. more weight and bulk, but multi use.

Duncan SN it’s not a running bag but wouldn’t be horrible in a pinch, winching down the straps helps

Would a military poncho and poncho liner fit easily in the main compartment? Or would it be kind of crammed?

Should fit, though it really will depend on what else you plan to put in there. You could also consider putting it in the straps along the bottom of the bag for quick access and it wouldn't take up any space.

@@EDC_Tactical it won't be easy but if ya want 2 ya can get certain MOLLE Pouches in Black & paint them in2 the matching Hybrid Color as your Pack from this video using Khaki Camouflage Spray Paint & Foliage Green/Grey Camouflage Spray Paint then attach them!

I honestly would suggest going with one of Maxpedition's wider options if you're looking for something that would work well for books and binders (presumably a school bag). This bag is designed to fit between your shoulder blades and would be a tight fit depending on how wide the books and binders were.
