In honor of the 1924 Around the world flight I have made the 1/72 diorama of the Douglas World Cruisers using the Williams Bros. kit.
On April 6, 1924, four Douglas World Cruisers, each named after a major American city (Seattle, Boston, New Orleans and Chicago) began the first leg of the historic around the world flight. They took off from Sand Point on Lake Washington in Seattle. The 8 men were:
Pilot/commander Maj. Frederick Martin and flight mechanic SSgt. Alva Harvey in the Seattle.
Lt. Lowell H. Smith (pilot) and 1st Lt. Leslie Arnold in the Chicago,
1st Lt. Leigh P. Wade (pilot) and SSgt. Henry H. Ogden in the Boston and
Lt. Erik Nelson (pilot) and Lt. Jack Harding in the New Orleans
There were no fatalities but only two of the planes original planes completed the flight with one lost in a crash and one lost at sea after a successful water landing. A spare aircraft joining them late in the mission so that 3 could arrive at the final destination.
