Roxette was a Swedish pop rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. Formed in 1986, the duo became an international act in the late 1980s, when they released their breakthrough second album Look Sharp! Their third album Joyride, released in 1991, became as successful as its predecessor.

Per and Marie were from the same town and knew each other from the music scene. Per Gessle’s band Gyllene Tider was huge in Sweden, but sang in Swedish. They released an album in English under the name Roxette, but it flopped. Then Per came to think of Marie and figured her fantastic voice might help him get that international break. His band had already split up (they reunited later) so he relaunched the Roxette project but now with him and Marie as a duo. Marie was a great songwriter, but saved her songs for her solo career. In Roxette she just performed the songs that Per wrote.

Per is a hit-making "machine" and Marie contributed with her awesome voice... The drummer, Pelle, also sadly passed away only 1 year after Marie did.. I used to meet him at our local Cafe here in Stockholm almost every week.. He was a very sweet and kind Soul ! ..R.I.P. Pelle and Marie !!!!

Originally a Christmas song by Roxette, that didn't make that much attention. And when the director for Pretty Woman asked them to do a song for the film, they didn't have the time. So Gessle changed the lyrics and the rest is so to say, history.

Wow! This was a wonderful reaction video. I'm so glad you watched a live performance and the inserts of other clips, including Per in Gyllene Tider were fantastic. I've never seen any other reactor do that. I do wish you hadn't inserted the clip of Marie falling through...I've always avoided watching that 😢. Marie was simply the best. Per was the main songwriter for Roxette but Marie's solo material is absolutely wonderful. Roxette have soooo many great songs. 👍

I normally prefer studio versions of songs, especially when it comes to singers with a special voice, like Marie Fredriksson did. It was amazing. She sang a couple of really great songs in swedish too. The song Sparvöga is one of them. In that song you can really hear her fantastic voice. She was a bright star that faded out way too soon. She is greatly missed.

Roxette was the BEST!!! Listened to their music day and night during my teenage years (and also a lot afterwards 😉👍🏻). They will always have a place in my heart. Can really recommend you to listen to Maries solo albums and songs. So many beautiful songs. ❤ RIP Marie. ❤️

Roxette got their big break with the song The Look. An american tourist in Sweden bought the single and got it to be played on a radiostation. And after that the snowball effect began... More and more stations started playin it

I have a feeling that Roxette is more famous outside of Sweden than in Sweden, mostly because both Per and Marie were huge stars in Sweden before Roxette, Per with his band Gyllene Tider and Marie for her solo work. Don't get me wrong Roxette was huge in Sweden too, but their Swedish stuff is imprinted itself into the soul of Swedish people in a way Roxette never did. I highly recommend Gylle Tider - "Sommartider" ((Still played every summer in Sweden) and Marie Fredriksson - Sparvöga. (Played on many funerals, especially if it's child that has died)

"Listen to you heart" was also massive from what I remember. Tbh, from what I remember of the 90s, Roxette was not that far behind compare to ABBA in Canada. ABBA had so many big hits, but Roxette was huge on the radio too. I don't think I've ever heard a song from when they were not part of Roxette so I'll see what we can react to. Yes, Per Gessle was/is the singer of Gyllene Tider (translates: Golden Times). His first band. And one of THE most legendary bands in Sweden. Many of their songs live rentfree in every Swede. Here is one video of one of the lives of their GT25, celebrating the bands 25th birthday. They did multiple gigs in Gothenburgh, only Bruce Springsteen have drawn a bigger crowd. In my opinion Marie's best solo album is Den Ständiga Resan(and she wrote a song with the same title). Her music in Swedish was so different from Roxette. Maybe because Marie wrote her lyrics and music in Swedish but in Roxette most of the music and lyrics were written by Per Gessle.

It is a bit of a problem, one could say, that we (in general) speak good English. Like, I was in a discussion about music export and the other person only knew of Abba. S/he didn't know that so many bands/artists that s/he had heard were Swedish. Sometime in the 90ies Sweden exported more music than any other country. That includes songs written for eg Backstreet boys, Taylor Swift, Guns 'n Roses etc, but still quite remarcable

It's because the 90s still had the radio, not the internet and YT who came early 2000s. So Roxette on Canadian radio was in English so most people didn't know they were from Sweden.

Roxette wanted to be released in germany, they said its a bad time for us now. But mabey if you write a fun christmas song, Per wrote this song "christmas - for the broken hearted". they hated it, worst song ever. In sweden it was a huge HIT!!

Did you know that this melody was originally intended as a Christmas carol? RIP Marie cancer took you way to early. Sweden is kind of small in a sense. You know 7 order of contact you can get to any one on earth. My Aunt baby sat Marie Fredriksson when she was a small child, she also baby sat a other girl that turn out to be come a singer 2 decade later, she was not quite as famous (i be darned, cant remember here name, well it was Jill Johansen, turned out there was just one Slagervinnare from that town she lives in) My Sister know several members of Gyllende tider (But to my knowlage she never meet per gessle, and she would make sure i knwo if she did) as well as knowing the Mother to Bass hunter, a artist in the Swedish top 100 list. Where i live Metall singer Anette Olzon is from, while she moved away prior to me moving here, despite popular belief, former Swedish priminister Göran person, is not from this town
