In this video i ran into engine problems and show you how i overcame this bump on the road. Not bad! My only grudge is i would have put fresh engine oil around the o-rings on the ipr valve to help seal them and protect them during installation. Other than that it was a very visually descriptive video and accurate.

Great point, the o rings definitely need lubing before reinstalling. I usually do it to my oil filters but totally forgot to mention it on this application. Thanks for the tip.

Sell trucks dirt cheap and charge astronomical amounts for the replacement parts. Its like buying a new printer, buy for cheap but replacement cartridges are double the cost LOL

Excellent video! It's great to see you as an owner operator figuring this engine out. You're saving yourself a ton of cash. I have been in the same situation as you since our fleet has ten DT MaxxForces and eight MaxxForce 7 diesels years 2010 - 2013. You can full field the IPR harness meaning full battery voltage (no more than 30 seconds) to open 100% for testing. To check for leakage at the high pressure manifold disconnect main hose from high pressure pump, adapt fittings and apply shop air usually 120 psi to the manifold. Any leakage requires seal replacement as you did in your video. It's a big job pulling that manifold! FYI the engine brake also runs off of the high pressure oil system. We've also replaced the injector wiring harness (integral with the valve cover gasket) and injection pressure sensor but which usually comes up as a stand alone engine code. Injection pressure needs to be 800 psi to start and under full load reaches over 4,000 psi so seals need to hold for power and normal operation of the injectors.

I don’t know about the MaxxForce high pressure oil pumps but the earlier dt466e it was only a few hundred more to get a hpop with a icp regulator valve installed in it. Which can be more cost effective in your situation because if the injectors are not still leaking around the orings then you need to get a hpop now spending a lot more then you could have. There were issues with the connectors on the harness that plugged into the icpr in the earlier dt466. These problems may have been corrected in the MaxxForce though. If you have time on your hands you can remove the valve cover and I believe unplugging the icp sensor will put the pump into full pressure then watch the orings at the injectors for leaks while running. Also the MaxxForce is very sensitive to battery voltage. So a weak battery, while still being able to crank the engine will drop voltage and the ecm will turn off and not start All while still cranking.

What code did you get. My looks have same problem. Just very low powwr but sometimes very long crsnk. But only sometimes crack right up sometimes tskes longer.. I got code spn164fmi 1 sometimes

Yea that code seems familiar. Yea sometimes long crank was an issue if i remember correctly and it got worse with time. It turns out it was the o- rings that are located on the high pressure oil rail.

Thanks for posting your videos i truly appreciate it . I have a 2011 international 4300 maxforce 10i i got my motor rebuild i replaced the ipr sensor icp sensor all the sensors for the turbos replace the 2 turbos new injectors all 6 new o-rings new filters i got everything new. In the morning it's a tarts with no problem. But after I drive it for like 15 minutes. If I turn it off and won't start i have to wait for like 40 minutes or turn the key on and off for like 10 times and to get it started i keep getting the code spn164 fmi18 I also get code fmi789 fmi2 I took it to the international dealer to service and now they telling me that I need all 6 injectors and the o-rings but I just bought them about 7 months. What should I do?

Hi, did you say you replaced all your injectors already? Don't replace the injectors again if you did 6 months ago. Replace the high pressure oil rail O rings and pressure sensor only. The reason you have to wait for engine to cool off is because the oil gets thicker as it drops temperature, that allows for enough oil not to escape from the oil rail through the torn O rings.

I have one account with over 100 vehicles I maintain, about 30 of them are the Maxxforce (maxipads) I absolutely hate them, but have gotten to know them quite well, unfortunately!

I have a 2012 prostar maxxforce. I have loss of power upon initial acceleration and when loaded uphill. My friend wants to sell this truck to me for $13,000 plus $2000 to fix it up with some type of valve replacement. Should i buy this truck as a starter truck because im new. Also if not a good idea do you think it is feasible to replace the maxxforce with a used cummins? Any thoughts is very much appreciated.

I think I'm having the same problem loaded or unloaded I lose power up hills. What exactly is a little bit of power? Because I can go from 10 speed and drop to gear number 6 or 5 on an up hill

In the highway i would drop to gear 8 with little to no cargo. It looks like yours is losing even more power, it all depends on the load and steepness of the hill.

@@thetransporterboss I bought my 2013 for 7k im at 650k miles put 100k miles on it no issues except for this . Its just aggravating. I hate going on a 60mph zone and doing 45mph. But once I get momentum there's no stopping

Hi, i have a 2009 International workstar. Truck starts excelent when cold but will NOT restart when hot. It also has a slight miss which at idle is noticable.

Those are most likely the O- rings on your oil rail. When the oil is cold thick, it starts easy since the o rings retain the oil easier in the oil rail. The opposite occurs when the oil is hot and thinner. If you crank then engine for 30+ seconds when engine hot and then it starts, that’s how you know it’s time to replace the O rings on the high pressure oil rail.

You could get the IPR socket for around 10 bucks off eBay In the USA 🇺🇸

Yes you're right. I found some open side sockets for cheap. The problem would be to ship it up to Canada and pay the import taxes etc and then all of the sudden its $100 😫

Nice video I have the same issue loosing power up hills do you this this can also apply for a maxxforce dt 9/10 year 2013 ?? I replaced the oil rail seals and icp sensor but still loosing power

You have to get the dashboard codes and it will tell you more as to what is happening. I will eventually make a video on how to read codes right from your dashboard.

These engines are a bankruptcy waiting to happen. I almost lost everything because of one of the max force 13 liter engines in a 2012 prostar I bought new. Warning please run away from this engine

I just bought a truck with that engine. It has a check engine light and looses power on hills as well. I will be purchasing the IPR valve and replacing as well. Thanks man.

You will have to replace the O-rings on the oil rail eventually. If the check engine light persists, try changing the pigtail connector. Very common problem is the actual connection.

@@Pearidgemafia My expectations were a little to high. First of all its an 11 liter and I have it coupled to a 1998 Hilbuilt end dump trailer (11-14,000lbs unloaded), which in my opinion the truck is not built for what I need it for. I'm not gonna bash International at all hell everything I own work wise is international. This day cab has just shy of 400,000 miles, it was a fleet truck for performance food group. Probably coupled to a 20 foot refer van all its life, which is probably the best application for it. I'm gonna baby sit it and put a nice price tag on it and use the funds to purchase a straight ten wheel dump truck.

The Maxxforce 7 that you have does not have an IPR valve. You have a high pressure fuel pump/ common rail fuel system which does not require ipr. Instead your pump uses a fuel volume control and fuel pressure control valves. Hope this helps.

Good question, if you're asking because you're searching for a truck to buy, please avoid this engine. I have more footage to upload. I was working on it on it often like once every two months and it only had 200,000 miles or so.

@@bigsean131 I'm not sure if you're saying this as a joke or not, but if you're serious, please please please avoid this engine. It will cause you down time and money. Buy a more expensive truck with a quarter million miles or less with a more reputable engine.

From brand new i would't even give it 60,000 miles until a major problem starts. The engines are no good, be aware before you buy.

​@@thetransporterboss thanks for pointing that out. i have a 2012 international prostar Maxxforce 13 right now experiencing loss of power as well. mechanic changed egr valve and reconnected a dislodged turbo. So both are working just fine now still got the power loss on launch and uphill.

Is the maxxforce the same as DT466 engine?

No this engine is a Maxxforce with EGR. The original DT466 was the best medium duty diesel ever... in my opinion ( No disrespect to the Cummins B). If you see one grab it even it needs an overhaul (inframe would be cheaper than a couple of emission parts for the MaxxForce). In later years the DT went electronic (DT466E) with hydraulic injection HEUI like Maxxforce but a lot more reliable.

@@MechanicsHubdotCom I thinks most of the newer internatinal trucks 2010+ come with the mxxxforce engine, in newer models 2015+ they switch to cummins engine, from what I've heard it is more reliable.

@@izh6421 any IC buses 2013 will be Maxxforce. I would advise you look for a Cummins ISB. It might be newer or you could consider Thomas buses who started using Cummins years before 2013. Don't choose MaxxForce ....too many problems.

ICP sensor on the fuel rail. Thatll cause you to have low pressure if the o-ring is bad or sensor has failed. Try that. Be careful with your gasket under the valve cover as some models have the harness for the Injectors integrated to it.

Good question, not sure but honestly I doubt it. It’s a sensor that detects pressure, i doubt it would get damaged but I could be wrong.
