God your explanations are on point, easy to understand the more complex areas which is rare. The humour just adds that bit more “flavour”. I’ve been into diesels for 30 plus years and you have explained all my years of knowledge into a tiny window of time…congratulations.

Thanks for watching. Yeah, very few people actually understand what an EGR system actually does, they just know that they don't want it. If you're going to delete it, you best adjust the tuning to account for it, or you can definitely burn one down. 👍

@freedomworx even 80hp GM 2.5 "iron duke/tech 4" will melt a piston if the EGR is deleted . You have to be using it JUST RIGHT to get the 80hp to get hot enough But it can happen . . If the EGR is designed well (aka, doesn't fill the intake with soot, the pipe itself doesnt plug, etc etc)..... I'm keeping it

It’s hardly noticeable in diesel engines they have so much heat sink mass compared to gas engines. It’s truly pretty much a nox burner on a diesel. Most of the time u notice them melting is cuz the tuners (which is why u notice after tamper) go crazy on timing tryna get em responsive and completely forget these are diiiirectttt injection lol there’s hardly any dwell and we have a pilot shot to take up all dwell. Boost is response and timing is head gasket and valve seat popper, not the other way around like majority thinks. It’s all about cylinder pressures n egt on the danger side and boost and air density on the fun side. Gale really explains it best n simply. I started referring ppl to his videos so I don’t have to waste time convincing n can get back to work

Though I'd throw this out there, the oil squirters are one of the main reasons the pistons don't melt. I have a 3406e 2ws that was inframed by the owner, they removed piston/rods without removing the oil squirters, it went 16k miles and I bought it. 2nd time I pulled a trailer at 925 post turbo temp it melted #2. They were bent just enough the piston wasn't cooled properly, but compared to the new squirters they looked identical except for light scratches.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 10 ай бұрын
Yep. That's what I was referring to when I said the heat is lost to the oil. Are those a 2 piece or 1 piece piston? Does the oil shoot into a hole in the bottom of the piston on those?
@nicoletingey4995
@nicoletingey4995 10 ай бұрын
@freedomworx they are 2 piece piston, the squirters have 2 bent pipes and they have it figured out so they cover the bottom of the piston on each side when it's at the highest Temps. I really couldn't tell a difference on the angles new to the old scratched ones but it worked, it's set at 550 ish and it put all my new drivers in it. It won't pull as hard as some of my 700 hp cats but it an awesome engine. I have actually had older drivers mock me for running manifold ( pre turbo) and post turbo k type senders in an autometer dual input pyro. But the factory, and other options are so slow and wildly inaccurate. I just prefer to know exactly what my right foot is doing so I install the dual pyros in all my big trucks and just pre turbo in pickups. By the way, what shell is your laser pointer. Good job on the video by the way.

@freedomworx

It's interesting that gas guys think diesel is complex and diesel gas think gas is complex. To me, the only complex thing about diesels is managing emissions. Everything else is pretty straight forward. 👍
@alouisschafer7212
@alouisschafer7212 8 ай бұрын
@@freedomworx Diesels are so simple to me. You need fuel and air. In diesels there is no such thing as needing to run within an Air Fuel Ratio window. The only rule really is: The leaner a diesel runs the better. Less emissions, more efficiency. More air = more good. More fuel but not more air = eww rolling coal like a mf and dogshit fuel economy paired with high EGTs. More air makes the diesel happy aka spooly boi go brrr.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 8 ай бұрын
@alouisschafer7212 yep. They are simple. The only hard part about diesel tuning is making good power and economy while keeping emissions in check.

there's a lot of thermal dynamic going on, if you play paintball, you see it all the time when you fill your tank vs shooting. Fill tank = compression stroke, spending tank pressure = power stroke, when gas escapes, or the space becomes less dense, there's less energy thus cooler temps. Just a different way of looking at it and relating.

Yes, timing definitely has an effect. Retarding the timing will increase EGT and turbine drive pressure.Retarding timing is a strategy to spool turbos faster while staging. Most common rails are using multiple injection events now, so timing is a little weird. You spread the injection over a longer period of time to decrease peak cylinder temp and pressure, but maintain average cylinder temp or pressure. Good question

6:00 and this is why you can melt pistons if your engine leans WAY out...... . the combustion temp gets a LOT higher.... and despite only being in their for 25% of the strokes (and really, its more like 18-20%, due to valve overlap, expansion, ETC) to combat this... modern engines, even gas engines, use "piston squirters"....... they shoot oil on the bottom of the piston

Keeping the engine revved up towing equals more CFM coming out of the turbo equals more cooling of the engine and combustion chamber. Bigger intercooler after cooler water methanol injection

That’s one way to look at it. Horsepower equals heat. To make the same amount of heat (watts) with fewer RPM, you have to make more heat per engine cycle. Meaning more cylinder and egt’s.

I do a lot of diesel calibration work, I disagree with a lot of your points. Low back pressure will reduce EGTs. DPF being the main contributor to back pressure but SCRs can also add a bit. A prototype Euro 7 diesel can see 800mBar (11.6 PSI) of back pressure at full load, you become limited on pre-turbo temps (absolute limit 830°C 1526°F). A straight pipe would get maybe 650°C or 1200°F. EGR blanking is a little complicated. For reducing EGTs you have. Higher air mass, lower air intake temperatures & NOx formation is endothermic. For higher EGTs you have, higher thermal capacity CO2 & water does not cool combustion & more complete combustion. However generally speaking blanking EGR usually always reduces EGT. Generally speaking EGR blanking & DPF removal will reduce EGTs, reduce fuel consumption and also increase engine oil life due to less acidic byproducts and soot formation. This is why VW disabled EGR. Of course there is the moral aspect of doing this PM & NOx can cause cancer and respiratory conditions. For more information dieselnet.com is very useful.

@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 ай бұрын
Smoke and EGTs generally go hand in hand. More fuel equals more heat (EGT), but it also means more smoke, because with more fuel in the cylinder, you are less likely to get a complete burn of all the fuel.

Water meth injection can lower EGT by up to 150 deg F as well. High altitude makes for thin air and makes your turbo work harder for the same flow (more RPM) which then makes it less efficient and makes more heat. So more intake charge temp, less air, more EGT. To fight this on my 6.7 powerstroke I both put a larger turbo on it (non VGT aurora 4000 kit from ATS) and retuned the transmission shift points to never go below 1500 rpm, and added water meth injection (custom setup made from snow performance pump with a 7 and 10 gpm nozzles and a torqbyte controller, the 7 gpm nozzles duty cycle is based off throttle position and RPM, and the 10 gpm is based off of EGT and RPM). This lets me set the cruse control to 85 mph going over the continental divide while towing 8000 lbs (behind said 8000 lbs truck) to never get over 1350 deg F EGT.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 16 күн бұрын
I actually had a segment in the video related to water/meth. But I had to cut it out to reduce the length of the video. But yes, it's certainly effective at reducing EGTs.👍

Suggestion to keep the turbo last as long as the engine: Install a separat independent oil system for the turbo with an electric pump & water/oil heat exchanger. Pump start with ignition on & only allow the starter to run when oil pressure is up. & the oil pump will continue to run after ignition is switched off until a set minimum time delay & the oil temperature is below a a set value.

Very interesting stuff to learn. I got a question. So will reducing the intake temperature, let’s say with a big heat exchanger after the turbo compresses the air, help lower the exhaust temps? If so is it significant?

Sorry for not waiting till the end but that’s where my mind took me as it was processing the info you were giving me. I’m assuming adding a bigger intercooler also helps reduce the EGTs in say a 3.5 Ecoboost. But, but in that case, are EGTs a problem?
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 10 ай бұрын
@@bvbhu3dg gasoline engines actually have higher EGTs than diesel engines. But as long as the AFR is controlled, it’ll be fine. If the engine is stock, there is no reason to worry about it. Have you seen the Eco-Boost torture test narrated by Mike Rowe? They had that truck maxed out on towing capacity and ran it around Daytona full throttle for 24 hours 😂

I think something that confuses a lot of people it's that they conflate heat and temperature. You have to keep in mind that these are completely separate entities. For instance a cigarette Burns at a very hot temperature but contains very little heat. On the other hand, a bathtub at 100° contains a good bit of heat but very low temperature compared to that cigarette.

I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. Never have wanted to build a motor more. I’ve been wanting to be able to download and try tunes on my Lbz, previous owner has a dsp5 switch on it. Don’t know much about tuning but I’d like to be able to screw around with it. Do you have any helpful information??
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 ай бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the channel. If you already have a DSP5 switch, that’s a start. You’ll have to work with someone like duramaxtuner.com and order an EFILive Autocal device to interface with your ECU. Generally the tuner will preload their custom tunes onto the Autocal and ship it to you. Then you just plug it in and load the tunes into your truck. Once you own the Autocal, you can use it to load anyone’s EFILive tunes i to your truck. They can just email them to you, you load them into the Autocal, and use the Autocal to load them into your truck. duramaxtuner.com/vehicle-type/switch-on-the-fly-tune-incl-efi-live-spade-lbz-2006-2007.html

@freedomworx

@nicjgoss7069 all the tunes are the same format, and you can save them all on your computer. So you can choose any 5, from anyone you want, to go in those 5 places. Your DSP5 could have 5 tunes from 5 different people in it at the same time.

what's better for the engine under extreme load and fueling? I've only watched the first 6mins of this video, so if it's answered later please feel free to say "watch the damn video". 1. higher rpm / lower gearing, with slightly lower boost and EGTs 2. lower rpm, taller gearing, but slightly higher boost and EGTs I'm guessing there's a trade off between options 1 and 2 due to the 'recovery' time between combustion cycles being reduced with higher rpms. is this true? i usually try to be a option 1 driver, as i've always focused on EGT and lowering strain from over-gearing. But am i wrong? Thanks, and excellent video too!
