I feel like none of the Rhodes here in Oregon USA have any fragrance. Beautiful shrubs that really anchor the garden, even through the winter where we have so many trees and shrubs that lose their leaves. Your garden, as always, absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you for your great comments. Rhododendrons aren't typically scented so grab the ones that are! Thanks for watching and have a great Friday.

So beautiful 🤩 and peaceful. I love watching Catsky taking a leisure stroll, making an appearance here and there.

Well, you know, Catsky believes it is HER garden. She kindly allows me to tend it when I behave 😂 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

I can see how the gorse prickles that drop can be annoying but on the plus side gorse flowers have a great coconut scent especially during their peak flowering time in April! I have seen quite a few rhododendrons on recent walks I have gone on and the light pink rhododendrons do seem to be liked best by the bees I notice. Virginia Richards is probably my favourite of your three top rhododendrons, Its a pity the tree peony beside it didn't have more flowers out to go with it.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
I must agree about the scent of gorse. It is fabulous. My husband collects the flowers (not from the bush you saw in the video but from those around us) and makes ice cream with them. You have never tasted anthing so divine. Yes, the tree peony beside 'Virginia Richards' is disappointing this year. It usually puts on such a good show. Thanks for watching and sharing and hoping you have a great day.

Thanks for visiting. There are tropical rhododendrons, by the way, ones we would have to grow in a greenhouse here. Happy growing.

Amazing! Literally just completed Rhododendrun Week KZbin tour of Kilmacarragh! And there you were! So beautiful. My parents had one in their garden. The laughing seagulls send their greeting from the other side of the Atlantic.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, Kilmacurragh has an amazing rhodo collection, with that walkway designed for two Victorian ladies in full skirts to pass through side by side. Thanks for watching and happy growing.

There is a huge park close to me that has quite a collection of rhododendrons. I haunt this park this time of year to catch all the Rhodos in bloom. This is my favourite park as it runs along the lake. Who could ask for more, rhodos along the lake?

Isn't it wonderful that you have that beautiful place so close at hand. I would be lapping up those blooms too. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Hallo. Great video, again (call me a fan! :D ). - You were talking about the age of your garden (20 years, as I remember); Idea: I would find it very interesting to see old footage of the beginnings of your garden. Maybe a developement. I am finally starting my own little garden, and you are always a source of inspiration... Would be nice to see how you started.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
Dear Karl. I really wish I had taken footage of the garden when we started out. However, the garden came gradually and never in big swoops so I never thought to take photos. The only ones I have are photos of my children with the garden as backdrop, usually bare grass. When we bought this house and garden 20 years ago the garden was laid to grass (except for the bit at the back where we had to sow the grass). The only plants were the native hedge at the front and back (incorporating that gorse bush you saw) and a row of trees planted on the bank between us and our neighbour. It has been a slow build.

Your rhododendron collection is beguilling! 😳.. i remember travelling to Gangtok, Sikkim in the Himalayan hills and all the valleys and cliffs were literally on fire with the native rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom. There even was a rhododendron conservatory with tons of mature specimens in there. I hope that you can visit it one day! 💚💚💚
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow. That would be a dream come true for me to see rhodos in bloom in the Himalayas. Sigh! Thank you for sharing that wonderful image and, in the meantime, I will have to make do with my own garden plants. Best wishes. Rachel

My goodness Rachel, they are all so beautiful. Wish I had smell-o-vision to get a nice whiff of how they smell! :)
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
The Lady Alice is the only scented rhodo I have. They are not usually scented except for a few in the azalea group. But it would be worth having smell-o-vision for Lady Alice alone. She is the queen. Thanks for watching and have a great day.

Yikes! I don't think I've seen a Gorse hedge so high..I don't envy you with the prickles..I have enough to contend with battling with my Mahonia prickles and Gorse are 10 times worse. I just loved seeing that wall of mature Rhododendrons, what a sight! Looking forward to seeing your in-depth video on Rhodos/Azaleas Rachel!
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
I do have a policy of not planting or growing any plants with prickles (although a few exceptions, like mahonia, have creeped in). But it seems native hedges take little account of my policies 😂 Thanks for watching and enjoy your preparation for summer.
@GrannysGarden3 жыл бұрын
Yes Mahonias are worth making the exception for but those wretched prickles go straight through normal gloves. And yes preparing for summer...... another day in a t-shirt 💪 shhhhhhh🤫

New mic?! I love rhododendron. When I lived in the Pacific Northwest area of the US, rhodos where everywhere and just looked amazing and grew to be very large specimens. Now that I live along the very hot, humid Gulf Coast, I am coming to love azaleas -- although I prefer the foliage and growth habit of rhodos over the azalea group.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
I guess very often we love what we cannot have and those rhodos in the Pacific Northwest sound amazing. There are some gorgeous rhodos native to US. I think rhodos are a great plant to grow if you have the right soil and climate because your plants will throvr. No one wants sickly looking things in their garden. Thank you for watching and sharing. By the way, I got the new mic at Christmas. I think it makes a big difference to my sound quality. What do you think?

The bumblers are having a field day in the rhodo blossoms! I noticed Catski has a healthy respect for the bees. I'm guessing she learned a lesson from a previous experience.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
Good morning, Ben. Yes, I noticed Catsky circumspection of the bees too. At least she has some sense. Thank you for watching and I hope your weather is a bit better than ours today. We have buckets of rain and wind.

Rhodies are my absolute favorite flowers. I love the hot red/pink varieties. I live in a cooler zone than you and purple PJMs are by far the most common.
@GardeningatDouentza3 жыл бұрын
I also prefer the lighter colours of rhodo. The purple one has a lot of negative associations here in Ireland where Rhododendron ponticum is invasive in the west of the country. Thanks for watching and hoping you have a great day. Rachel

"someone asked me about hardy ground orchids" that was me! Appears the pollinators are enjoying the Rhodos even more than you. And I spied a nice big peony there by the Cunningham's White. So perhaps a peony video will be in the offing....

Yes, Michael. You are definitely the 'some one' 😂 I saw you mentioned in a few other KZbinr vids, where your probing questions and deep insights have made you quite the celebrity.
