Tina, keep on using more(NOT exclusively, ofc) J-Beauty skincare. We are drowning with the amount of K-Beauty reviewers, reviewing the same stuff. I've just subscribed a month or 2 ago, have watched a lot of your videos, and now I've accumulated long list of future J-Beauty products to purchase and try. I believe there are a lot of hidden and overlooked gems in J-Beauty, and you help us, people who are not Japanese and don't live in Japan, find them. Love you, Tina!! ❤

just an fyi for everyone, retinol is preventative! yes it does have the ability to reverse skin damage, but it is also considered a preventative ingredient and i think it’s just important to point that out since some wording can trigger negative connotations in the way people think about any type of retinoid 😊
@LotusesGalaxyOcean
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
Yes, and if anyone wants to try retinol my advice is get a simple tube of adapalene gel which usually sells for ten dollars. It should be about a month’s supply. Adapalene is a relatively non irritating version of retinol and if you need more intensity you will have to get a prescription because it is the top end otc. However the concentration is clear and certain unlike some other products so you could use as little or as much as you want on your face. Just mix it into your lotion on your hand before you apply it to your face. Do not dump it into your bottle of moisturizer as that will destabilize the retinol formulation. I recommend a pea sized amount for the face or less.
@AL-pg3cu
@AL-pg3cu Жыл бұрын
@@LotusesGalaxyOcean hm depending on your skin type and tolerance this is not necessarily true. Do not use tretinoin alongside your moisturiser. It’s a very strong retinol and heavily drying. Not to mention it’s also considered to be something that helps with acne which is why you’re meant to avoid the eye areas. For this reason. I would suggest proceed your skincare as normal. With waiting 20 or so minutes after ur moisturizer has dried and then apply a pea size of tret to your face. You can ofc do the sandwich method but tret spreads along the face and you don’t not want this to get near your eyes. Now if you’re referring to adapalene im completely unsure of its usage. But all in all it’s also good to listen to your dermatologist on how to use a certain retinol
@LotusesGalaxyOcean
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
@@AL-pg3cu Of course people can have a reaction, but the reality is not everyone can afford to go to a dermatologist. Many people have to just try their best on their own. I mentioned adapalene gel for this purpose specifically because many “creams” are overpriced and it is very unnecessary for those struggling with acne who are just looking for a decent concentration retinol. They may think that they need an expensive item, which is not true. I am picturing any number of young teenagers who perhaps have no health insurance on a very tight budget. Differin is one brand that sells this if you are familiar with them.

I would say I did not really tell any difference with retinols until I was well into my 30s and used it initially to recover from poor sleep. Consistency really is key with retinol (though I definitely would not use it every single day). Eye cream, same thing. Never regularly used it until very recently and now that I am 🙀fortyish 🙀I can tell the difference in my skin. Agree 100% that prevention is best. Using sunscreen every day since my early teens has been the biggest W for my skin! Glad to see you feature more J-beauty again; looking forward to you reviewing some of your recent travel haul items! 😻

I wish I knew about this channel while I was living in Japan earlier this year. (From Dec 22 to May 23) my skin was freaking out and it’s so hard finding info about J-beauty products when the market is flooded with k-beauty. Shopping for skincare was super overwhelming. I ended up just sticking to products/brands I used before which were mainly k-beauty brands. Also I was genuinely surprised at how much K-beauty was popular in Japan. Same with Kpop, I swore I heard more kpop than jpop while out and about

I don’t think everyone needs to use a retinoid. If you’ve grown up taking care of your skin and diligently used sunscreen, then you’re probably preventing 80% of cumulative damage. However, I grew up in the U.S. before daily sunscreen was popular, and while I tried to stay out of the sun because I burn, I did get a lot of sun damage. I now have many spots of hyperpigmentation and Tretinoin has made a huge difference in my skin. Along with good sunscreen. Prevention is is much better than repair!

Retinoids are definitely not essential but they have so many benefits for skin health (not just skin aging) such as strengthening the dermis and increasing skin cell turnover, thereby helping with barrier function, exfoliation and hyperpigmentation as well, not just wrinkles. Unless you have immediate skin concerns you won’t notice the benefits of it if you start using it when you’re young until possibly decades later so you’re really playing the long game. The other issue too is that as a pharmacist I see too many people use it incorrectly or don’t know how to start slow and titrate up and that’s where irritation and side effects occur. It is the single group of skincare ingredients that has the most robust evidence supporting its use in a variety of skin conditions (other than sunscreen which is of course always first and foremost!) so I think it’s important for people to have accurate information to be able to make informed decisions about using it 😊

Also on the retinol/other vit a derivatives - if i recall correctly it can be used preventatively (esp tretinoin) and it's so popular simply becuse there's so much empirical evidence for it. But even then like, once you reach a certain point, skincare is really just for fun and nobody really "needs" any anti-aging products in the first place. I think us women are made to be really insecure about every single wrinkle and stressed into using every single "anti-aging" strategy ever and it's like - if you're not enjoying it what's the point? Skin cancer obviously matters, but everything else is just for cosmetic purposes and the vibes. Do what u like girl

Lovely picks, and I need to try that rovectin serum! I do agree that retinol isnt for everyone as well, but you reported amazing results with the vita a eye cream and retinol is a form of vitamin a, probably more potent than the retinyl palmitate and bakuchiol in that product. maybe try it in those areas if you can tolerate it and see what results you get over time?

I thought I was the only one who thinks retinol is a bit overrated. I’ve tried so many different types of retinol and I don’t think they are doing anything at all. But like you said, if we have been taking care of our skin from the start, we probably don’t need retinol.

I use adapalene, the hardcore stuff. It’s available over the counter in the US and $15 when on sale so it’s way cheaper than a lot of retinols. It’s great for keeping my acne away and my skin is nice and glowy. I just never saw the point in using the weak stuff (retinols) when my skin isn’t that sensitive
@hurrstardlikemustard
@hurrstardlikemustard Жыл бұрын
Retinols being overrated, sure is aggreable, since retinols are mostly cosmetics or cosmeceutical products that arent required to be proven nor studied before its marketed to have Pharmaceutical 'claims' even when the product doesnt exactly does any of it claims as compared to prescription level retinoids (Tretinoin, Adapalene, Tazarotene, etc.). It would be best to save your money from buying retinols if you dont exactly need them (as you already take care of your skin), but prescription retinoids on the other hand hosts a whole another level of effects compared to ANY OTC products if well tolerated and used appropriately and consistently.
@nickylapiel2675
@nickylapiel2675 Жыл бұрын
@@hurrstardlikemustard Agree. Plus if there is minimal fine lines, photoaging or acne, using retinoids would yield little evidence of its use (except decades after when you look 10 yrs younger than all your peers).
@ayameisastar
@ayameisastar Жыл бұрын
@@hurrstardlikemustard Tretinoin and Adapelene also have peer reviewed studies to prove their effectiveness and years of data by the FDA and other countries' regulatory bodies to show that they work. There are comparatively few studies that show retinols work and because they're not regulated, those studies only show that the specific product works and doesn't mean all retinols in all products work.

Retinol 0.1% is really low concentration, so not surprising that it does not give skin irritation, but at the same time it is too low that I'm not sure if it gives any antiaging benefits. We have over the counter 0.3 retinol products, then 0.5, then highest 1%. So 0.1 is like really low. When you are in your late 20s or early 30s, you might not feel you need it, but when you reach mid 30s, suddenly you will feel you need it :)
@TinaTanakaHarris

@sererev
@sererev Жыл бұрын
Effectiveness depends on overall product formulation as well as % of active ingredient. 0.1% is not that low actually, the Cerave retinol serum is the same. I'm currently using the Innisfree cica retinol serum which has only 0.015% retinol but my acne has gone through the purging and clearing up process just the same.

Retinol has been really helpful for my cystic acne! But unless you have persistent acne (which you don't), I doubt you'd see visible results with it. Don't feel obliged to review products and ingredients which don't make sense for you to use by the way, as much as we all trust and value your opinion there's plenty of other sources of information!
