An important complicating factor for Sunak are the Council Elections in May. A General Election on the same day could be helpful for some Tory MPs; on the other hand, without a General Election, a disastrous set of local elections would be difficult for Sunak and any decision on a General Election look like a panic response.

A General Election on the same day as Council elections will probably help Tory councillors with getting re-elected but it probably won't help Tory MPs much, because lots of Tory voters who normally only vote in the general election would also be voting in the Council elections, but the same doesnt apply vice- versa.

@@goych Whatever you think of Sunak's character, there's a chance that he might cushion the blow slightly if he waits it out, however slim, and it's in both his and the party's best interest to at least close the gap between themselves and Labour before the next election. There are so many reasons why a later/latest possible election wont be called. One of them is that there are still many Tories in the party (not just MP's) who have to face the inevitable defeat and survive to become electable again in the near future. Sunak might be the one who makes the decision, but those within the entire party - especially those that have to keep the party propped-up once he runs off to America - will be pressuring him to call one with the threat of a leadership election and being forced to step down so that a new leader can call one for a 'fresh mandate'.

I also heard that from the News Agents Podcast that the UK may not be able to have an election in November for security reasons. Since computer security has risen as a threat that hasn't been an election in the Five Eyes Security Network countries (USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada) at the same time. The US has an election in November and its is obviously going to be very contentious. There are some saying in security circles that to help prevent national security risks, best not to have at the same time as the US, as security systems will already be stretched.

@jonathanodude6660
@jonathanodude6660 Жыл бұрын
@@smellslikethinice1107 I would call myself a globe trotter at this point, and that is my experience with democracy. We can choose to have an unchanging leader or a leader that has a set term. There are basically no other alternatives. Votes are polls and barometers of how people are feeling. Voting every year or more would be untenable in terms of costs and the administrative headache of changing leaders every year as well as the apathy in the population. The system isn’t terrible, it’s the best we’ve got. Democracies have flaws, but this is not a flaw, it’s a practical limit. I still have my British passport but I only vote in Australia and our elections are every 3 years with very little variation on when they’re called (a few months or so). A lot of people still feel like it’s too often (we have mandatory voting). I kinda agree. Kinda. Our politicians like to rush everything through in the first couple months US-style but not because they’re losing the house in 2 years, but because they could be losing the job in 3. There is no use resisting the best we’ve got. You should focus on resisting FPTP imo. We don’t have that here and it means the majority are happy with the result basically every time. We have STV and RCV and we have PR: we rank the parties by how much we want them in government, and our votes go to the first one we picked. If no party wins a majority, the party with the least votes are eliminated and their first choice voters votes are redistributed to the second choices, if no one wins a majority again, The party with the least votes are eliminated again redistributing first and second choice votes and that process continues until there are only 2 parties left, at which point one of them must win a majority from the third place party, and the outcome is by definition the majority preferred outcome, since the last 2 choices are decided on how many people ranked one party over the other, with other parties becoming irrelevant at that point. This is tied to constituencies. Then we have a senate/ upper chamber which is based on PR. After voting every party gets a division of the senate proportional to their vote share across the entire country, not based on any constituency. Direct democracy almost. With these two systems I think our democracy is the strongest in the world and is immune to the polarisation of the American system and the frequent coalition collapse of European systems. Right wing progressive Independents had a very strong showing last election taking power from our right wing conservative party in the house and the extreme left wing greens are well represented in the senate which means the centre left government must pay attention to both the right wing moderates and the left wing extremists to govern effectively, making them the most appealing government we’ve had in a while for most people. I don’t see that happening in the UK anytime soon.

Everyone is making these predictions with only a single aim in consideration. This is that the election will be held in order to maximize the number of seats the governing party will win. However, there is another aim at play here, which is the desire for the current MPs to stay in their jobs for as long as possible. Most people, when they sign up to a fixed-term work contract, want to serve that contract to the full unless resigning early makes it more likely for them to find a new job. Given that for a large number of current Tory MPs, an earlier election does NOT boost their chances of retaining their seats, surely there is an incentive to serve out their terms to the full. Sunak represents his MPs, more or less exclusively (he certainly does not represent his party's membership), so he must take this into account and this means that Nov is probably more likely than May unless the party is doing exceptionally well close to May.

The monarch always accepting the request of the govermetshows how little checks and balances there are against the executive. The head if state needs a democratic mandate so they can actually deny requests from the PM as necessary. For example if when the PM wants to prorogue parliament early in 2019.

May would be the realistic and the best option for the Tories, considering what will follow right after that month. But it seems Sunak doesn't want that, and would much prefer to hold on to the bitter end. November would be suicide for national security reasons (US Presidential elections) and I can see the moderate Tories (or whatever is left of them) getting very vocal over that. Should he choose Jan 2025, and the Tories will be very lucky if they don't fall below 100 seats, let alone 150.

June 27th 2024 would be the best time to call a election. Because people start to go on holiday in July till September. June 27 2024 would be the best idea . Margaret Thatcher always used to carry elections in june.. late June would be ok for me . June 27. Parliament can dissolved four weeks before z28th of may parliament can be dissolved. The reason why I’m saying late June also is because so it can’t conflict with local government elections. June 27 2024 . Holding back till November would be not a good idea. Because it’s dark and wet . Like it has been this month.

It should be possible for parliament to vote for dissolution. Probably would have to be one of them "two thirds needs to be in favour" things but it makes no sense to let the election be called by the person who could be the worst off from calling one
@JanSenCheng

It is. A vote of no confidence from parliament dissolves the current legislature and if no new government can be formed (which is likely the case if a confidence vote is being called), then a general election in automatically triggered. The problem is that the Tories currently control more than 50% of the seats in parliament, and many Tory MPs are going to lose their seats in a general election, so they're never going to vote against Sunak's government. What we need is a proportional voting system so politics is no longer dominated by just 2 major parties. Look at the German or Dutch system, every single election results in loads of parties with seats in power, so every election requires a coalition to form a government, and coalitions are much easier to bring down with a confidence vote if and when the Prime Minister and his party start showing that they're incapable of leading. Unfortunately, Labour's historically been very fence-sitty on the issue of voting reform, and Torylite Starmer has vocally opposed it, so even with the Tories out, we're unlikely to get voting reform unless people back smaller parties in the upcoming election.

@@JanSenChengGerman here: Our government at the moment is the least popular it has been for decades. There still is no chance for an early election for the very same reasons as in the UK. Right now, all parties from the coalition would lose heavily in an election, therefore the incentive for the incumbents is to keep the unpopular coalition going. Coalitions only end early, when one of the parties could gain a lot in an early election. I still think our electoral system is better than the UK's because you have a better choice between the parties. But be careful not to become like Italy.

That was effectively how Early Elections were meant to be able to happen under the Fixed Term Parliament Act -- the 2017 GE was called that way. But when the government wanted the 2019 GE they couldn't get the opposition votes to get to 2/3rds so they just passed a new law with a regular majority.
