This is a great reading month!! I agree about Lying Life of Adults being too long. I think this is a classic example of a publisher being too afraid to edit a very established author. I feel like this happens a lot and then we get these long ramble books, like the Goldfinch.

Yes, perhaps it is that. It just needed to be like 60 pages shorter and it would have been a much better book

For Elena Ferrante I didn't start with the Neapolitan Novels either - I'd really recommend The Days of Abandonment, I think it's my favourite standalone of hers!

Oh cool! I think I'll try her again fairly soon, maybe one to take away on our honeymoon (if we can go ahead!)

Oh you did physics for a few years, I'd never have guessed that! How cool. I remember in another video you'd said you were studying now, what are you studying? Is it literature related? Your videos are currently getting me through a very drab Thursday of working from home ☺️ and it's given me plenty of self care and reading ideas

Yeah it doesn't feed into what I do now at all! I've just finished an HR qualification (as long as I've passed the last exam!) and I'll be looking for a good master's conversion module in the new year. I'm so glad you're enjoying the content!

@@SophieIslington ahh HR is interesting, best of luck and now you'll have time to read some more :)

So many books! I've no idea how you do it, honestly. I'm with you on Indelicacy and The Employees, both of which I adored. But I also really loved Little Scratch, one of my favourite books last month.

Oh, and thanks for the review of Second Place. I've never read Rachel Cusk and am wavering.
@SophieIslington3 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure how I read so much this month either! I think Rachel Cusk is worth a shot and if you don't like her style at least you'll know? She is a very individual writer in terms of voice.

The Removed is so incredible. I also really enjoyed Milk Blood Heat. Great wrap up!

I thought Indelicacy was such a great read. I read it a few months back and I still think about it a lot. I've seen very few people talking about it, so glad you enjoyed it.

It's so good! I also haven't seen that much about it so glad to share some love.

I follow you on Goodreads and I saw you gave Indelicacy a good star rating. I picked it up from my library and I loved it. One of my favorite books thus far. Going to pick up Oak Flat next.

That's amazing, I'm really glad you enjoyed it and Oak Flat is such a joy.

The employees was also my favourite for the international booker, and maybe minor detail second. You might also want to check the employees review of KD Books, he goes deep about what the objects mean, there is just so much packed in that book!

Thank you, I'll definitely check out that review!

Would recommend Paying the Land by Joe Sacco for a layered look at the Indigenous history of the Northwest Territories (CA) and how it relates to environmental and political change. It's graphic journalism, and there are many excellent compositions. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I really enjoyed The Last House on Needless Street, I was confused for virtually all of it but thought it was great. I really want to read Gargoyles.
@SophieIslington3 жыл бұрын
It is so confusing, when I started it I did think whether I could keep going to get through to a bit where I felt I could understand it. Gargoyles I would definitely recommend.

I thought Minor Detail was tremendous and better than At Night All Blood is Black, which was also quite good. I can’t imagine how Minor Detail didn’t make the shortlist. I still have The Employees to read. I also enjoyed Milk Blood Heat, but I can only remember the title story.
@SophieIslington3 жыл бұрын
I'm sad it wasn't shortlisted too, as it really is a brilliant little book.
