London England Dec 3rd 1968, Maya Angelou sits in her hotel room, reliving her past and writing her autobiography, "I know why the caged bird sings". A book that will sell over 4 million copies and change the way we see the struggles of women, minority communities, and reinventing how autobiographies are written. Her legacy built on giving a voice to the voiceless.

RE LYNCHINGS: as mentioned 4x here She lived rich to middle class. There where 2 lynchings while she was living in the state of Arkansas & one after she left. (b.1928, moved to stamps 1931, last lynching was when she was 8, 4-29-36, she had already left stamps when she was 7). The 2 lynchings occurred 270 & 330 miles away from her, same distance from Manhattan to Va beach (~270 miles). This is at a time when 1 in 4 families had cars and no highways (till 1955) to drive them on. No internet or televisions (not popular till '39), so she heard by news paper, radio or someone called her on a lan line. This is a gross exaggeration to say she's hiding ppl daily in her grandmom's basement from all the "lynchings".
