Even though you're not a fan of UV mapping, and rarely anyone is, maybe if you try automatic mapping the results would be better? I know that drawing in Maya becomes better if you do the automatic mapping. Even though your maps are all over the place if you look at them in the editor.

you're right, automatic mapping might have done a good job with the house. but i wanted to stick to the basic import/export process and not distract folks with UV mapping.
