In this project based Maya Retopology Tutorial for Beginners, I walk you thru step by step on how to retopologize a creature's head using live surfaces and quad draw. I provide the high poly sculpt for those who wish to follow along.

Is it okay to first create a low poly model(with topology), then sculpt on it to make it high poly .Then use high poly sculpt's maps on the low poly model version for that sculpted details ? Will it work or not 🤔

Hey man, awesome vid! Much appreciated how clear you are with your instructions. I got a couple questions, but I'm not sure if you read over comments on older vids, but here goes: Did you set your teeth in a Referance Layer? You bring them back somehow, I'm not sure what you do (hotkey?), since they are not hidden in the outliner. Is this a model for a game? It seems a bit high in polys for a game, but I might be wrong... also there might be some baking involved later on. I can't see any vids on baking model for games, so I'm not sure if you mainly do model work for movies/animations and so on. Any chance we could get a basic tutorial on baking normals onto a lower poly model in the future? Cheers dude!

1. I hit "H" on the teeth to hide and unhide. 2. The model I would say is closer to film resolution, but games are getting higher and higher in polycount. In a couple of years there won't be much difference. For personal work that's not going in an engine, I don't see much point in skimping on the polycount 3. I will probably do a baking video in the future.

So when you are done with the retopology you put a normal map of the highpoly on the lowpoly so it looks like a highpoly right? I hope thats right... would you mind creating a tutorial how to actually create normal maps in maya? As a student I just can't afford zBrush and a lots of Adobe products are draining my wallet already.

Any tips on baking? If it's more of a hard surface item would it be easier to use primitive shapes and try to make it fit?

Super useful, thanks! When I have drawn quite big faces (like at @14:45) and i now split them up by adding loops via "ctrl + middle-mouse", the new vertices (of that new loops) arent conform to the mesh, they are basically inside of the mesh so i can't "operate" with them in quad draw... i than have to switch the to "vertex" and pull those vertices out! Did you ever found a solution to this?

Is your sculpt set to "live". Make sure you are splitting you mesh using Quad Draw.

Yup you could, or take into Zbrush and re-project details onto mesh and keep refining.
