Maya: Soft Modification and Normal Tools

I hope someone still reads this even though this tutorial is 2018. My soft selection tool only slides. It won't do any of those deformation???? whether I try the move tool or scale tool, anything I click on it shows "slide" and doesn't do anything on move stuff within the shape itself. Not in, nor out, just within ie sphere, grid etc. Help please.
