Maya Tools - Insert Edge Loop vs. Offset Edge Loop vs. Multi-Cut

I'm hoping you can help me with solving an issue I'm having that I cannot seem to find the answer to. I'm a beginner and have some knowledge of Maya and I've been home studying Maya in preparation for a course I'm taking in April. I finished a book called "Autodesk Maya 2019 Basics Guide" by Kelly Murdock. In one of the exercises, he wants the reader to insert an edge loop around the bottom and sides of a nose that he's already modeled. It is a working file that comes with the book. His instructions are to turn off auto-complete on the tool, then select several horizontal edges on the right side of the nose, then vertical edges under the nose, then horizontal edges along the left side of the nose. The results are supposed to create a U-shaped edge loop. I've tried repeatedly to replicate what he's done by following his instructions but it never works. Any ideas?

to be honest, i've never used the tool with auto complete turned off - but i just checked it out and that's my thing i learned for the day :P unfortunately without seeing the actual model or what you personally are selecting while working, it's pretty hard to diagnose the problem. you could always try the multicut tool instead though

I have a problem when I'm inserting an edge loop;; It shows yellow color wireframe and it turns into a rainbow wireframe and instead of the cut that I can adjust turns into polyspiltring;;;

Areyou Clare I’m not sure I’ve seen that happen before, but it sounds like it could perhaps be soft select. Try hitting B on your keyboard or go into the selection tool settings and seeing if it’s turned on.

Please...oh please...tell me how you get out of the tool. I've been saving and restarting Maya.

Try selecting any other tool from the side bar/menue. I usually just grab the select tool or something simple.

@@meilovecakes2581 that's normally what i do. sometimes the Q doesn't get me out of the insert edge loop tool for some reason though. maya's weird
