As a dad whose kids went from lots of hugs, holding hands, play fighting etc to teens that don't want to be touched at all I can tell you it feels bad man. Nothing you can do about it you just have to suck it up but it makes me feel like I lost a big part of my family life. Its especially weird that girls behave like that as much as boys, so its not toxic masculinity.

It's a stage in sexual development, the parent or teen or both become very aware of the differences between male and female bodies at that age and sort of become hyperconscious of themselves in an effort to NOT relate sexually to their opposite-sex family member. Of course when that happens its impossible to relate normally because as soon as that happens you start wondering "where do i put my arms, how do i normally smile" etc. Think of any sitcom character told to "just act natural", its a more realistic version of that. So the result is that the parent, the child, or both, often pull away. Depending on the emotional literacy of the parent they might be aggressive or surly about it, while the teen definitely will be. It's a complicated time and feelings get hurt because the other person doesn't know what's going on. Just be there for them, show as much affection as you can in non-physical ways, don't force the hugs, and when they are comfortable in their bodies and emotions they will come around again. There is a tonne of parenting literature about this stuff out there, you are not alone. As for your son/s I have no idea, there is probably a similar equivalent out there for same-sex parent-child relationships. It's wonderful you are so open and affectionate with your kids and that will pay off in the long run. Just hang in there and try to engage with them in ways they are comfortable, and try getting your physical affection needs met through your SO and/or a pet. It sounds like one of your love languages is touch so pets are wonderful for a top-up!

i’m a teen and i think your kids will return to that stage where they feel comfortable with physical touch again. i’m 19 year old girl, and just as the comment directly above mine said, i think at this age we feel very awkward. about everything. our bodies, life in general, growing up, etc. i feel so awkward right now with my body and how to act natural when i hug my dad and whatnot. i don’t know, it’s just an extremely awkward phase of our lives, i think. and it actually HURTS me to feel awkward because i wish i could just be like my younger self again. so i just wanted to say that maybe your kids are upset at themselves for feeling awkward just as i am, but it’s just difficult navigating through this awkward phase of our lives.

For context on the "awkward dad photo" I believe this was sometime after he got done serving his sentence of many years in a high security prison, so she had spent years away from him while growing up. Real G though, not afraid to fuck with the mafia or the government, plenty of rappers and celebs that talk that shit and can't back it up these days. P.S.
