This is like a harder Epica. I can hear the influence from Mark and Ariën so clearly. If Mark is the one writing the music here as well I am just blown away. Epica and Mayan needs more recognition, and Mark is another Tuomas, or even more.

Definitely he is a genius of the symphonic metal scene. I think he or at least Epica as a band is getting the recognition, they were headliners in Alcatraz festival for instance. MaYan seems more like a side project but they sound pretty amazing, don't know how far he is willing to take it

Yep, Mark writes the majority of the Mayan songs. Basically this music would not fit into the Epica sound, it's to heavy according to Mark so he founded Mayan as a side project. He said that he knew that the audience for Mayan will be limited, but they managed to do some touring in their already 10 years of existence. Epica will always be Mark's main focus though..and yes, he is a very talented musician, composer and lyricist

OMG I ENJOYED THIS SO MUCH! (I apologise because this is gonna be a bit long lol) Marcela is a real powerhouse, there's so much to discover about her and her career, she can practically sing everything, much like floor, and she's also a vocal coach at a metal academy in the Netherlands. There's so many things that you could react to regarding her: her first band was Stream Of Passion, and I suggest the live versions of their songs Street Spirit, This Endless Night, When You Hurt Me The Most, Don't Let Go, all from their last concert Memento. Her last project, Dark Horse White Horse, is so powerful, and on her youtube page (Marcela Bovio) you can find the live rendition of the song "Get Out", (I really recommend that one), plus several acoustic covers of famous songs like Take On Me, Somewhere Only We Know by Keane, The Man Who Sold The World by David Bowie etc.. On her Patreon she covers a wide range of songs, like The Diva Dance from the 5th Element, Casta Diva from Bellini, and lately Pisces by Jinjer, and she NAILS all of them. I'd really like to see you react to more Marcela, she deserves the recognition! Last, but not least, the first singer (the one with the bandana) is George Oosthoek, and he performed several times with Within Temptation, and I cannot recommend you enough the song Candles, from the Within Temptation concert Elements (there's a good quality video on youtube although it's the entire concert, but this song is at minute 49.40), it's so grand and epic, and also haunting. Sorry, I knew this was going to be long, but I had to share, and thank you once again Christi, your passion and insight on music just make me appreciate these songs even more!

great video here :) marcela's so ridiculously, diversely talented, but I feel like she's never found that perfect musical home for her career? mayan is the best feature of her full voice, but her band Stream of Passion has great material, and her solo albums Unprecedented and Through Your Eyes are sort of experimental modern chamber music with some glorious highlights. I absolutely love her singing in Spanish, as in the song Dime, which has one of the most beautiful lyrical flows I've heard. marcela has my favorite opera sound in the metal space, and you noted that fiercely metallic belt that's just. so. cool. she's been singing in metal bands since '95, and for my taste, the holy trinity is Simone Simons, Anneke van Giersbergen, and Marcela Bovio, but Floor was my original gateway into metal in general through her band (with one of the growlers here, Mark) After Forever. the bonds of friendship and history that knit all these European metal groups together is one of my favorite things about the scene, it just seems pretty healthy and a wonderful light in the world compared to a lot of the music industry. I hope it all brings you some joy, and if it does that you explore it some more!

MaYan is a musseum of great vocals. Both Floor and Simone have performed with them and Marcela has also done Sancta Terra with Epica. They were going to have a 10th anniversary show with an orchestra in 2020 so let's hope that show will happen in a few months

I'm right there with you... I had been INTENDING to find/listen to MaYan for over a year, ever since encountering Marcella in Ayreon's catalog. So this morning (with no warning) I find you did a reaction and I said "Cool, this lady knows her vocals and has an appreciation for all-things-musical, maybe it'll be a good introduction..." And I'm right with you...."No Words". Oddly enough, music I've been meaning to work on for DECADES is now starting to pour out of me.... I hadn't planned on taking a free-day, but it might just happen. Wow. Anyway, you definitely caught the high points in the composition, and I'd love to hear a breakdown of the chord progressions from your viewpoint. (don't worry, do NOT feel forced to...if you'd rather, Ill drag this one in front of Doug for hid daily diagnosis). Heaven and Hell Radio City Music Hall, especially Children of the Sea, Sign of the Southern Cross and the eponymous Heaven and Hell. I always wear my RJD cancer fund T-Shirt to concerts because I think he is the absolutely best male metal singer ever. Once upon a time during a meet and greet in Canada with Nightwish (I think it was Edmonton), Marco noticed my shirt and remarked that RJD was the best ever.

Mayan is Mark Jansen (Epica founder, ex-After Forever) side project, much more heavy then Epica. The lineup changed during these years, Laura Macri was involved since the beginning, they also had guest vocalists in the first 2 albums, Floor in both and Simone in the first. Marcela is a more recent add-on, to the 3rd and last album they published some year ago.

The new male growler is Mark Jansen, the guitarist/composer/growler of Epica. He is Simone Simins' ex and currently in a relationship with Lauca Macri, the Italian opera singer. AFAIK, Mayans is his personal project.

Hi Christy. I am not very big on death metal. The growling gets old after a short time. It is OK to use occasionally, but not for too long. However, I do love Marcela Bovio and her music. I would indeed love to see you react to Dio. If you want to see him near the beginning of his vocal career (he actually started 20 years earlier in the mid-fifties as a bass player) you should try Rainbow's Stargazer (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIe7qmSFncZ4iLs). If you want to see him near the end you should try Don't Talk to Strangers (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnW3f417f8qEqpo). As an interesting piece of trivia, the horn sign that people make at metal concerts was popularized by Dio. It's a hex against the evil eye that his grandmother taught him when he was a boy. And I agree with you about Marcela Bovio. She has a wonderful voice as well as world class technique. She can't match Floor for tone, but then neither can anyone else.

Not only did Mark Jansen start Mayan he also started Epica and before then he was in After Forever with Floor. The metal community are always collaborating and starting projects together. As far as Dio, I reccomend Dio-Last in line, Rainbow in the dark. Heaven and hell when he was in Black Sabbath.

Yes!!! Ronnie James Dio is definitly something you -MUST- look at as he is known to be one of the godfather of heavy metal music. A lot of people will suggest Holy Diver or Rainbow in the dark as they are his most popular songs (both of em). Honestly i'd go with this song, from this video here The last in line - live at the Spectrum 1984 kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6KYhGRmmah7l6c The reason is that it showcase a lot of his skills while showing how theatrical he is on stage and...obviously, 1984 probably was the peak of his career. He was still young, healthy, powerful and thr audio recording on this show is good. (And the video quality is still good considering the year it was filmed) Anyway, it doesn't really matter which song or video you'll pick as Dio always was (or almost always) flawless on stage. It is not a wonder that most of the rock and heavy metal singer has Dio in their influences. This small man casted a giant shadow on the heavy metal genre and rvrn after his death, people will look upon him as one of the greatest.

Hi Christi, greetings from the Netherlands. I always enjoy your reaction videos. I might have an interesting recommendation for you. Have you ever listened to AURI? AURI is a band composed of Finnish keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, his wife and Finnish vocalist Johanna Kurkela and English multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Troy Donockley. As you know, Holopainen and Donockley are also members of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. They describe their music as celestial metal, with influences from folk music, Celtic music and soundtracks. It has the metal attitude, but without all of the electric guitars and bass. Since you loved this experience, may I suggest that you try watching Within Temptation “The Other Half of Me”, from the Black Symphony Live DVD. This concert has Within Temptation joined by a live orchestra and a choir on stage; along with a few guests. “The Other Half of Me” features George from this performance. Well after doing this you'll have no problem getting into Epica's harder songs, since this is the side project of Mark Jansen the leader of Epica, some musicians also overlap. There he is the one who does the death metal growls.

In most cases I really don’t like growling and this is one of them. The rest is great. You should heat Marcella Bovio sing beautifully in Stream of Passion, another starter project by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Live of course. You can also see her perform the Stream of Passion song Out in the real world; the electric castle live and other tales by Ayreon. Mark Jansen, George Oosterhuis, Marcella Bovio all performed in The electric castle live and other tales concert by Ayreon. One of the songs where growling is functional because of the lyrics of the song. Simone Simons, Anneke van Giersbergen also performed there. I follow several music reviews channels. Some are voice coaches and you’re the next to fall for metal music 🤘🏽

Would be one of my favorite bands, if they just got rid of the growling. It baffles me why you would put the growling front and center, when you have stunning singers like Marcela & Laura. Just my taste I guess. Also to hear lots more of Marcela, watch more of the Ayreon live concert Universe performances.

@@shuriken4852 well in that case I think they are very clever about where to include the growls. Not all Epica songs have them and some have just some small lines. I like the duality of both vocals, to me it enhances the sound which is heavier than other symphonic metal bands so it works for me.

I don't mind heaviness in music, as long as it is melodic and lyrical, to me growls are not melodic at all, as all you can do is play with the dynamics of them, but they do not really have much of a pitch, so to my ears they are not attractive.
