I saw Band-Maid live at St Andrews Hall, a small club in Detroit last year. They played "Daydreaming". I was maybe three rows back from Kanami as she played her electrifying solo. Pure magic. This is a torch song. Saiki and Miku wrote the lyrics. If you love this, take in "About Us" from their 'Online Okiyu-ji' that they streamed from an empty venue during the lockdowns.

Kanami's solo, same for me, same for me... and then Miku's interlude. Though, the whole song is such a finely cut, glittering gem. It shines a slightly different way, on every listening. Before BAND-MAID rather eclipsed them, U2 was my favorite rock band. So I do love Kanami's chiming The Edge -like guitar tone, for much of the song.

@@thevikingbuddha her best solos are on these slow(ish) songs ... Daydreaming and Wonderland are two of my favorites ... my favorite solo Kanami *didn't* play was on 'Gion-Cho' (a Band-Maiko original song) in which, as I understand she had decided that the other girls were going to start learning the craft of being song writes and arrangers ... she laid back in Gion-Cho and made the others, through their instruments and vocals, handle most of her 'duties' of 'lead work' ... Kanami may have done the least fancy guitar work she has ever done with Band-Main on that song, but as it turns out she started the band on the path to an amazing spurt of growth that continues even to this day. After 10 years as a fan, my greatest fear is Band-Maid will release a song or album that I will not feel any special about ... hasn't happened yet, and I'm starting to trust that they never will! ;-)

Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, The One, Anemone, Endless Story, Memorable, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile -- an unbelievable range of mid-tempo songs from the greatest hard rock band on the planet - Band-Maid. I agree. This particular song is cemented in a special place for many. Only their third single and yet, a complete, mature, perfectly crafted song. And that solo! When the day comes for you to see them live, my only wish is for you to choose the smallest venue possible. Festivals are limited sets, while proper Okiyujis always include all the surprises and extras that can only happen in those smaller clubs. There is much to learn, my friend. There will be expectations for you in that audience. Maybe consider the brief 5 minute compilation from Ohrenje: “Band Maid Omajinai Time” Miku says it’s “the most important time in Okiyuji, po!”

They played the big music festivals last year such as Lallapaloosa in Chicago, Point Fest in St Louis, Rockville in Florida and Aftershock in California in '22. Plus they play all over the US from East Coast to West coast. Their tour bus driver stayed in the same hotel as I did in Houston TX. He had some cool stories to share along with other Band-Maid fanatics that follow them on their US tour. The best place to see them is in a small venue of 2-3 thousand. Their English is very limited but that does not stop them, especially Miku from communicating and having a blast with their fans. Edit: I booked 2 plane flights to see them last year (because as you know the US is quite large)

When I got to see them for the only time in 2022, this song was one of them that was memorable for me. This was one of their singles so there's a lot of interviews about how the song came together and all that, and it's all very interesting. Kanami was asked to pull from a lot of different popular references at the time, like western pop music and even tropical house music. (The little ramp up with the chimes and claps was Kanami's influence from that). It was also when Saiki admitted she was ready to sing about love, because before that, she didn't feel she had experienced enough or was mature enough to sing about that topic. Also, something you'll notice is that the slower songs are when Kanami brings the more powerful, soulful solos, this one being a fan favorite. There's just something about how Kanami writes the songs that is so satisfying. She uses ramp ups, drops, variation, all to wonderful success, not to mention the choruses and riffs are always so melodic and pleasing.

The "new daydreaming" off the new album "epic narratives" is called "the one". I hope it will be the next MV. When it was first released it became the most listened to of the new material until "Forbidden Tale", which had been in second place received an MV and moved ahead. "The one" is however the sleeping giant in that album. Saiki is absolutely incredible - the whole thing is a masterpiece. One has to bear in mind that kanami is unashamedly in love with saiki and that affection is returned in her own way, a song like that which mainly pushes the artistry of the two of them has an extra exquisite energy. We don't know how this "love affair" actually plays out, they're subtly very physical on stage, even in Japan these days, they walked down the aisle at yokohama like a married couple and kanami gazed at saiki as she performed in adoration. Kanami's outro solo has the kind of beautiful savagery that the solo here does but in a totally different way.

MISA does like whiskey, Miku does like old man's food and entertainment (horse racing etc) Akane really does pig out on bananas during the gig, and yes mincho has had an open crush on saiki almost since they started working together. Lately though, since saiki is alleged to have broken away from a toxic relationship with an older guy she seems to be leaning into Mincho's unqualified adoration. Mincho (kanami) posted an Instagram about having a date with saiki with a picture of a coffee and a hand tagged "saiki" saying "we've been too busy to have a date for a while". They are unreserved on stage in the USA but until the yokohama gig not in Japan. There is something very Mincho and very Japanese (and neurodivergent) about the whole affair. In the beginning she took hundreds of pictures of saiki secretly and filled her phone and was outed when she was forced to show them on a TV show. She has also said that she writes and plays for saiki to hear and plays for her on stage. It could have been a disaster but they seem to enjoy it together now. Apart from Akane they are all weird. One of Saiki's favourite foods is live baby octopus "I know people say it's cruel because they try to get away (from her mouth) but they're so tasty." and this was obviously not part of a flex. The interview was mainly about growing vegetables on her balcony. (She has a room just for her trainsets). "People say we're so close it's creepy" saiki says of the band as people. Sometimes they sleep together on the star bed in the tourbus like a litter of puppies. The very special nature of their music and performance cannot be detached from the nature of their spirit (Kami?) as a band. Bandmaid is their individual and collective devotion. They're Japanese, they have no religion in the western sense. They need no salvation, they only wish to serve. Asked seperately in interviews recently they each said that the band was everything to them and they never wish for it to end.. Another great quote from saiki "I sleep very well, the others don't, this is because I don't have such deep thoughts."

Wait until you hear Band-Maid's "The One". For me, as well as many other Maidiacs it quickly went beside "Daydreaming" as one of their best emotional songs.

I am loving how much you are into Band-Maid, Viking, subbed! You are clearly a super-feeler for this really emotional stuff from them. Warning: Do not watch the live version of Endless Story from the Yokohama show, it will likely kill you stone dead.

Daydreaming was the last song of the acoustic concert last year. If you think the rock version gives you the feels, the acoustic version is a massive pileup of onion delivery trucks. It starts with Saiki doing the intro on the piano. Miki and Kanami doing backup vocals. Of course they rearranged the song for the acoustic version, because they are Band-Maid. Taking a beautiful song and turning it to 1. The CD for last years acoustic concert went on presale today on the Band-Maid website. You have to be member of the fanclub to buy it. I'm surprised they didn't reissue the Christmas acoustic CD, since it sells out so fast. In 2025 they are planning another acoustic concert, hopefully live-streamed. Misa has talked about wanting to learn upright bass. I would not be surprised to see her playing an acoustic bass at that show, she can add two more ways to play the bass bow and plucked.

Oh you like acoustic? You’ve just unwittingly opened another Band Maid pigeon hole! I’d suggest the acoustic versions of Sayonakidori and Puzzle, but if you want to do a 2fer, listen to the live electric versions first and then see how they manage to turn both into essentially different songs by doing them acoustically. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
@thevikingbuddhaАй бұрын
Yeah, I defintely want to hear the electric versions first. Thanks for the recommendations.

Hey, I'm not cryin', you're cryin'. 😭 Actually I think all of us have some leaky eyes while listening to the Maids at some point. I've seen some tatted up, big ass biker looking dudes on KZbin just sniffling away, wiping their eyes after hearing Band Maid, with no idea why they can't keep it together.
