I can't believe it! I used to live just up the road from that property with the general store. I remember back in 1993 going to a pig pickin' there by the original owners, and the store, while not operational, still had everything in the store. I didn't realize the big white house was only 4 yrs old at the time. The town has definitely changed - a LOT! The downtown used to be pretty dull, mostly catering to local farmers and people who worked at the mill. Now it's so cool and arty! Love it.

I know! We had such a blast and were so pleasantly surprised by how many new things had come to town.

Canton downtown started getting "dull" in the late 1980s after the shopping centers popped up. There used to be dime stores, drug stores, department stores, grocery stores, doctors offices, eating places....it was a lively little place when I graduated high school in 1982, but downtown's decline was starting then and it was completed after the 2004 floods.

I live in S.FL and love visiting WNC during the summer for the mountains, hiking, and ultra-friendly locals.......usually start out from Cedar mountain then drive the winding /hilly roads to somewhere awesome....putting Canton and Waynesville on my list to visit.

I grew up in Canton, born in 1960, dad worked at champion. Great memories.

My stepfather worked at Crane & Co in Dalton, MA. It was the paper mill that produced the paper used for money, a special durable paper with high cotton content. I know that paper mill smell.

Yes, the mead paper mill in Tennessee in the 1950's! Then we had the cannery, which I think was Stokley van Kamp around Bybee , Tennessee! I think it shut down in the mid 60's!

The smell from the paper mill is gone. Sad loss for mill workers but wonderful for surrounding area. I would think the Pigeon River will clear up even more. Canton will rise again. Being that I went to HCC, I remember those streets vividly. I do ask...what will they do with the old mill, which is an eye sore? Oh, and there use to be a Christmas walk that residents would offer in the old historic houses. They could bring that back and offer some even more charm. ❤

I have heard that someone has bought the mill and has plans to do something cool with it. Not sure what yet though.

Well Beth, you are showing your age like my middle son is now! Well, just love the Western Carolinas and the Eastern Tennessee mountains! Makes me think of Kenny Chesney of eastern Tenn,. and then across the gap into NC. Well, Huddle House on Hendersonville Road has been our breakfast stop for the last 25 years on our trips to the Biltmore Estate!

Well, I hear the mill in Canton, NC, went out of business! And then businesses changed in this town and went out of business! I think Canton/NC is just across the state line into Cocke County , Tennessee! I remember when Stokley Van Camp built the cannery in the Bybee Tennessee, area of Cocke County!

Yes! The Mill did shut down and someone bought it. Not sure what they will do with it though.

If you are like me and retired these small towns can be perfect. But younger folks people with kids,, these towns are money traps. You won't make it here with deep pockets ... people have to work.. even in small lessor expansive areas the jobs can't be minimum wage no insurance no 401k no future jobs... So don't move here without a real plan and a real job...
