I love her interpretation of this song. In my mind, I have always pictured it being performed this way. This isn't a song that should be performed 100% hopeful or 100% defiant. The ideal performance of this song would entail a bit of self doubt and fear at the beginning, hinting at how jaded the performer currently is regarding her love life. That timid beginning should quickly lead to a hint of defiance flecked with anger (at having lost in love so many times before, inwardly rejecting the possibility of giving up on love, willing to give it another go even risking being hurt again) and at the crescendo the performer should be portraying an almost hysterical amount of hope, not portraying the absence of fear but rather the courage to fall in love again even while fearing failure.

I totally agree! Jane Horrocks rendition when they revived it was one of my favorites! That Cabaret use to be on KZbin not sure if it still is. Alan Cumming reprised his role as the Emcee as well! I’m so glad for Audra McDonald performance, although so effortlessly stunning, she isn’t afraid of portraying raw grit. Edit: I found it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4DWaWWrl6usfLM Edit edit: it was Jane Horrocks Cabaret I was thinking of not Maybe This Time.

There is only one note that is anything to write home about, and that is the last. The vibrato is so wild the chords do not work. When the range of the vibrato is a full quarter tone or more, the chord structure falls apart. She has a beautiful voice, a great talent, but that voice is wasted.

Dreadful. She does’t understand the lyrics. It’s about someone who is bullshitting themselves so you have to look and sound more hopeful while still letting the desperation shine through as opposed to putting it on display all the way through the song. I am no fan of Liza Minnelli but she was well-directed in Cabaret and did it just right. It had an emotional impact. This, in contrast, is just exhibitionist hysteria!

@munbok5 күн бұрын
Agreed. I've got tickets for Gypsy and I'm now worried that her big Mama Rose numbers might sound too operatic.
@qjgm4 жыл бұрын
Ms. McDonald has a brilliant way to make her vocal chords shine... and that's a thrill for anyone of us. But my feeling is that the narrator (singer) of the song knows almost for sure that this new relationship is not going to last but she needs it to be real, although she knows down deep that it's not the case. She's been in a "hundred" of relationships where she's felt that she's been giving her all and the results have been horrible. But she doesn't lose hope. The next guy she's involved with, she thinks he's all the things that all the men before weren't. She's so almost childishly excited that she isn't going to feel a little bit suspicious about the things that his new lover is doing. Just in a sentence, this song needs to be sung in an hurtful ironic way: I know you are not the one, but I need to feel that you are
@steffi-funny12837 жыл бұрын
WOW!!!
@lynnepierce94833 жыл бұрын
McDonald is a powerful performer, one of the best on Broadway, but her voice is too polished for this song. It's supposed to be rougher, like in a cabaret, not one step short of operatic. This is pleasant to listen to, but I've heard better. If you find re-runs of "Schitt$ Creek" and watch the "Cabaret" episode, the Stevie character is much closer to what is intended.

@Rusty36596 жыл бұрын
No - not at all. She had a completely different type of vocal training. When she went to Julliard, they forced her to sing opera, whenever she preferred Frank Loesser, John Kander and Fred Ebb and Rogers and Hammerstein. Had Whitney Houston been vocally trained in the sane manner, she could've easily sang in Audra McDonald's style too.
