‘Mayday’: Firefighter killed, 5 others hurt in McCully building fire

I rented the makai/Waikiki corner room on the 2nd floor in that white 2-story early 1900s house in the '90s. The smell of those old wooden plantation buildings is special and rare with today's cheap drywall construction. The room's open beam ceiling soared high above the old wooden plank floor. The two huge wood-frame screen windows on the room's Waikiki side swung inward to the sight and shade of a huge mango tree. The sun would shine through the tree branches and glass jalousies in the morning. The sound of rustling mango leaves throughout the day & night was inexplicably peaceful. The makai kitchen window brought in light and also overlooked the newly-built (at the time) single-story dentist office below. That room was the very best I lived in throughout my college and early adulthood years. Ms. Park was also THE best landlord ever. A very kind, bubbly, happy and gracious soul. I hadn't seen her since. Fast forward three decades later: I stopped by the property a little over a year ago while working in the area and found Ms. Park in front cultivating her garden. She hadn't changed after all these years. Wonderfully warm & gracious. Mahalo Ms. Park. You gave me indelible memories in that lovely place. I yearn for the same peace, vigor and fervor today as I near 60. Although the old plantation house will likely be demolished from the fire damage, I hope you are well and survive this tragedy. My deepest condolences and comfort to the family of the brave firefighter who perished as well.

Nooo!!!! Not a firefighter!!!! I've never met a firefighter that didn't treat people with respect and kindness. They truly serve and protect the people. unlike the cops and other civil servants.

New York accent but doesn't know about Long Island or Manhattan Island's trash system. They send trash to mainland, burn, recycle and reuse. Oahu is an island so should do the same and not have landfill.

everybody does it now.....since the constant upgrades of iphones and androids.....they actually could be far away, yet...the quality of the device makes it possible to zoom in and get a better shot. Also, that video from Aliamanu, 2 drone users filmed it....and because its pitch black at night, nobody would even see it in the air. But so happened that THAT house with the mayhem occurring, anyone would be able to "notice" there was a problem with that ONE house.....that it looked out of control.
