Kind of a late call by ATC. Sounded like they were on oxygen mask.

Normally they are. And normally thr controller will ask that to the pilot while he's still airborne. Especially with a mayday call

So even after all of the information tower has, the pilot still needed to request a fire truck. Ridiculous.

Came down here to say the same thing before the video ended! They must have the system that dispatches the FD only if flames are showing!

Am I missing something? Did this plane in routine flight go from departure to approach controllers and then once in distress shift to approach on another frequency? How is it that they would go to an approach controller after departure while on course for Spain?

When the airspace isn't busy, they will combine Approach and Departure control on one frequency.

As HiddenWindshield said. Approach and Departure at many airports are handled by the same person on the same frequency. The controller should have said contact Departure but said Approach. No big deal. One in of the same.

ATC here seems in a hurry and completely incapable of projective thought. The pilot declared Mayday, gave enough information that ATC should have already called the Fire brigade in responce.

why they say "Heavy" ???

"Heavy" is added to the callsign if the plane is heavier than 300 000 pounds. It's because larger aircraft generate more wake turbulence, which could be dangerous for smaller craft. An American Airlines flight crashed in 2001 NYC after it lost control due to pilot error in responding to wake turbulence from a 747.
