DESCRIPTION: DECEMBER 8, 2024 A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1000 (A35K), operating from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), experienced a computer failure that restricted the pilots' ability to confirm whether the landing gear and flaps were in the correct position. Additionally, it was noted that the malfunction may have caused a loss of nose wheel steering. The crew declared a PAN-PAN emergency but later landed safely on JFK's runway 31R.

Maybe a dumb question, from a VFR pilot, but how can they fly on a "route number" when they don't have a flightplan and make it as a VFR flight, why don't they just use the registration then? 🙂

Declare. Stay high. If the controller clears you to descend (like he did first to 5000 then to 3000) when you have a dead cylinder, say unable, and in fact climb if you still have power. Make a circling descent over the airport. IMC with bases at 200 is a tough spot that’s for sure.

He’s an emergency aircraft he can be as wordy as he likes. Transmission decorum is for not hogging the channel needlessly and distracting ATC when they’ve got something better or more important to do than talk to you. Once you are an emergency aircraft you are the most important thing for the ATC to handle in that airspace and their primary purpose becomes doing everything in their power to ensure your safe landing on the ground. Anybody else on frequency is supposed to steer clear and shut up and stay out of the way unless they have something vital to air safety to contribute.
@craig7350Күн бұрын
Too wordy? It was the twr asking for the nature of the emergency that the pilot has to explain to them, which controllers don't know shlt about aircraft systems anyway.

Several years ago I was working as a test pilot for a company modifying Boeing aircraft. We leased a 767 from Delta in support of a contract requiring a test flight upon completion. Delta supplied a Captain to fly with me. Prior to the pre flight brief the Delta Captain requested I file the flight plan and fly the test. He admitted that he had neither filed a flight plan nor conducted a departure and flight under VFR rules in over 20 years.

I’ve launched out of LAX VFR before. Ended up getting a phone number, not because I had a violation. ATC was confused and didn’t know what to do with me. They wanted to rehash the flight from my perspective because some of the controllers made mistakes. They launched me squawking 1200!
@normannutbar4242 күн бұрын
Classic JFK arrogance! There absolutely should have been more efforts to explain that the read back of the callsign is required. The term that ATC should have used was “use standard phraseology”. Given that ATC’s ultimate role is to increase safety, I think that sending a heavy aircraft around on what is nothing more than a ‘punishment lap’ is outright irresponsible. If this crew are indeed struggling, (which ATC are alleging), then a missed approach is only going to increase their workload.
@0RespectMyAuthority02 күн бұрын
I'm on JFK's side this time. For legality he cannot release a plane from IFR separation if they are not properly identified. Yes, he probably knew who was talking but these procedures exist for a reason and becoming relaxed with them sets a dangerous precedent.
@kdflfКүн бұрын
absolute nonsense. forcing an aircraft do a go-around as a punishment is completely unacceptable. yes callsign readbacks are important but there was ZERO ambiguity in this situation.
@stevenaltaccount9476Күн бұрын
easy for you to say, if something went wrong with either the landing or passengers on board or anything and an investigation is launched, who do you think is now also on the hook for that? oh right, the ATC who knowingly disregarded procedure.
@kdflfКүн бұрын
@@stevenaltaccount9476 and imagine if the aircraft had an incident during an unnecessary go-around just because the controller wanted to make a point/punish the pilots. the controllers behaviour is totally unacceptable

Absolute perfection from the First Officer! Not even cruising yet when his sharp eye recognised the problem and took immediate action! He piloted a complicated and unexpected turn around, got medical help for the captain, pulled in the off-duty pilot, and managed communications all within minutes and by himself. What a legend! Personally, I bloody hate flying. I fly only out of necessity. But I would feel so much more confident knowing my pilot was as competent as this FO! I'm sure most of them are, but to hear it on ATC is comforting. Thanks for providing this audio. I watch these videos not because I know anything about airplanes, or even want to, but because it does reassure me as a nervous passenger. Well done! Thanks!

This is NOT too rare. Long Beach Airport (KLGB) near LAX does this on occasion. Complete with vectors (non-radar while within the Delta surface area), to restrictions, handoffs to SoCal TRACON and then with radar vectors outside of the Delta. All while the jets or turbo props are under VFR and no filed IFR flight plan. I’ve done it numerous times.

Grossly (and this really is grossly) simplified: VFR (Visual Flight Rules) means: The pilot navigates on his own and flies wherever he wants to go. The opposite is IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) where the pilot files a flight plan and flies according to this plan. New York is a crowded air space, so normally they fly IFR, meaning the controllers oversee the airspace and coordinate the planes according to their files flight plans. As said: This is grossly oversimplified.
