It's incredible to see that a flight that got hit by a missile that caused all hydraulics to be gone from the airplane and still manage to land the aircraft safely with no one injured is a remarkable achievement. Hats off to the pilots for managing to overcome all the odds to land the plane!

To accuse the journalists of being able to stop this was absolutely asinine🙄. They would’ve just been shot or beheaded and the plane would’ve still been shot with the surface to air missile. It’s possible the journalists and cameras were enough of a distraction to the terrorists focus that it caused the second one to miss its target

A great example of how good cockpit resource management can and does save planes. The first officer and engineer knew when they needed to challenge the captain's decisions, and the captain respected their judgment and input. Amazing airmanship by all three.

Japan’s doomed flight was such a different set of challenges and obstacles unique to their particular situation that I wouldn’t even really compare them quite frankly. The crew were just as heroic for keeping the plane up in the air as long as they did under the circumstances.

I agree. Considering the JAL had its vert stabilizer torn off, the nose would have swung from side to side and stable flight made unachievable; it's not fair to compare incidents like DHL or UA232 to it.

My dad was the vice president of the private leasing company that owned this airplane. He showed me a lot of pictures of where the missile hit and what the damage was. He told me since that accident, all three pilots retired, and insurance wrote the airframe off. I don't recall if the engines were still good or not.

Jal 123 planes condition was simulated in a flight simulator and no crew could keep it flying as long as it did out of 4 different flight crews I think.

... So, we're flying out of Baghdad airport right? Then some terrorists fired a missile at us, took out a wing, and we lost all hydraulic power. All we could do was steer the plane with our engines. So after flying the damaged plane like no one else in history, we miraculously land it. And then it gets bad.

Wow that was crazy!! I couldn't believe they landed & then be told they had to stop because there was possible explosives! Holy crap! Good job to those guys, they kept their cool & got on the ground. This episode just blew my mind the entire time. I can't believe the journalist standing there while it was happening but I don't know what I would of done if I was in her shoes either.

According to big mathis, the most damaged plane to land is an Antonov-124 with hundreds of holes in it, half the right wing missing, no vertical stabilizer, and one horizontal stabilizer

I love how the plane is approaching the Baghdad airport, getting closer and closer to the runway, and then the cut scene at 37:22 of the emergency vehicles is like, "Somewhere in Ohio, emergency services stands by...". I think you can tell from the subtext also that the copilot and the engineer had disagreements with the captain. During the emergency.

The copilot and the engineer being willing to disagree with the captain is how cockpit resource management is supposed to work, so this just serves as a great example of how CRM can and does save planes! The three worked together and got the plane on the ground.

Wow, pretty darned intense. Despite a cheesy narration, my palms got sweaty. Belgian pilots are known for good training and enthusiasm for flight. Its difficult to become a pilot in Belgium. All of the Belgian pilots that I know continue flying for fun when not on company time, from gliders to competetive aerobatics and all in between.

He is definitely a brilliant pilot. Skilled, fast thinker, problem solver, and he's willing to listen to his crew, even when they correct him. He's willing to listen to someone in a subordinate position, even to the point of saying "you're right, we'll do it your way". He's one of the good guys.

232 had an engine out and blown hydraulics, DHL had major structural damage on top of that. And mines, can’t forget mines, no mines in Iowa. No insurgents with rockets either.

@@jaysmith1408 UAL 232 did have major damage that engine was attached to the tail. It is a miracle they made it as far as they did, almost making the runway before the wing dipped and they went tumbling. The Emergency Services of Sioux City, Iowa and the surrounding communities did an amazing job triaging and getting the wounded medevacked to area hospitals in like 45 minutes or something.

Great job! I think the only reason these pilots are not international heroes is simply because they were flying a cargo plane rather than a passenger plane. Those terrorist turds would have not cared either way. The fact that the pilots actually landed and saved not only their own lives but the plane as well was simply phenomenal. I also think those pilots also owe some thanks to the pilots of the Sue City crash. The fact the pilots studied their own craft enough to learn lessons from other pilot's experiences shows a tremendous amount of professionalism. DHL had some true heroes that day.

@@borisquince6302 Yeah, I don't know much about maintenance and the cost of repairing such damage. By the time these birds become cargo haulers they are often hand-me downs anyway, so even if it could be repaired it just might not be worth it in the end, much less having the risk of missing some hidden damage.

Ya I think it’s a matter of civilian vs military. Those two types of flight are not the same. Active combat aircraft suffer unimaginable damage and make it back. US A 10 warthogs take abuse in combat.

Same thing with the A-10's name precursor, the P-47 Thunderbolt, as well as the Hellcat and Corsair, and (most) four-engined bombers from WWII. Those things could take untold amounts of damage and keep flying, thanks to that huge R-2800 Double Wasp engine that also gave the things a lot of top speed.

Describing the situation: Having to fly a transport aircraft without hydraulics has never been done, except for Japan 747. Evidentially you’ve never heard of UAL232 N1819U.
