My opinion is how long the crew and passengers knew it was going to crash. That time spent in terror must have been torture. A quick death rather than slow and possibly painful for those survivors that died from not receiving help.

More could have lived if they had carried the rescue operation, instead they turned their backs like cowards and also sent back the American rescue helicopter which came first to help just because of politics. Those who died during the night by not getting rescued instead were murdered. It wasn't the flight that killed them. Extremely horrible operation.

The amount of G force put on the humans in the plane were not surviviable its a miracle 4 survive with such a terrible crash. The passengers suffered a horrific fate due to the intense heat after the crash, which caused their bodies to sustain significant damage, including the bursting of internal organs. This occurred to almost all the passengers in the fatal crash. The bursting of internal organs and other severe injuries were a result of the extreme physical forces experienced during the crash, leading to devastating consequences for the individuals involved.

I cannot even imagine... Surviving the plane crash, And then hearing helicopters thinking you will be ok all you have to do is wait a little longer. Then 14 hours goes by and still nobody has come. Its sad. I wonder how many people they could have saved if the US had been allowed to send men in. This should never have happened. As for the rescuers camping in a village just shy of the wreck is un excusable. You should never assume there are no survivors.

Exactly. I watched the doc about the Korean Air crash on Guam and the governor of Guam was one of the first responders on site to help drag people from the burning plane. He WALKED in with the rescue team to help. The rescue commander tried to get him to go back but he wouldn't hear of it. He was determined to help those people. Compare that to this dismal failure of ALLOWING these people to lay there, suffer and die is just unforgivable.

I’m not a very emotional individual. But I might add. Of all these episodes this one struck me deeply. Especially when the air traffic controller didn’t hear from 123. The crew doing everything they can. The air traffic from American and Japanese. The off duty flight attendant was given a second chance for her bravery. It’s such a shame that the rescue efforts was hindered due to politics. 500 human lives!

This is just so tragic - on so many levels. We've all had experiences in life where shoddy workmanship caused us to return damaged and/or substandard merchandise - but we don't lose our lives doing it! This whole situation was a disaster waiting to happen. From inadequate repairs to the assumption of the rescue team that there were probably no survivors, causing them all to spend the night in a location far from the wreckage site - this is just garbage piled on top of rubbish, the whole way through. I really hope some important lessons were learned and taken away from this tragic event. RIP - those who perished, and prayers and condolences to the the victims' loved ones.

@@HellStr82 There IS a creator. There is no doubt in my mind about it. Some people say that science has all the answers. Impossible. Take all the modern marvels created by man such as planes, satellite communications so you can sit in your home and have a video call with someone on the other side of the world, MRI machines that can look into the body layer by layer to discover injuries and diseases, spaceships to go to distant extraterrestrial bodies. That all had to be created by man. It didn't just come out of the dust one day. Now, take the human and animal body; more complex than anything ever created by man. The ability to procreate, bodies that heal themselves, an immune system that fights off viruses and stores information on how to fight this particular virus if it returns, during exertion muscles are working harder and need more oxygen and a signal is sent to the brain and the brain increases the heart rate and speeds up breathing to provide the muscles with the oxygen they need, a cooling system of sweat and evaporation to maintain a constant core temperature, adrenaline glands that give us a boost in strength in critical, physical situations, a filtration system of the liver, kidneys and pancreas to filter out impurities, a brain that can analyze and process terrabytes of information instantly, animal young that know exactly where to go to get their mothers sustenance, the canines of the cheetah are perfectly spaced to separate the vertebrae of it's most desired prey. So, if all of man's modern marvels had to be created, how is it possible that the infinitely more complex human body "just happened?" All of that couldn't just happen. That is design my friend. I've watched many of these plane crash shows, mayday, why planes crash, air disasters, etc. This story is one of the most troubling to me. It's unthinkable that no rescue effort was conducted right away. I can understand a crash in the middle of the ocean presuming all died, but a land crash? I just can't help to wonder how many would have survived if rescue came sooner. I can't begin to imagine the mental torment of being a crash survivor, waiting for help, with many cries of survivors, watching rescue choppers come by and leave. Being on that mountain over night listening to hundreds of people slowly die miserable throughout the night and there's nothing you can do. I'd rather die in the crash than experience that. Just so upsetting how this rescue effort got botched, costing so much unnecessary death and misery.

Even in the middle of the ocean, you can have survivors. Besides the emergency life vests stored under every seat, a lot of plane parts float. One of the details in pre-flight safety lessons is that your seat can be used as a flotation device.

U.S. Military could've been on the ground 1st if they weren't ordered to return. That's really messed up! The terror those people had to go through for so long in the air, some incredibly survived the crash only to be left to die when they could've been saved by U.S. Rescue team. A miracle anyone still survived. That tail section has saved lives through the decades of crashes. I would've had to NOT follow order's to abort and return to base! SAVING LIVES is supposed to always come 1st, or maybe that's just me!! UNFORGIVABLE!

I know, this really upsets me. The rescuers were so selfish waiting 14 hours before setting out for the crash site, assuming that there were no survivors. You never assume everyone is dead after a plane crash or other disaster. It's also infuriating that they refused the assistance of American troops who were stationed nearby the scene. I believe they been allowed to help, at least a couple dozen would have survived.

Fascinating and terrifying! I am appalled that no charges were brought forth and no lawsuits were filed. For 30+ minutes, the passengers suffered *unquestionable anguish and stress* due to the Phugoid cycle. If I had been a DA in Japan, I would have not rested until justice was done. I live in California, and our death-row inmates even have turkey dinner during Thanksgiving. Compare that treatment now to the innocent passengers of this airliner who suffered unbearably while writing their death-bed confessions/notes. This is not right.

Had to rewatch this episode after the season 23 remake of this episode. The difference from this 2005 version and the 2023 episode is insane. They totally watered it down with the new episode, so many details were left out. Nothing about the US ready within minutes of the crash to start a rescue. This episode reminds me of how impactful this show used to be, the story it is telling you. Watching actual news clips of the written notes was gut wrenching. The survivor's account of the other survivor's voices slowing going silent through the night was truly sad.

I have not flown since 1976. I am terrified of flying. I know my fear is irrational, as there are many more car accidents than plane crashes, however, many people survive car accidents, and not many people walk away from a plane crash. I feel so bad for what these poor people went through. I cannot imagine the sheer terror they went through. It was wrong of the Japanese government to wait so long to go and look for survivors, as there would have been more, had they not been left out there all night. I do not understand the refusal to allow the Americans to help with the crash investigation. Clearly the epitome of what not to do in a major plane crash. It appears as if a lot of issues happen because of greed. The companies don't want to spend money to fix things correctly, or they just wait, and I guess hope nothing bad happens. This is dispictable. This accident did not have to happen. It would not have happened if that bulk head been repaired correctly. Lives should be put before profit.

If these pilots had not been skilled and able to keep this plane aloft using only the engines and landing gear with no control surfaces, it is likely that on July 19, 1989 184 more people would have died aboard United 232. Nobody had ever considered such a thing as redundant hydraulics had always made such an event seem statistically impossible. The lead training pilot for United on the DC-10 was onboard that day, as a passenger, and had studied flying a DC-10-10 three-engine jet in the simulator the way these pilots had to see if it could be done at all given similar circumstances. Simulator pilots have consistently failed to do better in either plane. These men did more with almost nothing than many have done with perfectly good airplanes maintained correctly.

The most badass solution in aviation will be a special tow plane which are able to catch uncontrollable planes during flight. Those tow planes need to fly supersonic speeds for obvious reasons. Then the damaged plane "sits" on such a tow plane until landing and everyone is saved... It´s sad they haven´t done this before. But investing a few hundred billion dollars in the construction of such phenomenal planes might save tens of thousands of lifes in the future of aviation...
