HEYY MAN! Did I call it in the last comments section or what? I KNEW that was a Soldano. Unmistakable, incredible tone. That's what I get for trusting my ear. When everyone suddenly became convinced it was a Dumble, Fender, and Two Rock just because John said that's what he liked using, I felt very strangely about it (knowing the tone I was hearing). Doesn't matter what the artist says, trust your ears, because as it turned out it truly was the Soldano because he was probably talking more about live guitar than studio guitar.
@JustinJeske3 жыл бұрын
You did call it!!! Makes total sense honestly! I will say though that when John said Fender, TR, and Dumble that was directly referring to the recording process and gear used on the record in the studio, the whole interview was. He never mentioned the SLO or CE-2 at all in it!
@Diax13243 жыл бұрын
@@JustinJeske Huh! I figured it was more ambiguous. Well, like I said, trust your ears if they tell you something very different to the artist. The main way I could tell was that the CE-2 was very clearly being distorted AFTER, and was not coming after overdrives like John has used it in the past. So scoopy, too, which is almost impossible with a Two Rock and TS, Klon, or even Smoky Signal/other ODs John is known for.

@@JustinJeske Thanks so much for the great videos! Love it! Also that’s what I was wondering, was he using the chorus in front of the gain from the Soldano, and also in front of his drive pedals on his pedalboard? I felt like I recognized the sound of that pulsing you get with a chorus before drive in both his tone and Clapton’s tone on Pretending. Does anyone know for that matter if Clapton ran his rack chorus before drive too? Thanks a lot for the info!

Hearing his solos isolated is so...weird. It's hard to believe that's what was in the final track, as it sounds so, well,...messy. I mean, near the end, you can even hear him either to forget to mute the lower strings or accidentally let off of them. I guess I'm so used to hearing super-tight solos on his album tracks (in particular, Helpless, Rosie, anything off Continuum...those come to mind) that it's weird to hear how these sound isolated. I haven't really heard any stems of his album solos over the years, mainly just because I didn't care to go digging, but does anyone know if this is actually pretty typical of him?

That solo tone sounds WAY more gainy when soloed as opposed to in the mix. Am I the only one that thinks that?

Yup totally. Hearing it by itself is a totally different experience
@SimpleManGuitars19733 жыл бұрын
@@JustinJeske The SLO is known for how heavy it can get anyway and I'm not sure if it's the one Clapton used or not. Brian Wampler actually made a tribute to it called the SloStortion. It's just odd to think that John Mayer was playing with that much gain. I always feel like when I'm playing my AC30 that I've got a ton of gain but hearing him soloed like that makes me think maybe I don't have as much as I thought. Songs like Try I've always felt like had quite a bit of gain but he was using humbuckers on that though.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 yeah it's the same model amp that EC used during the period that JM is mimicing (e.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYHId6mEoqaFpLM) . It's great to hear JM playing through a dirty amp rather than a clean amp with dirt pedals. Sounds so sweet.

Sounds like a fuzz on main lead tone... got some pretty nice results with a klon + green muff + ce-2
@JustinJeske3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s just an overdrive into the Soldano if any pedals were used. That amp was clearly cooking so throwing an OD like the Klon or TS into it would probably equal that OD tone in the studio. A fuzz would be a bit much with the Soldano I personally think.
@geehk3 жыл бұрын
@@JustinJeske Yeah, you're probably right... I have no idea how these Soldanos sounds like... If it's nicely scooped it can sound fuzzy.
@Diax13243 жыл бұрын
Soldanos are bright, relatively scoopy amps (Basically the groundwork for the Mesa Triple Rectifier). It's just more gain than you're used to hearing. Amp overdrive is far more scoopy than pedal overdrive, in most tonestack designs. Mesa/boogie MK amps, Dumbles, Two Rock, and perhaps Matchless are some of the only amps that don't have a very scooped natural tube overdrive, and even then they sound scooped compared to a tubescreamer pedal ran in front of a clean preamp. It's too bad, because when you solely exist in the midrange, there is a fair amount of character that gets lost in the playing of the performer (Fingers brushing against strings, palm smacking the instrument, muting noises etc.), which is why you all love this solo so much - it's a more clear look at John's playing than the highly filtered, dirty/clean midrangey tone he usually has.
