Guitarists appreciate his tone, feel and note choices. He truly is a musical genius. If I didn't play guitar, I wouldn't appreciate him nearly as much.

To my untrained but 80's era obsessed eye, those rack units appear to be an old Rockman rack module, a Tri-Stereo Chorus, and some sort of Eventide unit, possibly a Harmonizer for that 80's detune stuff

Believe it's a Fulltone TERC (part for part recreation of the TSC). I think the Axe FX is there for effects only (not as amp sim), but that's just an educated guess based on JM not being an amp sim guy.

Do you ever give any consideration to the tone &/or volume settings on John's guitars? I never hear it mentioned but it has a huge amount to do with a player's overall tone.

LOL man when I saw the thumbnail, I was thinking "what?! John mayer is using one of the new digital fender tonemasters?? no way! " - I didn't have any knowledge of this fender custom shop tonemaster and was shocked because I just played a tonemaster twin in a shop to demo a guitar and it was ABSOLUTE TRASH. It sounded like a muffled practice amp and absolutely nothing like a twin. What a relief hahaha. This tonemaster is a really cool amp and I found one for sale in Australia. Cool!

Tell Mr Mayor that vibroverb you can do a good trick with it you get two 8 inch amplifier speakers for guitar poem inside the amp in the cabinet and one goes on the left side one goes on the other when you hit getting hooked up with the other speaker you put two holes in each side where you can point the speakers out the side of the amp you ought to hear that surround sound

I'm not a big subscriber to "you need this pedal...but it has to be 1984 with pink screws", but I also don't hate on people who want to chase that piece of gear because there will be some slight differences. However, the tube screamer is one that does irk me a little. A tube screamer is a tube screamer. The differences are slim from one to another. Andertons proved it in their shootout.

Or maybe since there might not be enough info on one guitar for a whole video, you could do a documentary video on all the other types of guitars that John has used outside of his usual, like the guild he used for ‘come when I call’ in where the light is, his 1961 Les Paul sg, the charvel, the Jackson, and even his es 330 he used for the original IGIJFL solo if possible. These are some of the more prominent guitars he’s used outside of the strats, silver sky’s.

Pull all preamp tubes from 2-3-4-5, leave 1 and 6. Plug into channel 1; tap on tubes that you audition by putting them into slot #1 to see if they’re microphonic. (Tube 6 is the phase inverter tube; you need that always in there.)

There is no better power tube for that than RCA 6L6’s, second choice GE 6L6’s. (Brent Jessee Recording for tube advice).

I don't know about the difference in sound, but I will say that I have a vibro champ reverb that was blowing tubes until I got an NOS tube from ww2, and now it holds up. Supposedly because it's biased hot, and that can be a thing with fender's clean style amps like the black panel stuff including this one. But if you used to have noise floor kick up, then tap near the power tube sockets and get it to stop again, that almost sounds like a socket lug problem or a cold solder/lead dress issue on the other end of a conductor in free air to a socket lug. Could be a simple, free fix where you open it up, touch each lead with a chopstick and see if it pops and shorts and opens, and where. As for TPS, I've watched everything they've uploaded since the very very beginning. But I've been permanently banned from commenting for like SIX years, by Mick, because I said SRV wasn't all that, and IDK Mick was having a bad day I guess. I am very bitter, and I tell everyone, because I've even gone to the TPS IG page and begged Mick to unblock me, and he just unilaterally won't. It's only frustrating because I only watch everything they do and always have something to say. So I'm verbose, and I once had an opinion Mick didn't like, is that a fair response to someone who watches almost religiously?! I want to buy a few things from Dan, like a G3S for starters let alone swag and shirts and gear, but I hesitate to give him or them my money when I'm banned from their channel, you know? Isn't it the least I could ask of them if I support them, to unblock me? Anyway if you think it's the tubes, first try making sure the connections are good. With a stick and one hand behind your back, and touching no metal anywhere on your skin, and staying far from any capacitors, and maybe you should just let me do it lol

I was lucky enough to find an original one myself about a year ago, so congratulations man! It's obviously an amazing amp and definitely does the "thing," especially with the JBL. (There's an E130 in mine). Tube wise, mine has old RCA's but I gig the amp all the time (220 shows this year), so I know they probably won't last that much longer, so I'm definitely watching the comments. But on a related note, I also have a '66 Super Reverb which had the same RCA's which eventually died on me. I just went ahead and replaced the tubes in my Super with JJ's. I realize that's not the sexiest option, but I don't really have a source for the RCA's and the cost online is insane. The tonal difference I noticed was that the JJ's seemed to produce slightly less low end, so my settings changed to move the bass up about a half a number. If you can find some old NOS RCA's, I love those, but if you're wanting to play it, I think the power variances between venues and the speaker itself makes a lot more difference. I'm super happy for you man!

Hi JJ, this comment section won’t allow links 🤷🏻‍♂️ If you search Watford Valves and search Vibroverb once there, they do a 64 Vibroverb valve kit, that should give you some info. I have used these guys and they are good.

Great video and info as always Justin. Beautiful amp love the fact that you are trying to restore it to its original glory. I cannot tell you what came in this amp out of the factory but I can tell you I read somewhere that John Mayer loves old RCA tubes. Not cheap but can be found on eBay. Best of luck and keep up the good work.

I own one of those Custom Shop Fender Tone masters for 12 years because of foo fighters. The amp is my favorite sounding amp I’ve ever played. The amp can do a lot depending on how you set it. The unique thing about it is the impedance switch. On the manual the impedance switch is labeled as “high, medium, low” because if you plug the amp into a 16ohm cable the headroom/midrange will vary in a safe manner. I can see how john had the switch set to medium or low and got more breakup and mids out of the amp. Apparently Bruce Zinky liked playing with output sections of the amps he designed at the time. Recommend looking at the pdf manual online for a better explanation.

Great video! I own a Snouse BlackBox 2 for the BluesBreaker tones. I love it. But my love of JM’s tones got me curious and I felt the GAS to buy a reissue Marshall BluesBreaker. It was a special day when it arrived and I opened that box. And beyond any hype, it’s is actually a beautiful sounding pedal. There is something in that Marshall BluesBreaker pedal that I can’t quite get from my other BB style pedals - King of Tone, Snouse, Mooer Blues Crabs. What a great pedal - so happy Marshall brought it back in its original glory.

Howard was from Bakersfield.. and before the Hollywood crowd started paying insane prices .. guys in town payed 15-1700 dollars for the few he had made. Some CW bands tried them but after a while went back to twins etc cuz they said it was too loud and ice picky … he worked on a few fenders for me when he was in Bakersfield.. then LA players started paying insane prices… he was in a few bands around town also .. good guy.. before he went South..
