I dont think any other Black Metal band can get on Mayhem's level. These guys have been around since a long time and everything they've done so far has not been beaten. I can really compare black metal (especially Mayhem) with classical music (I love both genres). Both try to make an atmosphere and they mostly do it perfectly. Mayhem really make their music feel dark, they want you to experience what true fear is, which was Euronymous's intention in the 90's. For me black metal is always something which makes you feel like you are not on this world and, wether it would be death, alternative universes, Hell and something mythical. It's undoubtably art.

I have heard few Mayhem songs, because of my beliefs, but i am pretty sure, as a experienced metalhead (i consider that myself, after almost 15 years listening extreme metal) that this is their best song. And maybe this is the definition of black metal, cause this song particularly, has the black metal sign: a very dark ambient, lyrics expressing the deepest feelings of a human, desperation, loneliness, sorrow, death thoughts. The musicianship is on top, agressiveness at it's peak. Brutal drums, fast and accurate guitars charged with anger and hate, structured solos, a brilliant and beautifully loud bass, and the lost-mental-doomed voice of Csihar, paying respect to Dead's memory. An absolute masterpiece i enjoy ocassionally, when i feel bad. It gives me strenght to continue with my long journey to death.

Rie Matsumoto He doesn't use triggers in this video! Only for his bass drums, and almost every metal drummer does that...
