Growing up shredding potatoes and dicing onions with Mom & Daddy was always a favorite childhood memory. We'd sing songs and they'd tell us stories, and we'd talk scripture and history and just whatever we wanted. I can't even count the hours we'd spend every year as a family making our latkes. This was awesome to see cuz it's like sharing this kinda memory-making magic with everyone in the world!

Instead of using paper bags or towels to drain them, I have a splatter screen that I put over the pan during cooking. I take the latkes out of the pan and put them on top of the screen. That lets the oil drain back into the pan and keeps the latke warm.

My daughter asked if we could celebrate the holiday after learning about it at school. We learned about the history and celebrate it every year now so the traditions are very new to us. We missed the event this year so we will recount the Hanukkah story and I will celebrate at home with my children. They look forward to this every year now. I hope this does not offend you but as Christians we believe we serve the same God. I grew up watching your show and loved it. From my family to yours. 💗💗 Alicia

Just for scientific accuracy: Chives are not "baby scallions", they're a different species: Both are of the genus Allium, but Chives are A. schoenoprasum, whereas Scallion refers to several other A. species, like A. cepa (which is also the "regular" onion) or A. fistulosum. And to add some personal experience, my grandma grew both in her garden and chives never turned into scallions when she forgot to pick them ;) p.S. Love you, Mayim. Happy Hanukkah!

Giedre Antul - The reason is that the Jewish people have moved around the world for the better part of two thousand years. And, wherever the Jewish people settle, we pick up recipes and customs of the people we settle near. Latkes (potato pancakes) are popular all around the middle and eastern European area, so of course we're going to adapt it and include it into our traditions. We also snagged Schnitzel from the same area as well. (Although, we use chicken cutlets instead of pork.) With a large amount of Jews living in the US and Canada, doughnuts are becoming a popular food for Chanukah, because they're also fried in oil. Also, the potato wasn't available for thousands of years, seeing it hails from South America. More like the last 500 to 750 years.

chives don't grow up to be scallions, they're the same genus, Allium, but different species. A number of Allium species & cultivars are grown for scallions, and it's fair to say chives are LIKE baby scallions, in that you eat the leafy part and they taste oniony and are green (technical terms), but chives are a distinct species that stays small and grass-looking (technical term) and doesn't grow a big tasty bulb anyway actual neuroscientist Mayim Bialik counting aloud so as not to lose track of six is the most relatable ever and I for one am grateful

@@fzzypurpleturtle Is that cool, or is that cultural appropriation? I've read that some Jews kinda frown upon some churches who do Passover seders, so I wonder how they feel about Christians doing Hannukah. I am Anglican myself and I like the concept behind the mezuzah and I have considered putting a Christian one on my door BUT....if it's disrespectful to Jewish culture, I will not do it.
@fzzypurpleturtle6 жыл бұрын
Kate Ross to get technical-my mom quietly observes it because some Christians believe that Jesus was “conceived” during Hanukkah because that’s the winter solstice and I believe Jesus was actually born in August or September. Also,God states in the Bible that Jews are the chosen people, so some Christians are fiercely protective of them. I’m highly aware of cultural appropriation but I don’t think that’s what she’s doing. I think there's still no better topping than sour cream or applesauce, but I've recently added homemade spinach dip to the choices. Nothing beats using fresh ingredients, but the Maneschevitz mix is a good product for what it is. Keeps a while on the shelf and whips right up when you want a fast treat.

I always eat my latkes with applesauce. Been doing it for 42 years and now I have my teenage children doing it. Love your channel. I live in Georgia and in my town I think there is about a total of 10 Jews. So it's so nice watching your videos.

@Abby Schneider It’s once a year. Also, the other end of our culinary spectrum is matzo, bitter greens and horseradish. I feel like they balance each other out.

Chives are a different thing from green onions- if you keep growing chives they will never turn into green onions ❤️

But how would she make her money if she doesn't shill a product from the company that's paying for her video?
@somethingsmatter5 жыл бұрын
@@bsteven885 You'd think she'd make enough on the Big Bang Theory to not need to make money off KZbin.

I was a chemistry major and I love cooking, so, ditto. I totally vouch for the Manischewitz mix! I made many boxes of it for me and grandma while in college.
