I use burnt umber & raw umber mostly. Occasionally I’ve played with burnt sienna too but I like the two earth tones the best.

Fabulous looking forward to seeing PART 2 if you don't have raw umber what can be mixed to achieve this colour, or can a substitute be used?

You can use burnt umber but sometimes it can make yellows appear green. So you could use raw sienna too. Any of those earth tones.

Is there a particular type or brand of hairspray t use as a fixative

Not really I use a fine mist one. I’d avoid the very cheap ones that might “spit” but it doesn’t have to be super expensive either. I Use very little.

Is the rose dry when you add the background?

No I did both together BUT you could dry it between layers if you were worried about edges blending.
