great video, 2011tacoma, replace OEM gas cap, had code456, smoke test shows smoke coming from around gas cap. any advise. thanks and God Bless

i have a 2013 with p044 My OBD 2 reader doesn't specify more than that I reset the code Play around with the gas cap it looks pretty good.. I reset the code ,,,, after about 45 miles it through a P045 code.. P044 code didnt come back... So I reset everything again drove 250 miles with no codes ,, then it threw a p044 code again .. i'm about to build myself my own smoke machine and check it myself, Or do you think I'm better off just buying a new gas cap from the dealer ? Car has 80,000 miles on it the gas cap looks really good but it could be the vent seal spring part of the gas cap ,,Which you can't see really.. or do you think I should use a more detailed scan tool? My scan tool is part of my aftermarket radio, I can reset and read codes pretty easily, It's got all the gauges on the radio too.. also when I smoke test it when I get to that part I must clamp that off ? Mind you I'm doing everything without a car on a lift Do you think I should just put the back of the car on Jack stands? I only have one set of them .. Supposedly gas caps are supposed to be replaced every 50,000 miles which is Interesting huh... Well anyway I live in a pretty hot climate so rubber deteriorates pretty easy ... i've already replaced every single rubber component on this car suspension and engine ,, I wonder if it's just that gas cap... But yeah anyway it would be nice to have somebody I can communicate with that knows what they're doing even though I sort of understand things, I just never had to deal with the evap system.. I think In my car that purge solenoid is in a bitchy spot behind the ECM on the firewall ... Even though it's the same exact car I believe same motor too... Just a few changes like my car doesn't even have a transmission dipstick which is ridiculous.. Such a pain in the ass to fill tranny fluid if you ever have to.. I'm just hoping it's something simple and not too crazy either way I'm sure I'll be able to fix it just getting a smoke machine that can do it I could buy one off Amazon but I don't think I feel like spending 70 bucks on one.. I could probably make one.. I'll let you know how it goes .. Thanks for the video it helps me know that I need to clamp that off... What's even more fascinating is all cars are covered by a federal warranty up to 80,000 miles my car is exactly 81,000 miles When It threw the code.. They want almost $30 for a gas cap at AutoZone..lol I'm definitely gonna just get it from the dealer it's like 20 bucks online At least I know it's the real deal... I'm not in a huge rush to fix it because I don't have emissions test till December of this year .. But I definitely would like to fix it before may when It gets 100+ outside On a daily basis.. Life is so much simpler with a car lift And like anything with the right tools

Hi, I agree EVAP is not easy specially when you don't have a car lift, Anyway you meant to say P0440 which is EVAP leak, The most common is the fuel cap and you cant check it by looking at it!, there is a special pressure tool that can test the cap, but it is just cheaper to buy a new Fuel cap and since you already over 81k miles it doesn't hurt to just replace the cap and I don't recommend aftermarket just buy OEM from the dealer it is cheap anyway! make sure it is fully closed tied by turning few more turns with clicks sound heard. The following are the most common: 1- check the filler cap neck where the cap O ring sits, Clean it if it is dirty and change it if it looks rusty or uneven surface. 2- visually inspect the filler tube for rust between the gas tank all the way up to the filler cap. 3- Visually Inspect all EVAP hoses specially around the gas tank for loose or crack. 4- Visually inspect Charcoal canister for crack or damage " in most cases you need a smoke test machine" 5-Vent Solenoid may be stuck open at start up and doesn't fully close "usually Open" . of course there are more reasons to this but I gave you the most common! Just be carful when you work with Gasoline, it is flammable and dangerous, it must be handled by professional only. Thanks

I wonder if you didn't pinch the hose (leaving the vent open) would you still be able to see smoke coming out the gas cap. I have a Mazda 3 2013, the vent is very difficult to reach.

It depends how bad is the gas cap, if small leak you may or you may not able to see it because most of the smoke will go out of the vent, when we are not able to reach the vent, we use bi directional scan tool or lower the canister down away from the car body enough to reach the vent hose, Good luck

I hve the same car, i just purcahse it 2 weeks ago. The whole charcoal canister was ripped off ( was ripped off by snow he was stock...) I replace it with a used canister but the codes keep coming back. I smell fuel from the area... If i get a smoke machine and hook it up under the hood where you did, do i need a special scan tool to open and close vents?? or can i just hook it up and be okay?

you can block the vent solenoid hose manually without a scanner this way the smoke will be trapped in and only comes out of area where is crack or loose connections, Good Luck

@@carservicepro got it fixed! it was the little hose that goes from the tank to the filler neck, used regular fuel hose to fix it.
