Few things to finish up on my 2015 CX9, and then I'm done changing the water pump, oil pan gasket, and an array of other things along the way. I haven't started it yet, and no matter what happens, I learned a ton.. I have all the tools I'll ever need and saved about 5k doing it myself. Super grateful!!

Thank you for showing and suggesting all of the replacement seals and gaskets also the sealant. I replaced the spark plugs so I understand how to remove throttle body and intake manifold. There are many steps involved in the process and you described them in great detail. The description and tricks for the removal of the timing cover are priceless, I have watched other videos and the mechanic did not know the tricks and I watched him split that case into two pieces because he was trying to pry it off. My Mazda CX-9 has coolant in the oil at 81,000 miles. The first symptom was no heat was coming out of the heater vents inside, the air was stone cold in February. The car never overheated, or ran out of coolant. I added coolant as soon I found it low, and good inside heat after that. But then 7 days later I found the coolant low again, so I added coolant a second time. It started running rough after that. I took it to a mechanic and he pulled the oil filler cap and saw milkshake-like oil. He said the engine needs to be taken out to fix it, because the water pump is INSIDE the engine. He said Mazda should really do the repair because the job is very time consuming and requires a Mazda expert mechanic. For a Water Pump??#*&#??? I called the Mazda dealers in my area and they SHOCKED me, when they said it will cost anywhere from $7500 to $11,000 to fix it. Mazda in Danvers, MA would not touch the job, saying a replacement engine alone would cost $7500 BEFORE labor costs. The Blue Book value is less than $6500, so it it not worth replacing the engine. Given the probability that the water pump failure happened once, then it could happen again. Putting a used engine in is a big risk, because the engine design is fundamentally flawed. Many 1000s of Mazda customers have had the same problem, so many in fact that at least 2 large class action lawsuits have been litigated so far. Mazda fought it and won, and didn't give any recompense to customers. Mazda's response in 2023 was that they terminated the CX-9 model completely. I am an engineer, quite mechanical and good at fixing most things. I watched the video from start to finish and found the job doable, but I would have to spend a few hundred dollars to get all the parts and tools. With this project, there are too many critical details for me to pay attention to. The author gives several DIRE warnings throughout this video about what NOT to do. Many steps -- if done poorly -- WILL require you to clean up your mistake, basically start over , or you WILL have a screwed up the engine. This repair is a complicated job to fix a fundamentally defective engine design. The video author has MANY years experience with major car repairs. Water pumps regularly wear out in older cars and must be replaced in most older cars over 100,000 miles. So they are an easily replaceable part in most older cars. The fact that the Mazda CX-9 timing chain and water pump are integrated so tightly is just plain wrong!! This engine was not designed for maintainability. The more I read about Mazda, the more committed I am... I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER MAZDA AGAIN !!

i was able to get it fixed and fully functional after a couple months for 3000ish miles, now i'm onto the front suspension. the water pump part was dated 2015 so the oem pump was likely replaced around 100-110k miles as my car is a 2010 with 225k miles at the time of repair. all the suspension parts have been factory dated between 2009/2010 and most of the engine internals (previous repair only changed the water pump and nothing else) this mazda has been rock solid apart from the water pump issue.
