The diag flow chart from Mazda on this one reminds me of those repair procedure descriptions that say, “remove screws, lift out unit. Installing is the opposite of removal.” As if you looked the process up for that level of information. Nice work. I once had a Pontiac no start because of an ABS module. Eerily similar.

Boys and girls, here is a great example of following a diagnostic process, and not just guessing based on a OBDII code. We can all learn something here by this example. And without a known good waveform to compare it to, it is the correct diagnosis or next step in my opinion. And I thought you were an H Town boy like myself. If I ever have a difficult diagnosis I know who I’m calling! Good stuff as always.

Good diag process. Those ABS modules are usually faulty from cheap solder processes. Solder cracks and then hot/cold temperatures affect function. Very difficult to pin down unless a mechanic does what Eric has in this video. You would think the modules would have an LED on them that lights up when the module fails. The DTC's in this case where not a lot of help.

It is possible to supply the abs module with powers and grounds and then probe the can outputs to see if there is a signal. It's even possible to connect a scan tool directly to the can high and low and directly communicate with it. A way to do this is to cut into the can lines at the back of the abs module to disconnect it from the rest of the network and then reconnect the wires afterwards.

I guessed it was the ABS module because my friends Toyota Camry had the same weird symptoms about 6 years ago. I googled her cars symptoms and found that others had the same problem that turned out to be the ABS. The sad part is that the module was not sold separately but part of the very expensive pump. I help her find a used pump on ebay and swapped the module that easily comes off with 4 screws.

Great video as always! I understand everything you say and show, but I still appreciate the explaining you do! Issue in this case is probably a cold solder joint where the connector containing the CAN wires is soldered on the board, probably that's why jt seems to work when it's really hot, solder probably melts a little bit and re-establishes connection. Awesome! Always start your diag with some insight, start your diag at a common sense location, Use the information you have and the test's that you do with your own input will (dont listen to someone looking over your shoulder) lead you to the next test or the fix and to the logical conclusion.
@spelunkerd3 жыл бұрын
Well explained! I notice that in your CAN bus line there is a short repeating signal that has a higher voltage (on both arms) compared to the normal voltage for all the other signals. Your scope trigger was set on that higher voltage signal, at 5:06 of the video, at the right end of the screen. Is that normal?
@Jpilgrim303 жыл бұрын
Yes that is normal and I see that on about every car I’ve ever put a scope on the can bus. It’s called ringing. It’s an effect of inductance and capacitance in the circuit. He has his trigger towards the end of the screen but you’ll notice that little spike almost always occurs at the beginning of a group of signals and is caused by the controller that is transmitting initially driving the circuit high.

İnspection was good but if you had a testing abs module it coud be easier to solve the problem.i'l allways check power lines before replacing the abs module thank ypu.
@RetroCarGuy5303 жыл бұрын
After you removed the wire from the DLC that is for the dedicated communications bus for the SAS/DSC/ABS, the fact that scan tool stated it couldn't communicate with the ABS control module was used as proof the ABS control module was not communicating via the CAN bus. Maybe or maybe not.. You're assuming the scan tool software was written with logic to use both communication paths to the ABS module. Just because the dedicated communications path was removed doesn't necessarily mean the scan tool software is smart enough to figure that out and then to try communicating via the CAN bus instead. It might have that coded into the logic, but I don't believe there's no way to state 100 percent it can or will try using the CAN bus at that point. Your powers and grounds tests finding no faults along with the other modules/devices complaining about the ABS module strongly suggested that it was the ABS module at fault. Congrats on getting this figured out for that shop and the car owner!
@vee9853 жыл бұрын
Eric Nice diag. Just wondering, was there a way just to reprogram the previous module to see if the problem disappears. Maybe a software glitch?
@robbflynn43253 жыл бұрын
All these computers and associated check engine codes on cars are an absolute nightmare when they start playing up as they usually do. I recall driving cars with manual chokes, and automatic transmissions were only usually in the more expensive vehicles, and air conditioning was winding down your window down, manually. Repairing and diagnosing vehicles back then was easy because they were so basic! I guess all the emissions rules and push for better fuel efficiency is the reason we are where we are now.
@joeandgod13 жыл бұрын
Is there any way of telling if a module needs to be replaced or just reprogrammed? Or do you got to just try to reprogram it and if it don't work, replace it.
@stevetaylor24452 жыл бұрын
Can hi and low does not refer to high speed and low speed,it refers to can high being voltage pulled higher from 2 1/2 volts up to 3 1/2 volts and can low being pulled lower from 2 1/2 volts down to 1 1/2 volts. It's is also easy to understand that they operate at the same speed because they mirror each other on the lab scope,if they were different speeds they would not mirror each other. The K line is usually operating at a different speed.
@jum52382 жыл бұрын
From your wiring diagram, I think that everything is basically spliced to one another, so just because you see "traffic" on the ABS CAN module lines, doesn't mean it's coming from the ABS module. You're probably seeing chatter from everything else on the lines. Remember, it's a CAN *BUS*. I agree that it was likely a bad solder joint, with intermittent connection.

I am not electrician nor a mechanic and I understand this canbus error is a pain :) Car manufacturers should supply better tools to diagnose this like supplying the waveform between all modules without hooking pins to the car..
