being the owner of an rx8 since its introduction, (I got mine in Sept, 2003), I agree with Clarksons description about the tyres. The OEMs were Bridgestone Potenzas. great tyres on the track, on a dry, hot August day, with no rain in sight. After both the tyres and tarmac were warmed up to about the level of egg frying - phenomenally sticky. Anything less than that, forget it. I purchased a set of Pirelli P-Zero Neros @ 14k miles and will never buy Potenzas again. Amazing on the track!

Jeremy Clarkson: "Of all of the cars I've driven this year, I'm pretty sure this one, is the best." I took that to mean the best driving car, and I concur. I think it was the best driving car of 2004 as well. That reversal at the end of the show was explained two ways: 1) It wasn't the best car, period; just the best driving car. 2) It's handling was twitchy in the rain, using the tires he turned to slicks on the track. I don't see a contradiction when you consider the devil in the details. I do think the producers made him backtrack for the sake of high end supercar and super donors/advertisers to the show.

RX8s are so simple and reliable, just change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 6 months max. for top performance there are a few mandatory things to do: 1) fit the latest 2kw starter. 2) replace the spark plugs, HT leads and coil packs every 29,000 miles. 3) fit the largest battery that will fit (like from a Ford Transit van at 1000CCA. This engine must spin at 200rpm to start. If you still have a problem with oil consumption and hot start low compression then shake up and add a 400mls can of Ametech Engine Restore oil additive. Problem cured within 300 miles or 5 hours of normal driving. Add an Ametech every 29,000 miles to keep the problem under control.

As a long time owner of an RX8 I have to say that there is very little that can match it in terms of handling. I have owned several muscle cars over the years and although all of them would comfortably beat the RX8 in a straight line, none of them would come close to it on a tight mountain road or racetrack. I have a review of my RX8 on my channel if anyone is interested. Towards the end of my video I talk about oil consumption and how best to prevent excessive wear on the rotary engines Apex seals. For those not familiar with Rotary engines, there are very few moving parts in the engine, the Apex seal that seals the rotor against the engine housing is generally the likely point of failure. Also the OEM coils tend to fail over time and generally it is a good idea to replace them with something more reliable. I have installed the Black Halo Racing kit which has been great thus far. Another consideration is the battery you have installed. The RX8 needs a battery with a high Cold Crank Amps (CCA) rating, from memory mine is rated at 750CCA. I hope this helps any potential RX8 drivers. Gotta say, I can't wait for the RX9 :)

The handling is very impressive! Well, i believe above its class anyway. I may be wrong, but it seems to me like it's the housing and side plates that go bad and stops sealing properly. Why does everyone point at the apex seals?

I have owned a 2004 RX8 6 speed for 8 years. It is one of the best driving car (except in the wet) I have owned. It is always fun to drive and mune has been reliable. I don't drive like a fool so I have 180k on the original motor. There are some naggly things like the clutch pedal plate, the driver's side door latch, the cracked passenger airbag cover and the stupidly designed sun visors. tbh if kept stock and with proper monitoring of the engine condition/necessary changes to oil/additives when needed its actually very reliable/cost effective sports car. Its when ppl mod and are un-educated about how temperamental and IDEAL the fuel air mixture/compression are with rotaries that grows into the "lore" behind their reliability. Anything that needs scaled/properly calculated flow/intake sizing etc piping is going to have INHERENT aspects of reliability/true sportscar diva esque aspects of ownership in the relationship with the car. Not a car/engine/platform for casuals/cheap ppl. Yet if you can find an rx-8 stock from a reliable owner/single owner you got yourself a good deal/good sportscar if kept in that condition Plus theyre holding their value as it is on sites like BAT as far as stock/newer model year rx-8s or ones with rare trim/specs.

Fantastic Cars. Had mine for year and a half now. It's my first car insurance is only 2800 100 extra than my mate who has a Ford Fiesta. Failure of main tense eg oil checks checking plugs coils the cars do break quickly. But mine is great. Put 250ml 2 stroke performance oil with 97 fuel the car feels like it's running off milk. They are very underestimated from all the pub talk. Only downfalls is the MPG and having to wait for it to warm up/can't turn it off cold. MPG is about 26 if you drive it like an old Geaser 12mpg when you beep it none stop but casually I'd get 18mpg. To warm the car you have to wait about 3-4 minutes for the revs to drop under 1250 rpm and wait until the water temp needle moves to the middle to rev it over 4000. But the best bits is the amazing handling, once it's warm you could red line every gear and it does no effect to the engine at all. As rotary enthusiasts say a beep a day keeps the rebuild away. If anyone is looking into getting one, I'd recommend buying one with a compression test 6.7s at least or buy a cheap one £700 and take it to get the engine rebuilt for £2500. And that requires maintenance and costs a lot to run. 04 plates under have reports of having abit more oil consumption. 06 plates and above have £500 road tax a year I think the others have £320 or something like that
@milfhunterX5 жыл бұрын
Actually you CAN shut it off while cold, the secret is in flooring it as you shut the engine off so that the remaining fuel gets burnt to avoid locking. I worked for Mazda back in 08 and this was the routine when moving rotaries out of the way.

Commenting because we own one and want to help current and future owners: - we are at 84k with no major engine issues - the car is fun and raspy if you saw off the exhaust right by the rear diff, lots of burble and pops lol - this car WILL handle the snow and ice, just please monitor your tire tread. esipcally if you have coils and camber, monitor the inside tread - issues with rough idle, storability, sometimes dying at idle? clean your SSV (secondary shutter valve) as they get clogged with buildup (this isn't a definite cure, as other solutions could be replacing the ssv or no cure at all) - the trans gets super hot!! like, so much that 80-90 with spew out of the top to your rubber seals for the shift boot. -in addition to the trans, the white plastic on the shift lever has the capability to melt, so if you are having trouble going into gears check that out. ^ or just don't make it a drift car and you won't have half of those problems! lol OVERALL, it's a super fun car. we have debated selling it many times but it never leaves. happy revving! edit: im also adding that the driveline is carbon fiber!!!!! so be SUPER careful when or if you take it out for maintenance. treat it like a delicate flower that will deteriorate if bumped lol

Totally agree, fantastic Cars and only fault due to customer failure in maintenance. My 06 Evolve has done nearly 60k mostly urban miles and is still running better than any other car I have owned. Get the oil and water pumps checked regular to ensure the engine is running as it should. Drives awesome and surprisingly good on fuel for what it is!

Sammy Dean try 101k kms on mine and runing like new..oil changes at 3k, cheking oil levels at fill ups and 9k rpm from time to time and she loves it...Just make sure you replace the CC, spark plugs and wires if you havent done so...Thats all there is 2 it..
@Fardun0079 жыл бұрын
Sammy Dean People value reliability from a car engine more than how much horsepower is produced from a 1.3 liters engine. Seriously most owners who will have little time and money to spend on maintenance. You have to be very careful with the RX8 - engine flooding is a common problem, very short trips have to be avoided, shutting the car off when cold also causes problems. Ignition coils, spark plugs, solenoid valves, starter motors, battery, oxygen sensors all requires replacement in a shorter time than you can imagine. Spares are all expensive. Cannot run on regular oil, it MUST be unleaded otherwise could lead to engine failures sooner than you can think. How many would be willing to put up with all that ?

This is true! My sister's fiancée has a 2004 RX-8 & it has over 75,000km on it. The only thing he's had a problem, was it doesn't like 82 octane. So it will flood in the winter, ended up having to replace the cat 3 times, replace the coils once & plugs. Other then that, we love that car. Cornering with it is amazing, the engine is mounted behind the front axle & the gas tank is in front of the rear axle. I will buy a rx8 in the future.

I have had my RX8 since 2004. There is known engine failure issues, power steering issues and bad seals in the rear lights, HOWEVER I have serviced mine just as you should, I have checked the oil after every 4 fill ups and made sure it was at the correct level and kept the sensors on the EPS clean and it has never been in the shop for more than a oil change. I only see bad reviews for this car with people who have no clue how an rotary engine works and unknowingly, they do not maintain it.

It's hard to go wrong with a Mazda sports car. I have always loved the RX cars but could never afford one when they were available. I recently bought a Mazdaspeed 3 and I am just blown away by the quality of everything, this coming from a 10 year Toyota owner. Mazda is now my favorite car company. my rx8 done 68000 miles, had a complete once over, compression etc by an independent rotary specialist and he said its absolutely fine. all you need is a basic understanding of these cars their pros and cons, i do 5 litres of oil a year topped up every 3 months, yes a lack of torque but thats what the gears and high revving engine is about, its meant to be and is half the fun! factory fitted tyres bridgestone 040s no good in wet, . i replaced them and handles as good in wet as you could want.

the beauty and the beast, the Mazda RX8.
@aksmit4x11 жыл бұрын
As someone who owns an rx8 I think you misunderstand rotary engines entirely, apex seals are no longer the problem they were back when the rx7 was popular, materials have improved since then providing higher compression 10:1 in the rx8 and with proper maintenance should outlast piston engines hence their use in airplanes due to their exceptional reliability stemming from having only 3 moving parts. I like 350z's myself but I have yet to come across one that handles as well as an rx8.
